Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

December 24, 2016 Morning

A rainy and dark but mild for the start of the Christmas Eve holiday. Around 39 or 40 degrees this morning. Certainly not the 72 degrees of a year ago. The risk of freezing rain around the city has disappeared with the warmer temperatures that stayed with us throughout the night.

For the rest of today look for near constant temperatures around 40 under cloudy skies.   Seven degrees above normal. South wind 8 to 13 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had fog, rain and a high of 72 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 2015. 13 inches of snow fell back in 1966. Unlike 1966, sixty-nine and twenty ought two we probably aren’t going to have a very snowy Christmas but as is common there will be some snow in the Adirondacks.

Cooled offers enough last night that by morning it was pretty chilly in the apartment. But it warmed up quickly as morning approached. Still a very gray and dreary morning with the clouds and rain.

The sun will set at 4:27 pm with dusk around 4:59 pm, which is 38 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daylight, an increase of 16 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 33 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees above normal. Northwest wind around 9 mph. In 2015, it got down to 35 degrees with periods of rain. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1969.

Tomorrow I was thinking about going camping but again it looks like it will be a very cold evening with temperatures hovering around zero in the Adirondacks, so I may wait another week. I’ve tent camped down to about 16 degrees but tomorrow night will be much colder in the Adirondacks. Plus I’m not crazy about getting out everything in the attic for one day at camp. I do want to get back to the Adirondacks but maybe next weekend if it’s not so cold.

Next Saturday is New Years Eve when the sun will be setting at 4:32 pm with dusk at 5:04 pm. On that day in 2015, we had rain and temperatures between 43 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1895.

December 23, 2016 Afternoon

You don’t get many December days as nice as today with mostly clear skies and forty four degrees in temperature.  Sun angle is so weak and sunset so early it’s 3:45 and its already getting close to dark. There is a south-southwest breeze at 6 mph.

The sun will set at 4:26 pm with dusk around 4:58 pm, which is 36 seconds later than yesterday. At sunset, look for mostly clear  conditions and 40 degrees. There will be a south-southwest breeze at 6 mph.

We closed the office down a little early and I’m taking the express bus to the park and ride. I will have to walk home from there as the 3:40 bus doesn’t go past there. But I don’t mind as it’s a nice day for a walk and I skipped my lunchtime walk.

Tonight will have increasing clouds, with a low of 31 degrees at 11pm. 13 degrees above normal. South wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2015, it got down to 43 degrees with periods of fog and rain. The record low of -15 occurred back in 1989.

Waning Crescent Moon tonight with 31% illuminated. The moon will rise around 1:36 am. In the meantime enjoy the December stars because tonight should be a clear evening.

Tomorrow will rain, snow, and sleet before 1pm, then a chance of rain between 1pm and 4pm. High of 40 degrees at 1pm. Seven degrees above normal. South wind 8 to 11 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had fog, rain and a high of 72 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 2015. 13 inches of snow fell back in 1966.

Now that it’s warmed up I finally got my winter coat today in the mail. I ordered it a week and a half ago, and when I waited a week I sent a follow-up email and it was one day shipped the next day. I don’t know what the delay was but Gander Mountain some how screwed up and I’m a bit annoyed with the delay. I guess it’s not the end of the world. I got the coat. It looks nice and hopefully it will fit well. They have free returns if it doesn’t fit.

In four weeks on January 20 the sun will be setting at 4:54 pm, which is 27 minutes later then today. In 2016 on that day, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 30 and 16 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 30 and 14 degrees. The record high of 53 degrees was set back in 2006.

Basically zero traffic on 787 with the holiday but also it’s still fairly early. So the express bus really was express. It will be a nice walk home and I should be home by dusk. A quick dinner then off to the library then the evening to walk. I might start packing for camping although it should be fairly light as I’m only camping one night.

December 23, 2016 morning

Today is an appropriate day to wish people you see on the street an Merry Christmas. Everybody could use a little Christmas cheer in the deep and dark days of late December and the holiday commemorating Christ’s Birthday starts tomorrow. For your Jewish friends, don’t forget to wish them a Happy Hunakkah as their holidays most holy of days concludes tomorrow.

Today is going to be a mild sunny start to your holiday weekend. Currently 38 degrees but with the sun rising shortly we should push up to 42 degrees later. It would be even warmer were not the sun angle so week.

Have a great day and a very Merry Β Christmas to you.

December 22, 2016 nightΒ

There is so much sadness, anger and fear these days watching Charlie Brown’s Christmas Special was so reaffirming. Christmas doesn’t have to be about all this commercialism, we don’t have to hate each other or be always so angry towards those who are different. Granted, I was glad to have taped the show in advance because the commercials were so obnoxious. I may save the edited version sans commercials on my backup drive for whenever I need a quick pick me up.

37 degrees with a fair number of stars tonight. It was a very pleasant evening walk. Skipped the library tonight as I’ve gotten away from the late evening walks. A lot of people out on the streets tonight. More clouds later with a low around 28 degrees. Clearing in the morning then mostly sunny with a high around 41 come Friday afternoon.  The sun will rise at 7:22 am with the first light at 6:50 am, which is 27 seconds later then yesterday.

Definitely looking forward to spending a night in the wilderness this weekend and hopefully a mild January 2017 so I can spend many more nights in the woods.

There are so many people out there struggling this holiday season. People who work so hard but have so little. Proud, honest, hard working folk. I wish I could figure out how I could help or what causes I should give to this holiday season. I try to generous but there are so many people and organizations that are in need. I should do more but so many things are so far away from me in affluent Delmar.

Nobody really knows what 2017 will bring, to a certain extent we are all victims to history. I know some very good people are proud and excited about the election of Trump. Other things he says are downright alarming. I just hope that he does what is right for our country, helps those in need, especially those in Appalachia, the Ozarks, down on the farm and in the rest of Rural America that are struggling so hard to make ends meet while government and the system is doing nothing except holding them back. I wish I knew the answer but I doubt liberalism or conservatism has all the solutions.

Looking ahead, Ground Hog Day is in 6 weeks and Start of June is in 23 weeks.

December 21, 2016 Morning

Well folks, it’s officially winter out there. 21 degrees under clear skies. The breeze is giving us a wind chill is 15. Sun should be rising in a few minutes.

Today will be mostly sunny, with a high of 36 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees above normal. Not a big jump in temperatures today because we have the weakest sun of the year with the sun angle as far south as it goes. West wind 5 to 7 mph.

Not the earliest sunset of the year tonight but close, around 4:25 pm tonight.

The rest of the week will have times of clouds and sun with temperatures around 40 or maybe slightly below. Watch out for some quick snow squalls on Christmas Eve. But other than that it should be a good week, fairly typical for the days leading up to Christmas.

As the bus says that just went by, Merry Christmas. Ten days until New Years Evening.

December 20, 2016 Night

Well by the time you wake up in the morning it will officially be winter. Today was cool but without much of a breeze and adequate clothing it was bearable. Tonight isn’t too bad but with a slight breeze we do have a slight wind chill around 14. Mercury wise we are at 26, which is much warmer than this morning. Times of clouds and stars tonight.

Kaaterskill Falls was quite nice. It was so cold this morning with temperatures in the single digits that I almost stayed home. I didn’t leave for the Catskills until after lunch time and was primarily planning on just taking a drive. I canceled my plans for Overlook Mountain as I was afraid it would be icy and truly frigid up top. I’ve watched many a December sunset up there on many cold nights. On a weekday that mountain tends to be pretty empty.

But with enough layers it was plenty warm for hiking and I almost had the new Kaaterskill Falls overlook and trails to myself. I’m sure on a warm, sunny summer day that area is now packed. The trails and overlook are nice, although I do think the area is getting a bit too over developed for forest preserve. With the rock stairway blasted into the mountains and trails blasted into the side of the falls, seems more like a park then wilderness in the form of forest preserve. I worry that the extensive development will only produce more overuse and more stupid and risky behavior as the falls and they’ll have to reduce public access.

I wish I had gotten an earlier start but I poked around at home, as I wish I could have seen more of the Kaaterskill Rail  Trail. Get some good snow and the trail would be perfect for cross country  skiing. Nice and flat, pretty woods  and not right at the edge of the escarpment so you don’t have to worry about losing control and plunging to your death. Need a decent amount of snow to avoid the ties which stick up in parts of the trail. The falls probably aren’t going away.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, getting down to 22 degrees at 5am. For the last night of the year in Delmar, that’s pretty reasonable. One degree above normal. South wind 6 to 9 mph. In 2015, it got down to 33 degrees with periods of rain. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1942. People complain about the arctic blast lately but it could be a lot colder. Just imagine living in a poorly heated cold water flat in Downtown Albany in 1942 in December with temperatures 18 below…

Last Quarter Moon tonight with 49% illuminated. The moon will rise around 10:51 pm. The New Moon is a week  Wednesday night with mostly cloudy skies expected. No late December star gazing for you. Maybe next week.

After playing hookie today, back to work through Friday. It was a nice to get away for a day. I don’t have any more vacation time remaining before the end of the year. But Monday is a state holiday! I might go camping Christmas Day to Monday based on weather. In the meantime, tomorrow is going to a nice first day of winter.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny, with a high of 36 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph. I would have taken tomorrow off instead of the much colder and clouds today but I have the Save the Pine Bush dinner to go to in the city after work. A year ago, we had rain and a high of 48 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1957. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 2008. The sun will rise at 7:22 am with the first light at 6:50 am, which is 31 seconds later then yesterday. I believe it’s the latest sunset of the year but I’d have to check.

Looking ahead, Inauguration Day is in 2 months, Valentines Day is in 8 weeks, Presidents Day is in 3 months, Spring is in 13 weeks, Average High is 50 is in 14 weeks, Tax Day is in 17 weeks, Average High is 70 is in 21 weeks and Independence Day is in 28 weeks.

December 20, 2016 8 AM Update

The sun will set at 4:25 pm with dusk around 4:57 pm, which is 29 seconds later than yesterday. The sun sets are definitely getting later now. It’s not pitch black when I get out of work.Today will have 9 hours and 2 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 2 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 21 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal. South wind 6 to 9 mph. In 2015, it got down to 33 degrees with periods of rain. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1942.

There isΒ 1 month until Inauguration Day when the sun will be setting at 4:54 pm with dusk at 5:25 pm. The average high temperature is 32 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895.Β Trump will be inaugurated our 45th president on that day.
