September 15, 2019 Morning
Good morning! Happy Sunday. Four weeks to Average High is 60 ๐. Partly sunny and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 54 degrees. Seems like a nice morning. I’m making up some french toast ๐ง and coffee โ now and going to soon take a shower ๐ฟ.
I think the plan for today is to hike Windham High Peak ๐ป and go out to my parents house ๐ฒ for Sunday dinner. ๐ถ I haven’t done Windham High Peak in a number of years and I have think it will be a nice hike, even if last time I was up there I was under impressed by the views. ๐ท
Today will be mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 10th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 11am. West wind 3 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1915.
The sun will set at 7:06 pm with dusk around 7:34 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 30 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will have a slight chance of showers after 1am. Mostly cloudy ๐ง, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 2nd. Maximum dew point of 56 at 10pm. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1964.
The display in my bedroom is still getting stuck and malfunctioning a lot. ๐ I think I’ve found the bad solder joint and the board, I will have to hit it again with the soldering iron. ๐ฌ
Next weekend keeps looking increasingly hot and sunny. ๐ I think it might be good for one more weekend at the potholers after I do the Pine Bush Bird Hike ๐ฆ early on Saturday morning.
Been thinking ๐ญ about hiking back to Pharoah Lake in late October or early November. ๐ถ I made up a revised map ๐พ yesterday and was thinking it would be a nice day hike. The hike back there is an easy 3 1/2 miles each way over virtually flat terrain (you gain only 200 ft in elevation from Beaver Brook Road) but the 420 acre lake ๐ is 5 miles around it so it’s a good distance. Do it in November and all your bound to see is a few deer hunters, ๐ฆ the crowds ๐ช will be long gone.
I haven’t talked or given a whole lot of thought towards saving for my off grid house ๐ก lately. The automatic investments are doing their thing and I’m getting closer one step at a time. Yeah, a lot of people I went to school with or know are buying houses out in the country ๐ฎ but I just can’t see doing that while I still live in New York. I’m fine spending a lot of weekends for now in the wilderness, camping, cooking and having fires. ๐ฅ
Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Average High is 60 ๐ when the sun will be setting at 6:17 pm with dusk at 6:45 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 55 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 61 degrees. We hit a record high of 81 back in 1930.
September 7, 2019 Afternoon
Good afternoon! Mostly sunny and 66 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐. The dew point is 46 degrees. A pretty nice day, although I decided to stay in town this weekend. Instead, I spent my morning doing trail work at the Holt Preserve in Feura Bush and other things that needed to get done.
I’ve been trying to do more volunteer work these days ๐ฒ๐ณand be more involved with my community. I like doing trail work, it’s much different from what I do weekdays at work. I still also remain quiet involved with Save the Pine Bush, especially coordinating an leading the hikes, ๐ถ research ๐ and helping out with the dinners. ๐
Also got a lot of other things done that were necessary โ …. I got my hair cut ๐so I’ll look nice for the work presentation I’m doing this week in New York, took the paper recyclables โป to the paper ๐ dumpster at the Park and River. The paper garbage can was getting a little full at home and I don’t like to burn that much paper at camp as it’s kind of hard to burn ๐ฅ. Paper doesn’t burn as easy as you would think, especially the glossy papers.
This afternoon will be mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 71 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 18th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 6pm. Northwest wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 77 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1945.
After the trail work day ๐ท at Holt Preserve I collapsed in bed. ๐ด I was exhausted. I slept awful last night because I had a cup of strong coffee โa my coffee often is after work to have enough energy to do my evening walk. While I fell asleep early, I didn’t sleep well with some pretty crazy nightmares. ๐ญ
Later this afternoon I’m going to go and walk out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐ธ. I always like the walk ๐ถ out there and it’s nice to have the bathrooms ๐ฝ out there to take a piss when I get there. Worse part of hiking in the city. I like being able to pee wherever I want in the wilderness.
The sun will set at 7:19 pm with dusk around 7:47 pm, which is one minute and 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ and temperatures around 65 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 51 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over yesterday.
I can’t dilly daly too long a Five Rivers ๐ฒ๐ณas the sun is setting increasingly early. ๐ I plan to go shopping later this evening. ๐๐ฒ๐๐ Definitely kind of low on food but I have $3 off coupon at ShopRite.
Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ค, with a low of 54 degrees at 4am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 9th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 7pm. West wind around 6 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1978.
As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High 70 ๐ when the sun will be setting at 6:54 pm with dusk at 7:22 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 71 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1895.
September 5, 2019 Morning
Good morning! Happy Beautiful Fall Thursday. The skies are blue, the sun is shining, it’s comfortable, not only too cool or hot. Nice walk down to the bus. ๐ Wore my Carhartt vest for the first time this year. Next Thursday is 6:30 Sunrise ๐. Mornings are a bit dark now although surpringly I awoke pretty early, made eggs for breakfast ๐ณ and pasta for lunch ๐ฒ. Mostly sunny and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. โโโโ Even though there is only one sun, I’ll give it four this morning. Calm wind. The dew point is 51 degrees.
Today will be sunny ๐, with a high of 73 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 13th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 8am. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was very sticky. The high last year was 92 degrees. The record high was set last year.
The sun will set at 7:22 pm with dusk around 7:51 pm, which is one minute and 44 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ and temperatures around 65 degrees. The dew point will be 48 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 12 hours and 57 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be mostly clear ๐, with a low of 50 degrees at 4am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 19th. Calm wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was very sticky. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1938.
Last night I went for my evening walk early — before sunset ๐ถ and it was quite pleasant. I’ve gotten out of the habit of the evening walk, and I didn’t want to risk getting busy with the work project I was doing last night, and then miss my walk. That was a good thing, because I ended up working on that project until almost 11 PM.๐ป
A picture perfect autumn weekend on tap. ๐ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 70. North wind around 7 mph. Maximum dew point of 55 at 5pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 55 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees.
I think Saturday I will stay in town, but Sunday go out hiking. ๐ถย I have a lot of things to do around home on Saturday including get my hair cut, but maybe I’ll hike out to Five Rivers in the afternoon. ๐ธ Sunday I may go hiking in the Catskills, or maybe hunting/fishing at Partridge Run. ๐ฃ๐ฟ๏ธ I really enjoyed hiking Hunter Mountain the other day, so I’m thinking another hike would be nice.โฐ
I was thinking last night that it’s been 18 years since the September 11th terrorist attacks. ๐ข A child born shortly after September 11th ๐ถ can now vote in the election this year. โ I was a freshman in college, 18 years old when the attacks hit. That’s half a lifetime ago now for me. It makes the eighteen years between birth ๐ and high school graduation ๐ seem so inconsequential. Assuming I “retire” young to have my off grid cabin and hobby farm ๐ฎ๐ท๐ค, in another 18 years I’ll likely be close to retirement.
One month until my October Road Trip to West Virginia. ๐ย The first day I will drive down to Towanda Penna, then down to West Virginia via Interstate 99 on that Sunday. ๐ I’m hoping for real nice weather, and this being a week earlier then last year, hopefully the leaves will be close to peak in higher elevations, such as off of Spruce Mountain and Canaan Heights.
As previously noted, next Thursday is 6:30 Sunrise ๐ when the sun will be setting at 7:10 pm with dusk at 7:38 pm. On that day in 2018, we had humid, partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 74 and 66 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 74 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1947.
September 4, 2019 Morning
Good morning! Happy Back to School Day ๐! It’s a Hump Day although so far traffic hasn’t been too bad. Taking the express in today. ๐ Wednesday is September 11th ๐ธ. Hard to believe 18 years has passed since then. A child born after September 11th can vote this year. โ I was 18 when the attacks happened, I’m twice that now.
Mostly cloudy and 66 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ There is a south breeze at 13 mph. ๐ wit. There is a touch of humidity with the dew point around 60 degrees. The skies will clear around 4 pm. Not a terrible walk but brisk because I was a little bit late.๐ถ
Today will have showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 1pm and 4pm. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. Mostly cloudy โ , with a high of 79 degrees at 1pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 27th. Maximum dew point of 65 at 3pm. Southwest wind 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1929.
The sun will set at 7:24 pm with dusk around 7:53 pm, which is one minute and 43 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ At sunset, look for rain ๐ง and temperatures around 72 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 13 hours of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be scattered showers and thunderstorms before 7pm, then isolated showers between 7pm and 8pm. Patchy fog after 5am. Otherwise, partly cloudy , with a low of 54 degrees at 5am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 9th. Maximum dew point of 59 at 6pm. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph becoming light after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 65 degrees. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1974.
Yesterday was a busy day as expected ๐ผ but what got needed to be done got done. I ended up going to the library for a while last night to work on a work project that I had fallen behind schedule somewhat.๐ I was going to work on the blog and some other stuff down there, but the work stuff consumed all my time, and then it was time to go home. Then I ended up going home, and just watching a video I downloaded on my laptop.๐ผ I also put away my camping gear. I misplaced my Bluetooth adapter — I think it’s in my truck but it was getting dark and I couldn’t find it last night.
Still looks like this weekend will be sunny but cool. ๐ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Maximum dew point of 55 at 7pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 71. Maximum dew point of 55 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees.
This weekend I am thinking I’ll get a hair cut, ๐and maybe then on Sunday go hiking ๐ถ before I go out to my parents house, maybe down in the Catskills. Or maybe I’ll head up to Partridge Run and do some hunting, hiking, and fishing. Not totally sure. ๐ญย I don’t want to plan a big adventure to save money, and also because I have a lot of things I need to do around the house, including getting the Save the Pine Bush Map Pyramid Properties Map printed at a print shop before next week. Next Tuesday I’ll be down in New York City, so that will take up most of my day in the evening. The hearing is Wednesday.
Two weeks from Saturday is the Pine Bush Bird Watching Hike ๐ฆ๐ so I will probably stay in town that weekend, and then there is only one more weekend in September — and the first week of October I’m leaving for West Virginia. ๐ So who knows how many more times I’ll get out this month. I do think I want to do a fall trip up to Piseco-Powley Road, although sometimes those campsites get snapped up quickly during hunting season. ๐ฟ๏ธ That said, my West Virginia trip is early enough in October this year so I might be able to do a late October trip.๐
I’ve been continuing to research the various Python and Javascript libraries available for interacting with Renology Rover MPPT controller.ย ๐ณ I am increasingly thinking that’s what I will get around Christmas this year, when sales are available, and I want to hook up the Raspberry Pi to use it to broadcast battery status information to my phone using Bluetooth, and then also read data from the starting battery, and dumping excess current into the starting battery to keep it topped up. Using a Raspberry Pi and the MPPT controller could minimize the amount of wires and components I need to build my smart relay, reducing the chance of failure.๐ป
Today in 1970, Salvador Allende is elected President of Chile. ๐จ๐ฑ Only three years later on September 11th, he would be assassinated with the help of the United States by one of the most notorious tyrants Augusto Pinochet. โ The Price is Right went on CBS for the first time in 1972, and over the past five decades hasn’t changed much.๐ค I used to like watching it on my grandfather’s TV some 30 years ago.๐บ
Also, in 1949 The Peekskill riots were anti-communist race riots directed against African Americans and Jews attending a civil rights benefit concert. ๐ท The catalyst for the rioting was an announced concert by black singer Paul Robeson, who was well known for his strong pro-trade union stance, civil rights activism, communist affiliations, and anti-colonialism.โ The concert, organized as a benefit for the Civil Rights Congress, was scheduled to take place on August 27 in Lakeland Acres.
As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 7 PM Sunset ๐ when the sun will be setting at 6:59 pm with dusk at 7:27 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain and temperatures between 84 and 68 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 71 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1891.
August 25, 2019 Morning
Good morning! Happy Sunday. Next Sunday is the Last Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐. Overcast and 55 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ Calm wind. The dew point is 55 degrees. The skies will clear around 9 am. ๐
Five Rivers was nice yesterday ๐ธ although with less wildlife out and about compared to the spring. There was a lot of people out there too although not so much where I was hiking.
Today will have patchy fog ๐ and clouds before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 8th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 8am. Light and variable wind becoming northeast 5 to 7 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1947.
This morning I’m working on various small improvements to the blog ๐ป and then I’ll probably go out hiking before heading out to the folks for the night. ๐ I’m dog sitting ๐ถ while they’re on vacation. Definitely a nice day.
The sun will set at 7:41 pm with dusk around 8:10 pm, which is one minute and 37 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ Those days of the 8:37 pm sunset are long gone. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 52 degrees. There will be a east breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 24 minutes of day, an decrease of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be mostly clear ๐, with a low of 50 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 19th. East wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1942.
On this day in 1950, President Harry Truman orders the U.S. Army to seize control of the nation’s railroads to avert a strike. ๐๐So much for the boy from Missouri being a socialist, even if he was a really bad driver. ๐
As previously noted, next Sunday is Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ when the sun will be setting at 7:29 pm with dusk at 7:58 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 79 and 66 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1953.
August 22, 2019 Morning
Good morning! Happy Thursday. Six weeks to Last Sunset After 7 PM ๐. Fog and 71 degrees at the Elm Avenue Park and Ride. ๐ซย There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐. The dew point is 66 degrees.ย Once the fog burns off, the skies should clear and it should be a pretty nice afternoon evening. Not a bad walk down to the Park and Ride, ๐ another big commercial inspection there today. It’s the only way commercial vehicles can get from Albany points South and West due to road restrictions and low bridges, so that’s why it’s so popular with the commercial vehicles.๐ฎ
Tonight at 7 PM I am leading the Save the Pine Bush Hike. ๐ฒ It’s going to be a night hike, but should be a pretty good one with clouds burn off an the humidity drops down. We will meet up at the Discovery Center and then hike for about two hours — until well after dark, and then do Blueberry Hill Dune to enjoy the stars after dark.๐ The reason for meeting at the Discovery Center is that the parking lot there is lit all night, which makes it safer to get back to the vehicles after dark.
Later on today, partly sunny ๐ค, with a high of 85 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 10am, then dropping through the afternoon. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1916.
The sun will set at 7:45 pm with dusk around 8:15 pm, which is one minute and 35 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ค and temperatures around 79 degrees. The dew point will be 62 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will have a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy ๐ง, with a low of 59 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Maximum dew point of 62 at 6pm. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1988.
Last night was the Save the Pine Bush Dinnerย featuring Professor Lou Ismay, which you can listen to the SPB Podcasts Page.ย Good lasagna and interesting lecture. I avoided drinking caffeinated coffee this time, โ but I sure was tired by the time I got home.๐ฎ I thought about getting milk when I got home, but I waited until this morning to walk over to Stewart’s and buy milk. It turned out I had enough milk at home from the past weekend, and it wasn’t spoiled, so I finished up this morning, and will have more of my favorite cow beverage for tonight.
Today in 1971, twenty of the Camden 28 were arrested. They were a group of “Catholic left” anti-Vietnam War activists who in 1971 planned and executed a raid on a Camden, New Jersey draft board. โThe raid resulted in a high-profile criminal trial of the activists that was seen by many as a referendum on the Vietnam War and as an example of successful use of jury nullification.โ
Should be a nice final weekend of summer — cool but sunny. ๐ Saturday, sunny, with a high near 77. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Maximum dew point of 57 at 8pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Maximum dew point of 58 at 12pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees. Next weekend is Labor Day Weekend, the closing day for most of the state park pools, with many beaches already done for the summer.๐ Fortunately the Potholers don’t close until it gets too cold, so I might get one more trip up there this autumn.
One month ๐ from now will be Autumn ๐ when the sun will be setting at 6:52 pm with dusk at 7:20 pm. The average high temperature is 70 degrees, with a record high of 95 in 1897.
