Elm Ave Park and Ride

March 5, 2023 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 33 degrees for the evening walk in Delmar. πŸŒƒ There is a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. πŸƒ. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Temperatures will drop below freezing around midnight. β˜ƒοΈ

The snow storm 🌨 that was yesterday is pretty much just as memory as the snow melts away. At least in the city, I bet it will be gone tomorrow. Just the mud left. Maybe we will get more rain or snow later in the week but I don’t think it will last. I think we are passed that based on the statistics but I know there are always outliers.

The dire emergency snowstorm really wasn’t a big deal 🌲though some tree branches came down though I don’t think many people lost power πŸ”Œ but what do I know, I don’t really listen to the radio πŸ“» much for the news πŸ“°. That said, I’ve been updating my music 🎢 collection and now I’ve moved on to the seventies with getting a John Prine record πŸ’Ώ to add to my collection. Much more up to date than the Weavers.

Spent a lot of my weekend studying machine learning πŸ€– and statistics and calculating. For too long I’ve struggled to fully understand Kriging in R but it finally clicked today. πŸ–₯ Kriging is a method of predicting data on a map from known points.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 29 degrees at 4am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 24th. Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph. In 2022, we had light snow in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 14 degrees. The record low of -21 occurred back in 1948.

Earlier this evening I washed off Big Red 🧽 πŸ›» and went to Walmart and got food and supplies. 🍏 I went there after visiting my folks out in Westerlo for lunch, and heading out there, US 9W was closed, and was detoured through Selkirk. So I ended up sitting down by the river in my truck for about a half hour at the Henry Hudson Park. 🐦 I haven’t been there in a long time, I used to go fishing down there 🎣 but with higher gas prices and everything else, not so much these days.

Tonight will have a Full 🌝 Moon with 97% illuminated. At 8 PM, the moon was in the east-southeast (108°) at an altitude of 42° from the horizon, some 251,136 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. πŸš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by September 12th. Another Thursday evening πŸŒƒ has come. Tomorrow will be Friday and I guess there is another snow storm coming for Saturday. I’m tired of winter but my hope is this will be the final last big blast. Or maybe not. It could be a bust depending on the model you consider. 🌨

Tonight will have 12 hours and 38 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over last night.

Earlier today I did my net worth calculation πŸ’΅ and I am finally above water again as I’ve saved some more money and the markets have partially rebounded. πŸ“Š That said, I’m looking at the market fundamentals and corporate profits and the inability of the fed to slow inflation much, I think it might be a another bad year in the market. But I guess I’m acquiring assets for less now that will grow.

Tomorrow will have increasing clouds β˜€ πŸ‘‰ ☁, with a high of 40 degrees at 4pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 1st. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm. While I’ll probably be working late on March 30th πŸ—“ I am thinking by then I’ll be able many nights be able to walk down to the park 🏞 and read after work. πŸ“– Figure by then even at quarter to eight 8⃣ there will be some daylight.

Hedge Row

February 27, 2023 Night

Good evening! Clouds but no snow yet and 33 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. ❄ There is a southeast breeze at 10 mph. πŸƒ. There is an inch of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️The skies will clear tomorrow around 7 pm after the snow ends.

My thought πŸ’ tonight is the best laid plans don’t always work out. I was so excited that the DVD πŸ“€ drive enclosure arrived in the mail βœ‰ today but when I opened it up I discovered it was for the wrong type of drive. It was only $11.50 and I can probably use the case for something else I guess.

I was so hoping to get the voter file πŸ—³ open that the State Board sent me on a DVD πŸ“€ – I actually got the DVD to play on the drive installed on my computer but alas like on the work computer had previously confirmed they sent me a DVD that wasn’t properly written. I also discovered that the built in DVD drive drawer on my computer is broken but I did figure out a way to load disks by manually opening the drive and installing it after disabling the other partition in fstab.

I’m not going to go back to the board for the file. πŸ“‚ It just didn’t work out but I guess I probably wouldn’t have discovered much using machine learning to better understand voting patterns. I don’t know enough about machine learning and my computer isn’t that powerful and 318 EDs really isn’t enough to train things well especially if the districts are so blue in much of the county. Statewide data would be better but that a lot of processing.

I am going to still continue to learn about machine learning πŸ€– aa I have a few books πŸ“š out of the library and I am going through the Stat Quest video series on YouTube. I’m sure there are many other ways I can use machine learning in statistics and map making. Plus it’s safer, no risk of running into trouble with work or building something with the voter file that isn’t allowed.

Tonight will snow, mainly after 10pm. The snow could be heavy at times. 🌨 Low of 26 degrees at 4am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 15th. Southeast wind 10 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is l100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1950.

It’s going to snow, it’s winter. β˜ƒ Probably not good for the morning walk 🚢 but I’ll get up at my normal time and do my best to keep moving. If it’s bad out I won’t do it but I’ll at least catch an earlier bus 🚍 in so I’m in bright and early. I’ve had a 40 day run of 10,000 plus steps or 5 plus miles a day but if the weather interrupts my progress it will be but for a day or two.

Tonight will have a First Quarter πŸŒ“ Moon with 56% illuminated. At 8 PM, the moon was in the southwest (236Β°) at an altitude of 65Β° from the horizon, some 246,871 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. πŸš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by September 3rd. The darkest hour is at 12:09 am, followed by dawn at 6:07 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:36 am in the east (101Β°) and last for 2 minutes and 57 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 35 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:14 am with sun in the east-southeast (107Β°). In four weeks on March 27 the sun will be setting in the west (275Β°) at 7:16 pm (Daylight Savings Time),πŸŒ„ which is one hour, 33 minutes and 10 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 54 and 38 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 50 and 30 degrees. The record high of 78 degrees was set back in 1998. Days like that will be so nice but first through the snow storm.

Looking Up

February 24, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Partly cloudy and 31 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. β›… Breezy, ️22 mph breeze from the northwest 🌬 with gusts up to 32 mph πŸ’¨πŸ’¨πŸ’¨. The current wind chill is 18. There are 3 inches of ice and snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at Sunday around vyv v vga11 am. 🌑️

Once again I chickened πŸ₯ out and decided to go in early and walk the Concourse with the muzzle on. 😷 I did walk down to the Park and Ride and am trying to walk faster so hopefully I can avoid walking outside in the evening. It actually wasn’t too bad down to the Park and but when I first got up boy oh boy πŸ§’ was that wind roaring. Ideally I would have my steps before the end of the work day so I can do them inside but I don’t know if that’s possible. πŸ‘£ I’m thinking of walking down to the library πŸ“š in the evening if necessary to complete today’s walk program.

Today will be partly sunny, with a temperature falling to around 21 by 5pm. β˜€ πŸ’¨ Blustery, with a northwest wind 18 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 74 was set in 2017. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1962. ❄

Amazing how fast the fruits 🍏 🍊🍌 have disappeared from my office 🏒. Same thing with the frozen ones at home. I don’t know if I’ve actually lost any weight, my scale at home is broke but I feel a lot more full and eat less at dinner which saves money πŸ’΅ and feel less light headed at times.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 37.9Β° from the due south horizon (-33Β° vs. 6/21). The golden hour πŸ… starts at 5:00 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (251Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (258Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:39 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 58 seconds with dusk around 6:06 pm, which is one minute and 15 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter πŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (233Β°) at an altitude of 50Β° from the horizon, 238,269 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:40 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 21 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 7. β˜ƒοΈ Breezy, 17 mph breeze β›… from the northwest. Today will have 11 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over yesterday.

Exploring the Concourse 🏒 I’ve discovered new places to walk 🚢 like the South Swan Tunnel which has an interesting set of photographs πŸ–Ό of the Empire State Plaza construction 🚧 and other colorful locations in New York State. I’ve also done the Well of the LOB, Capitol Building and under the Egg. I should think about the forth and fifth floor of the Capitol, if memory serves me right there is an interesting mix of tunnels, stairs and walkways up there. Rainy but mild days I could do the walkway to the Knickerbocker Arena.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a low of 5 degrees at 4am. 15 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -4 at 5am; North wind 7 to 16 mph. The record high of 70 was set in 2017. 16.8 inches of snow fell back in 1966.❄

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until St. Patrick’s Day πŸ€ when the sun will be setting at 7:05 pm with dusk at 7:31 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2022, we had cloudy and temperatures between 45 and 28 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1990.

February 23, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Freezing rain and Ice pellets and 27 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. 🌨 Kind of a mix of slop. There is a north-northeast breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at around 1 pm. 🌑️

I decided to skip my morning walk 🚢 in favor of an earlier bus 🚍 downtown and walking the concourse. It’s not expected to last all day but maybe more rain later. β˜” I will try to do as many steps inside as possible. πŸ‘£

Today will be freezing rain and sleet likely before 1pm, then a slight chance of rain, freezing rain, and sleet between 1pm and 2pm, then a slight chance of rain and sleet after 2pm. Cloudy β˜” , with a high of 34 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 8th. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total daytime ice accumulation of less than a 0. 1 of an inch possible. Total daytime sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 69 was set in 2017. 6.9 inches of snow fell back in 1935.❄

I brought the DVD πŸ“€ into work that I got from the NYS BOE with the county voter file, πŸ“‚ and the work computer couldn’t read it. I tried pulling the second hard drive on my laptop and putting the DVD drive in it but that didn’t work with either. I’m frustrated as I had great hope to use that data to build turn out models and help local candidates get the voters out they need to succeed using R Studio and machine learning.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 37.5Β° from the due south horizon (-33.3Β° vs. 6/21). At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 33 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain or freezing rain, becoming all rain after 10pm, then gradually ending. 🌧 Low of 31 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 18th. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1894.

My thought is that if I walk 🚢 early this evening and at lunch I’ll get my steps in but I’m concerned. I’ve been on a roll πŸ₯ lately and I don’t want to break it.

Cloudy and cold for the weekend. 😞 Saturday, a chance of snow showers after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 25. North wind 5 to 7 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon. The new and improved 519 🚍

I walked down to the Park and Ride today and caught the express from there. I was the only one on the bus today, and I felt guilty for walking and let the bus run empty but one person isn’t going to change much of anything on whether or not the Voorheesville bus has a future, especially the later run.

It’s just tough to rebuild service after the pandemic. Some people close to retirement just hung up their hats after the bus shut down at end of March 2020 and many people now are hybrid workers, working from home a few day a week. I wish that was an option I’d take advantage.

Plus if you take the later express and miss it for some reason, you are screwed and have to call somebody for a ride. Plus getting home at six o’clock or even later kind of sucks so people who have an option don’t do 9-5 but earlier.

At least after a few days of rough starts due to drivers making wrong turns and the closed ramp on 787, things are more on time and moving smoother. It will be interesting to see if bus traffic picks up the meantime or if the extended route will be on the cutting block.
