Daily Update – May 20, 2022
Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday!
Made it almost to the weekend, but it’s going to be a hot one. π Mostly cloudy and 59 degrees to start out the day, but come later looking at peaks of sunshine with a high of around 84 degrees. Not bad when the climate normal for this time of year is 73 degrees.
But the real story of the heat comes tomorrow just in time for the Lupine Festival π¦ where it might reach 94 degrees or even higher π‘shattering the record, as what looks like to be start of a very hot summer, or maybe not depending on who you ask. Back to reality come Monday though, with temperatures only in the 70s to start the work week.
Yesterday, I brought a book down to the park π and read for a while before going for a nature walk. It was surprising cool evening, but this evening should be much more warmer. I have to go over to Lynne’s house and get the supplies for the lupine festival, and then go to the grocery store π as I keep putting this off. But it is going to be a hot evening, so I figure get out and enjoy the air conditioning in my truck.
Many 2020 Census Details Will Be Delayed Until 2023 – The New York Times
WASHINGTON — Two and a half years after the 2020 census stopped counting heads, the Census Bureau has yet to say how many children under age 5 live in Albuquerque, or how many women are in Sioux City. And it will remain that way for another year.
The bureau said this week that it would not be able to publish those statistics and many others until May 2023, and that much of the more granular data, combining answers to several questions, must wait until at least August 2023. The cause, it said, is a series of delays that began with the emergence of Covid-19 and continues with tortuous efforts to keep information on individual respondents private, as federal law requires.
It is the longest delay of census data in memory — as much as two years past a normal release date — and it is causing consternation among some who rely on those numbers to plan for the future.

Daily Update – May 19, 2022
Good morning! Happy Thursday. π§οΈ
Finally back to taking the express bus now that it’s not a session day. It’s running 20 minutes late but I’ve been walking laps in the parking lot and still will have more time to do laps on the Plaza.
Rain showers and 52 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. β There is a southeast breeze at 7 mph. π. The dew point is 49 degrees. The skies will clear around 5 pm.
It seems like the heaviest rain is done and things will be clearing later today. π€οΈ Then hot for Friday and especially Saturday which will likely be record smashing, possibly the hottest day in years. Going to bring a lot of water π¦ for the Lupine Festival π². Probably won’t be good for turn out though.
I often find myself frustrated π€ about all the things I can’t control in this world
I often find myself frustrated π€ about all the things I can’t control in this world
But in many ways I realize that I am blessed. I have a lot to look forward to, step by step I’m closing in on my goals. I live the life that live today, mostly by my own choice. I could do other things but I’m out there chasing the mighty buck, saving and investing for a better tomorrow.
While there is a lot happening locally that I do not agree with, I don’t have to stay forever, I don’t own land or a lot of material things I’d have to haul away. Truth be told, a lot of my stuff is old and worn and probably not worth much to me at all.
There are those out there that want to take a stand, be heard, post their thoughts all over social media, attend protests, write the newspaper editor and run for office. They will attend every community service day, town meeting and public hearing. But that ain’t me.
It’s not that I don’t feel the emotional gut reaction seeing what is happening. It’s not that I don’t have my own views on it all. But I don’t post about it on social media and if I say anything at all its on my blog where I have complete control of the context and any comments posted.
I do have a lot of reason for hope. I am well aware that there are many other communities out there with people who share my values. Places where conservation and morality have more meaning, where people live off and close to the land rather than consuming eco friendly styrofoam to fill their recycling bin while bragging about reducing their carbon footprint.
Really my focus now is work and making and saving money. While I’m always broke and the markets are down, it’s by my own choice. I’m pulling the long hours, making good money at work. By the standards of where I come from, really good money which I’m investing. Inflation is tough though – what was good ten years ago isn’t nearly as much today. But by consuming less, I’m saving more for tomorrow when I can own my own land in a freerer state.
At the same time I’m continuing to learn and educate myself. Getting nimble with R, Census Bureau data and other government data along with GIS and mapping is such a big part of my life these days. I think it’s a valuable skill, something I can use long into the future beyond my career today and my life here in New York State. I’m learning so much and I can see many ways I can put this into use in the future.
