If you can read this message, it’s sign you made it to the new year. Dreary start to the New Year, I heard the rain pouring last night for a while. Now it’s stopped, but for how long?
Cloudy, damp and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. βοΈ But it’s saving on the heat. There is a south breeze at 8 mph. π. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 6 pm. βοΈ
Evidently I decided to stay in town for this New Years Eve. π I was in bed by 8 PM, although I ended up waking up in time for them to play Auld Lang Syne and wish everybody a Happy New Years on North Country Public Radio. Last year was a lot more fun camping on the East Branch of Sacandaga River, but I guess not every winter’s night can be perfect. That said, a week ago I was out in Madison County, and it was pretty nice although cold.
Had a nice cheese π§ fondue with the folks yesterday. π² Kind of nice with things more back to normal with everybody vaccinated and boosted.
I might walk out to Five Rivers, π¦ but I am just not sure how long it will be before rain starts again, although for now it’s staying to the south.
There are a lot of complaints been leveled against 2021, although people aren’t calling it the worse year ever, a moniker seemingly reserved for 2020. But we still have COVID, which so many people, especially the President-elect was hopeful could go away after the first shot, but stayed around persistently for the full year. But alas a rainy, but not so cold 3-day weekend is ahead of us. β I guess it could be blowing snow and cold, but I’m sure such weather will come January, although Monday should be cold enough with wind chills expected to reach down into the single digits, but the mercury not nearly so low. I probably will need to turn up the heat a bit for then. But sunny for Monday! π
With January coming on Saturday, π we are picking up a noticeable amount of sun each day, which will be quite nice. But maybe cold? But alas, we are only two months until March and three from April, so we might have some cold periods but it can’t last that long, especially come March. I am looking forward to spring, with the longer days and not so much snow and icy to deal with — although so far none of that has come yet.

I would say, certainly not the nicest weather ever to end out the year. All of the long weekend looks kind of crappy unfortunately though.

I had hoped to get out of town to go camping this weekend, π you know light some fireworks off, bake some cookies on the fire, have some egg nog, stay up until midnight, and then hot tent, but with rain expected tonight, and it already drizzling, I decided to stay in town. π₯ Truth be told, after the long cold four days I spent out in Madison County earlier in the week, I was hardly excited about heading back out to Central NY.
Later today, I am going out the folks house for a New Years Tradition π₯ — Cheese Fondue. They’ve been doing for decades, and while all that cheese kind of makes my stomach a big achy, it’s still kind of a fun tradition that’s been going on for decades. Now with everybody vaccinated and boosted we can do it again.
It’s been a pretty good year. π It certainly has it’s ups and downs, but in the end things worked out fairly well. I managed to max out my retirement, I got that shinny corner office with the brass lamp, making a good salary, although it still seems like the money is gone πΈ two days after it comes in with inflation and savings. After months of dealing with tires and repairs to the truck, I got it back on the road, and then took a third week to spend some time in Madison County. π Got down to Pennsylvania and West Virigina, got a tube for floating in rivers β« spent a lot of weekends up in the woods and even had clams and lots of beer that one summer long weekend πΉwhat now seems so long ago in the summer.
Saves on the heating bills though I sure like seeing the sun from time to time. That said it looks like January is trending cold and that should bring many clear days. Who knows at this point though if I will be working downtown or things will go remote again with the COVID.

Sidewalks are a bit icy this morning β and there was a bit of drizzle when I left home but it seems like it’s clearing out a bit.
Getting a free ride to work today π as the fare box on the bus is broken. Annoying how the fare box keeps beeping. π Taking the earlier express in, I’ll probably walk the Plaza for a while before work so I can get my steps in.
Still been trying to do 10,000 steps a day, πΆ which is roughly 5 miles. Last week I crossed 100 days with my step counter and a day later I reached 500 miles walking since mid September. It’s tough though with the dark and cold evening – I walked yesterday evening but rarely do after I walk home from the express in the evening. π΄
In some ways I went to spend the night in wilderness to celebrate off the New Year π
But the forecast kind of sucks for the weekend. New Years Eve might be okay, although it looks like freezing rain by morning, and I don’t want to take down an ice-encrusted tent after camping. That said, it’s been fun the past two year I’ve spent in the wilderness — although this year I only just got back from the woods.
