Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.
A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.
In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.
Good afternoon! Mostly sunny and 66 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐. The dew point is 46 degrees. A pretty nice day, although I decided to stay in town this weekend. Instead, I spent my morning doing trail work at the Holt Preserve in Feura Bush and other things that needed to get done.
I’ve been trying to do more volunteer work these days ๐ฒ๐ณand be more involved with my community. I like doing trail work, it’s much different from what I do weekdays at work. I still also remain quiet involved with Save the Pine Bush, especially coordinating an leading the hikes, ๐ถ research ๐ and helping out with the dinners. ๐
Also got a lot of other things done that were necessary โ …. I got my hair cut ๐so I’ll look nice for the work presentation I’m doing this week in New York, took the paper recyclables โป to the paper ๐ dumpster at the Park and River. The paper garbage can was getting a little full at home and I don’t like to burn that much paper at camp as it’s kind of hard to burn ๐ฅ. Paper doesn’t burn as easy as you would think, especially the glossy papers.
This afternoon will be mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 71 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 18th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 6pm. Northwest wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 77 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1945.
After the trail work day ๐ท at Holt Preserve I collapsed in bed. ๐ด I was exhausted. I slept awful last night because I had a cup of strong coffee โa my coffee often is after work to have enough energy to do my evening walk. While I fell asleep early, I didn’t sleep well with some pretty crazy nightmares. ๐ญ
Later this afternoon I’m going to go and walk out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐ธ. I always like the walk ๐ถ out there and it’s nice to have the bathrooms ๐ฝ out there to take a piss when I get there. Worse part of hiking in the city. I like being able to pee wherever I want in the wilderness.
The sun will set at 7:19 pm with dusk around 7:47 pm, which is one minute and 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ and temperatures around 65 degrees. I can’t dilly daly too long a Five Rivers ๐ฒ๐ณas the sun is setting increasingly early. ๐ I plan to go shopping later this evening. ๐๐ฒ๐๐ Definitely kind of low on food but I have $3 off coupon at ShopRite.
Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ค, with a low of 54 degrees at 4am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 9th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 7pm. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1978.
As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High 70 ๐ when the sun will be setting at 6:54 pm with dusk at 7:22 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 71 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1895.
Good morning! Happy Beautiful Fall Thursday. The skies are blue, the sun is shining, it’s comfortable, not only too cool or hot. Nice walk down to the bus. ๐ Wore my Carhartt vest for the first time this year. Next Thursday is 6:30Sunrise ๐. Mornings are a bit dark now although surpringly I awoke pretty early, made eggs for breakfast ๐ณ and pasta for lunch ๐ฒ. Mostly sunny and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. โโโโ Even though there is only one sun, I’ll give it four this morning. Calm wind. The dew point is 51 degrees.
Today will be sunny ๐, with a high of 73 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 13th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 8am. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1938.
Last night I went for my evening walk early — before sunset ๐ถ and it was quite pleasant. I’ve gotten out of the habit of the evening walk, and I didn’t want to risk getting busy with the work project I was doing last night, and then miss my walk. That was a good thing, because I ended up working on that project until almost 11 PM.๐ป
A picture perfect autumn weekend on tap. ๐ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 70. North wind around 7 mph. Maximum dew point of 55 at 5pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 55 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees.
I think Saturday I will stay in town, but Sunday go out hiking. ๐ถย I have a lot of things to do around home on Saturday including get my hair cut, but maybe I’ll hike out to Five Rivers in the afternoon. ๐ธ Sunday I may go hiking in the Catskills, or maybe hunting/fishing at Partridge Run. ๐ฃ๐ฟ๏ธ I really enjoyed hiking Hunter Mountain the other day, so I’m thinking another hike would be nice.โฐ
I was thinking last night that it’s been 18 years since the September 11th terrorist attacks. ๐ข A child born shortly after September 11th ๐ถ can now vote in the election this year. โ I was a freshman in college, 18 years old when the attacks hit. That’s half a lifetime ago now for me. It makes the eighteen years between birth ๐ and high school graduation ๐ seem so inconsequential. Assuming I “retire” young to have my off grid cabin and hobby farm ๐ฎ๐ท๐ค, in another 18 years I’ll likely be close to retirement.
One month until my October Road Trip to West Virginia. ๐ย The first day I will drive down to Towanda Penna, then down to West Virginia via Interstate 99 on that Sunday. ๐ I’m hoping for real nice weather, and this being a week earlier then last year, hopefully the leaves will be close to peak in higher elevations, such as off of Spruce Mountain and Canaan Heights.
As previously noted, next Thursday is 6:30 Sunrise ๐ when the sun will be setting at 7:10 pm with dusk at 7:38 pm. On that day in 2018, we had humid, partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 74 and 66 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 74 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1947.
Good morning! Happy Back to School Day ๐! It’s a Hump Day although so far traffic hasn’t been too bad. Taking the express in today. ๐ Wednesday is September 11th ๐ธ. Hard to believe 18 years has passed since then. A child born after September 11th can vote this year. โ I was 18 when the attacks happened, I’m twice that now.
Mostly cloudy and 66 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ There is a south breeze at 13 mph. ๐ wit. There is a touch of humidity with the dew point around 60 degrees. The skies will clear around 4 pm. Not a terrible walk but brisk because I was a little bit late.๐ถ

Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 27th. Maximum dew point of 65 at 3pm. Southwest wind 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Yesterday was a busy day as expected ๐ผ but what got needed to be done got done. I ended up going to the library for a while last night to work on a work project that I had fallen behind schedule somewhat.๐ I was going to work on the blog and some other stuff down there, but the work stuff consumed all my time, and then it was time to go home. Then I ended up going home, and just watching a video I downloaded on my laptop.๐ผ I also put away my camping gear. I misplaced my Bluetooth adapter — I think it’s in my truck but it was getting dark and I couldn’t find it last night.
Still looks like this weekend will be sunny but cool. ๐ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Maximum dew point of 55 at 7pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 71. Maximum dew point of 55 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees.
This weekend I am thinking I’ll get a hair cut, ๐and maybe then on Sunday go hiking ๐ถ before I go out to my parents house, maybe down in the Catskills. Or maybe I’ll head up to Partridge Run and do some hunting, hiking, and fishing. Not totally sure. ๐ญย I don’t want to plan a big adventure to save money, and also because I have a lot of things I need to do around the house, including getting the Save the Pine Bush Map Pyramid Properties Map printed at a print shop before next week. Next Tuesday I’ll be down in New York City, so that will take up most of my day in the evening. The hearing is Wednesday.
Two weeks from Saturday is the Pine Bush Bird Watching Hike ๐ฆ๐ so I will probably stay in town that weekend, and then there is only one more weekend in September — and the first week of October I’m leaving for West Virginia. ๐ So who knows how many more times I’ll get out this month. I do think I want to do a fall trip up to Piseco-Powley Road, although sometimes those campsites get snapped up quickly during hunting season. ๐ฟ๏ธ That said, my West Virginia trip is early enough in October this year so I might be able to do a late October trip.๐
I’ve been continuing to research the various Python and Javascript libraries available for interacting with Renology Rover MPPT controller.ย ๐ณ I am increasingly thinking that’s what I will get around Christmas this year, when sales are available, and I want to hook up the Raspberry Pi to use it to broadcast battery status information to my phone using Bluetooth, and then also read data from the starting battery, and dumping excess current into the starting battery to keep it topped up. Using a Raspberry Pi and the MPPT controller could minimize the amount of wires and components I need to build my smart relay, reducing the chance of failure.๐ป
Today in 1970, Salvador Allende is elected President of Chile. ๐จ๐ฑ Only three years later on September 11th, he would be assassinated with the help of the United States by one of the most notorious tyrants Augusto Pinochet. โ The Price is Right went on CBS for the first time in 1972, and over the past five decades hasn’t changed much.๐ค I used to like watching it on my grandfather’s TV some 30 years ago.๐บ
Also, in 1949 The Peekskill riots were anti-communist race riots directed against African Americans and Jews attending a civil rights benefit concert. ๐ท The catalyst for the rioting was an announced concert by black singer Paul Robeson, who was well known for his strong pro-trade union stance, civil rights activism, communist affiliations, and anti-colonialism.โ The concert, organized as a benefit for the Civil Rights Congress, was scheduled to take place on August 27 in Lakeland Acres.

Good evening! Cloudy and 60 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. โ There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. ๐. The dew point is 53 degrees. A few sprinkles here and there but no heavy rain yet. Kind of a dark and breezy nih in the woods. ๐จThe skies will clear Tuesday around 8 am.
A very brief rain shower โ made me take down the hammock and grab the rain coat but as quick as it came it stopped. I sat by the fire ๐ฅ for a while but decided to hang up my hammock after I leaned over and my chair snapped. I’m not surprised ๐ฒ, I knew it was about to break. I usually only get about a year out of those camp chairs unfortunately. I’ll leave the old one at Walmart for landfill disposal and pick up a new one the next time I’m there.
The wind ๐ caught one of the candles on the ground on fire ๐ฅ and proceeded to start a minor grass fire. ๐พ I was able to stomp it out but I had no idea how combustible the grass was up here.
I fully expect in a few hours maybe less it will start to pour. ๐ฆ But I have everything put away that shouldn’t get wet or would otherwise require drying when I got home. It may very well be a quite wet night but it’s been a good long weekend up north and this campsite is well drained so I expect no flooding here at camp. Probably leave fairly early tomorrow and drive home in the rain and get unpacked. ๐ก Not a big deal. Probably next weekend I’ll stay in town. The following week I’m heading down to New York for work so it will be nice to have a weekend just at home.

Today was kind of a lazy day. I reolacd the other burner in the camp stove and reglued the knob that had come loose and it seems like both burners are working good in the stove. โจ With colder weather ahead I plan to be doing more cooking. I did go for a brief walk but I didn’t hear much squirrel activity I think due to the unstable weather. So it was spaghetti ๐ and meatballs for dinner. At least it seems like both burners are working well on the camp stove. The bulk of the day was spent reading ๐ a book in my hammock about the mission creep of the defense department. As defense increasingly becomes the only department that politicians want to fund, its mission keeps expanding. ๐ฃ
This upcoming week I want to hook up the low voltage disconnect reset button again ๐in case I ever need to reset the power while camping on these longer nights. Doesn’t happen raglan anymore but I hate to be plunged into darkness without an easy way to restore power to the truck cap.
