On the first day of autumn, the difference in sunset between the northern and southern most parts of the state are fairly minimal, but the east-west change in time is fairly typical. Jamestown will have the sun set at 7:14 PM while East Hampton will be about 30 minutes earlier at 6:44.

Length Of Day On The First Day Of Fall

I thought we should put the old myth to bed -- on the first day of autumn that all of earth has the same length of day, and it's always 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. That is not exactly true -- due to refraction of sunlight on the earth's atmosphere, almost all of the world has more then 12 hours of daylight. Towards the poles, you have around 12 hours and 10 minutes of daylight, while closer to the equator, you have more like 12 hours and 6 minutes of daylight. This interactive map will help you understand the length of day, and when to expect the sunrise and sunset on that day.

Summer is ending

A late summer day can lie to you and suggest that summer isn’t over yet. But the changing sun angle and early sunset are a constant reminder of autumn, whether or not you want to believe summer is still here with the warmer weather. Nights still get cold in autumn because you rarely have humid sultry weather this time of year.

There is about 12 hours and 7 minutes of daylight, depending on what part of New York State you are to celebrate the autumn equinox due to refraction of light on the earth's atmosphere. This is The Town of Massena will have the longest day in all of New York State, at 12 hours, 7 minutes and 54 seconds. The Borough of Staten Island will have shortest day, at 12 hours, 7 minutes and 29 seconds. Observation

I was noticing how much the sun angle has changed since summer from my office window this afternoon. By the five o’clock hour the shadows really hang over downtown. In a week or so the sun will be setting before seven and the air has a noticeable chill to it.
