Dormansville – YouTube.

Clarksville South Road (CR 312) and Newry Road (CR 411), the road I grew up on in Dormansville. While the light wasn't perfect, it does show the neighborhood I grew up in rural Albany County.

December 5, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 25 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 14.ย  At times, there is a definite breeze, but it’s helping to melt away the snow. There are 17 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 2 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Some melting but they’re is still a lot of snow and more expected tomorrow into Saturday.

When I first got home, I looked out the window and saw the reflection of what appeared to be a massive fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ reflected in the window. I was a little concerned but as soon as I saw it, within a few seconds the flames disappeared. I wasn’t sure what it is, it turned out to be a barbecue grill they had just lit with a lot of lighter fluid, plus the reflection off the snow. I obviously, if I was in the country, I wouldn’t have thought twice — or even looking out back where they have a fire pit. Heck, some day when I live out in the country, I’ll have lots of fires from heating to bonfires to waste disposal.โ™ป

This evening I went to Tom Ellis presentation over hydroelectric dams and the proposed Champlain Valley power line that would run under the Hudson River. ๐Ÿ”Œ If built it would bring a lot more Quebec hydroelectric to New York City but also encourage construction ๐Ÿšง of many mega dams in New York City. Very problematic. Attendance was light as the County Legislature was having their public hearing on the straws only on request law (one of the silly anti-plastic laws that gives the greenies ๐Ÿ’š a boner ๐Ÿ†) and also a presentation on the towns road diet for Delaware Avenue ๐Ÿšง.

I fixed the code and will post the updated weather tables to the blog tomorrow. โ˜€๐ŸŒฆ Some of the data now is a year old and when I went to run the update script it didn’t work due to changes in the NOAA data report format. But I updated the fields names and its working again.

Finished off the last of the Thanksgiving dinner left overs today ๐Ÿ— after reading a post on Facebook reminding me that Thanksgiving was a week ago. I know in a few days even if I left it in the fridge things would start to mold up. Refrigeration doesn’t stop mold or bacteria growth, it only slows it. See I’m learning something from the book I’m reading on butchering livestock. ๐Ÿ”ช

Road the exercise bike ๐Ÿšฒ some more, watched some of Imagine Acre Woods YouTube, another one of those North Idaho off grid pig farmers ๐Ÿฝ who happens to know North Country Off Grid too. Quite the handlebar mustache he has but I guess if you live off grid by oil lamp, raise hogs and yaks – hairy tough cows ๐Ÿฎ – you can do what you want. He does a lot of trout fishing and camping too on his channel but that’s what you do in North Idaho I guess. Looks like fun.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 20 degrees at 5am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 18th. Maximum wind chill around 14 at 11pm; Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. In 2017, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of -5 occurred back in 1901.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 75% illuminated. The moon will set at 1:13 am. The Cold Moon๐ŸŒ• is on Wednesday night with partly cloudy skies. The sun will rise at 7:09 am with the first light at 6:38 am, which is one minute later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 14 hours and 48 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 10 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will snow likely, mainly between 11am and 3pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒจ, with a high of 33 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 23rd. South wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible. It’s a clipper storm but it could be impactful midday. Two years ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 2001. 12.5 inches of snow fell back in 2003.โ„

In four weeks on January 2 the sun will be setting at 4:33 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 10 minutes and 54 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had cold, partly sunny, snow showers and temperatures between 20 and -4 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 16 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 1890.

Looking ahead, Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 3 weeks, National Bird Day ๐Ÿง is a month away, Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 5 weeks, National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ is in 7 weeks, 5:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 11 weeks, Palm Sunday ๐ŸŒด is in 4 months, Cinco de Mayo ๐Ÿค  is in 5 months, Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 22 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 6 months.

Good night I’m tired!

What Did Max Weber Mean by the โ€˜Spiritโ€™ of Capitalism?

What Did Max Weber Mean by the โ€˜Spiritโ€™ of Capitalism?

We use the word ‘capitalism’ today as if its meaning were self-evident, or else as if it came from Marx, but this casualness must be set aside. ‘Capitalism’ was Weber’s own word and he defined it as he saw fit. Its most general meaning was quite simply modernity itself: capitalism was ‘the most fateful power in our modern life’. More specifically, it controlled and generated ‘modern Kultur’, the code of values by which people lived in the 20th-century West, and now live, we may add, in much of the 21st-century globe. So the ‘spirit’ of capitalism is also an ‘ethic’, though no doubt the title would have sounded a bit flat if it had been called The Protestant Ethic and the Ethic of Capitalism.
