While the job market has rebounded nicely since the Great Recession, one segment of the population hasn't shared in the recovery. Men between the ages of 25 and 54 are still less likely to be working than they once were, says Melissa Kearney, an economics professor at the University of Maryland.
In 1968, about 95% of men in their prime working years held jobs. The number has fallen to just 86%, even though today's job market is ultra-tight.

Kearney says the recovery and employment growth in the past five years are very encouraging. But, she says, "I still see a lot of data that suggests we have structural challenges, and we need to be doing more to try and draw more prime-age workers back into the workforce."
Good morning! Happy Repeal of Prohibition Day 🍺! Good day for beer specials at your friendly local bar. Three weeks to Boxing Day 🥊. Partly cloudy and 33 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. β Already above freezing, seeing a bit more melting. There is a southwest breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. There are 17 inches of snow on the ground. β We will look back in the 2020s and 2030s and remember the olden days in 2019 when we had so much snow. οΈTemperatures will drop below freezing at around 3 pm. βοΈ
Sidewalks are getting better and should continue to improve in Delmar 🚶 with the today’s sun but maybe some black ice come later with the falling temperatures this afternoon into evening. Friday is supposed to be pretty cold. Deep snow means I can’t cut across the traffic island to get to the express bus 🚏which means that I have to use the crosswalk signal 🚸 which can be a lot slower.
Today will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 2pm. Partly sunny 🌦, with a high of 38 degrees at 11am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 8th. Breezy, with a southwest wind 8 to 13 mph becoming west 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 2001. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1902.β
The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 11 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 32 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 12 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 11 seconds over yesterday.
Snow banks remain quite high β along the South Maul Arterial which seems to make traffic go through it slowly. But it’s moving and I’m not driving 🚍 so I have little to complain about.
Heading over to John Wolcott house 🏡 this afternoon for more of the history project. 🔎 This is really close to done so I’m thinking maybe only one more night this month after tonight. I just have a lot of other things to do in the coming weeks, especially with the holidays upcoming. 🎄
Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 22 degrees at 5am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 13th. Maximum wind chill around 19 at 12am; West wind 11 to 16 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of -5 occurred back in 1901.
Cool this weekend with temperatures running 7 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. π Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 31. Light and variable wind becoming northwest 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 34. Typical average high for the weekend is 39 degrees.
I think with the breeze 💨this weekend it might be pretty cool but Sunday I want to go skiing 🎿 at Five Rivers before heading out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. 🍲 Maybe Saturday will be a stay at home day although I guess I could ski the rail trail if it ain’t too cold. Regular season ends Sunday then I’ll have the woods to myself besides the black powder guys and gals. Much better to small gane hunt and camp βΊ when you have the woods to yourself.
As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Boxing Day 🥊 when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. On that day in 2018, we had cold, mostly sunny, snow showers and temperatures between 22 and 8 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1895.
