Albanyโs D&H Building and How it Grew โ Friends of Albany History
Over the years there were a number of other tenants including the “Albany Times Union”, and federal and state government offices. By 1970 the building was in significant decline. Then Chancellor of the State University, Ernest Boyer, announced in 1972 the University would purchase the building from the D&H and make it, and the old Federal Building on the corner of Broadway, the HQ of the State University. It was dedicated in 1978.

I get email or text alerts every time a new charge or payment posts to my credit card or bank account. This morning I was concerned about a $32 charge, as it’s rare that I buy something that is a round number. It turns out it just was my grocery bill from Saturday — for some reason the the groceries worked out to be exactly $32. I’ll have to check the receipt which is in my truck, but that’s what I remember it being close to when I went shopping.

Not even the pandemic could keep the Dow from breaking a major milestone: the 30,000-point barrier.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average powered past 30,000 for the first time Tuesday after President Trump allowed the transition process to begin, even as he has yet to concede.
Investors had been growing worried that Trump's refusal to allow proceedings to begin would hamper President-elect Joe Biden as he prepares to take office.

November 24, 2020 Morning
Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Next Tuesday is December ๐. Partly cloudy and one degree above freezing for my morning walk. โ There is a northwest breeze at 11 mph. ๐. Definitely a nice sunny morning although a bit breezy. The sun is a welcome change, it’s been so cloudy and gray lately. But that’s normal for November.
After missing my morning walk ๐ถ๐ป the past few days, it’s a beautiful day for sure. Brisk but that’s to be expected in late November. I really enjoy the fresh air and sat out back last night for a couple of minutes until it got too cold out. ๐ I hate when I miss my walk but sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate. ๐ง๏ธ
I am heading downtown ๐ for a while for meetings and paperwork. ๐ I washed my mask ๐ท and it’s hanging out to dry now. I am going to shower ๐ฟ and bring my laptops ๐ปto use at work. I told John Wolcott I’d be over later this afternoon to continue looking at old files. ๐
Today will be sunny ๐, with a high of 39 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 6th. Northwest wind 7 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 2014. 8.8 inches of snow fell back in 1898.โ
Solar noon ๐ is at 11:43 am with sun having an altitude of 26.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 3:44 pm with the sun in the southwest (235ยฐ). ๐ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:27 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 17 seconds with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 35 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ Moon in the southeast (127ยฐ) at an altitude of 29ยฐ from the horizon, 249,985 miles away. ๐ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:33 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ and temperatures around 36 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 45 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will have a chance of snow, mainly between 2am and 5am. Increasing clouds ๐จ, with a low of 28 degrees at 9pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 27th. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light drizzle by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 36 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1938.
The propane lantern stopped working again. ๐ฎNo gas through it at all. I disassembled it and cleaned the valve with WD 40 and blew it out with compressed air but didn’t have any luck. Still not passing any propane. Months ago I discovered it was caked with black carbon which I removed. The lanterns are $29 at Wally World so I think I might just get another one and save the old one for parts – namely the glass globe which costs like $10 and I manage to break every few years. While I have electric lights, the propane lantern uses very little fuel and is bright ๐ and doesn’t shut off on under voltage. I will however run this lantern through the extra Big Buddy filter to avoid issues with it plugging in the future.
A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 49. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 47. Typical average high for the weekend is 43 degrees.
I am still planning on heading to the Adirondacks this weekend. โบ It will be for two nights. While I certainly want to avoid the Black Friday crowds during the pandemic ๐คง I think I can get in and out of Hannaford on Friday on my way up avoiding the crowds. In my experience, Buy Nothing Day usually means the grocery stores are pretty empty. ๐ People still have a lot of turkey ๐ฆ to eat the next day.
As previously noted, next Tuesday is December ๐ when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. On that day in 2019, we had snow and temperatures between 28 and 17 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 41 degrees. We hit a record high of 67 back in 1934.
