Rural Grafton is God’s Country
Driving back through rural Grafton earlier this evening around dusk, I got thinking how much I love the rural upcountry once it turns gray as November approaches. From the wild turkeys and deer along the road to the wood smoke to the old houses and shacks to the many shades of gray and brown in the hills around, I’m reminded this is truly God’s Country.

I always got a little confused by the lyrics, though. Maybe it was because he sang so low, but I could never understand what Bolan was saying. What exactly is a “hub cap diamond star halo”? Actually, I wasn’t even sure I was hearing it right; are those the right words?
Millions of Americans have long wondered what a "hub cap diamond star halo" π is. The internet has the answer.

October 14, 2020 Morning
Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. πͺ I heard camel milk isn’t that good. π₯ Two weeks to Average High is 55 π. Winter is coming, probably in Biden’s America. Mostly sunny and 44 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind.
It’s a pretty good morning β but mornings are so dark. Out for the morning walk πΆπ» and it’s quite nice with the leaves changing π. I have to hurry back as I have to send in a revised memo π after a client called π and wanted some changes. While it doesn’t seem like I’ll be able to head to Madison County tomorrow with the weather I’m thinking about maybe Friday or Saturday. βΊ I still need to open up the boots π’ I got yesterday as I’m am wearing the dressier black boots that I got for work during the winter months. βοΈ
Today will have patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, sunny π, with a high of 66 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 1st. Maximum dew point of 47 at 11am. Light west wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 1920.
Solar noon π is at 12:42 pm with sun having an altitude of 39Β° from the due south horizon (-31.8Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour π starts at 5:37 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (253Β°). πΈ The sunset is in the west (259Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:15 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 57 seconds with dusk around 6:42 pm, which is one minute and 38 seconds earlier than yesterday. π The best time to look at the stars is after 7:16 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies π and temperatures around 60 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be partly cloudy π, with a low of 45 degrees at 12am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 2nd. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 39 degrees. The record low of 27 occurred back in 1978.
It looks like it will clear out for the weekend. π Saturday, rain likely before 8am, then a chance of showers between 8am and 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 56. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 59. Typical average high for the weekend is 59 degrees.
With the early sunset π and the fact that usually the busiest hour of the day lately is five o’clock, π if I do go out to Madison County it will be on Saturday probably before sunrise π . I have a Zoom Meeting on Monday so I’ll have to plan to use a library Wi-Fi and probably be home Tuesday for an in person meeting although I guess I could do a conference call with my excuse being that my arm ππ»ββοΈ is in a (gun) sling. That said, I fully expect to spend the bulk of the weekend fielding calls and emails, writing and editing memos.
No news π° on when the express bus π service will be resuming downtown. π’ They finally finished the work on Frank Fuller’s baby downtown, the South Maul Flyover and I’m hoping that they have service restored before I’m going to work downtown every day. I’m not looking forward to taking the crowded local π¨βπ¨βπ§βπ¦ downtown especially when the express is much easier. But who knows, the second wave π is coming.
In two weeks I’ll have to make sure to drop off my absentee ballot π³ at the early vote β site. While there are no competive elections locally I think it’s good to have on the public record βΊ that I filled my protest vote with the board.
As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High is 55 π when the sun will be setting at 5:53 pm with dusk at 6:22 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 60 and 45 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 55 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1971.
