You have to think that some are dragging their feet on Coronavirus to make the president look bad. πΎ
While I’m sure it’s not intentional, there is an ideological component and a series of values and views that comes to play with Coronavirus and when to reopen.
Some is most definitely a health concern but you can’t ignore the incentive to crater the economy to make the president look bad. Few people are fully honest in their motives.
Things that I think essential when I own land and an off grid home to live in full time…
Hot shower. Nothing gets you clean like a hot shower. It’s nice to be able to wash off the mud and the sweat after a day working outdoors. Its good to feel nice and fresh on a new day.
A place without a leaky roof. Water causes mold and makes life uncomfortable with dampness. You want to be dry in your home.
A decent amount of insulation and few air leaks. This means less chopping of wood, feeling more comfortable in the cold of winter.
Good morning! Happy Pack Rat Day π! I bet a lot of debris got burned up in people’s bonfires over the weekend π₯ some of it not wood now that the spring time restrictions are over. As a farmer kid once told me back in the day, they can’t see the black smoke if you burn it at night.
Three weeks to Strawberry Moon π. No its not the color of strawberry milk. Idid see some Juneberries up hiking at Thacher Park yesterday. They are fun to pick and eat. The wild blueberries and black raspberries. π Oh sweet cherries. I do need to get to Schoharie Valley and get some fresh fruit come June. Even if Mine Kill is closed this summer there are other swimming holes. π But maybe Governor one percent will change his mind.
A little bit of blue sky today but not a lot. Partly cloudy and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. β There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. π. The dew point is 48 degrees. A surprisingly nice spring day. It would have been nice to get out of town this weekend but the forecast was iffy and I things to do in town plus I’m broke. I mean I got paid last week but it seems like the money never lasts long enough. π΅
Today will be partly sunny π, with a high of 71 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 20th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 1pm. Southeast wind 3 to 8 mph. If it’s nice today, π¦ I’ll grab my binoculars and head out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center to do some birding and exercise. π I’d kind of like this to be a stay home day, as I feel like I drive too much with buses being stopped π and needing to get on the internet from the library. π I’ve really gotten into nature study lately. πΈ
Solar noon π is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 66.8Β° from the due south horizon (-4Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour π starts at 7:33 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (291Β°). πΈ The sunset is in the west-northwest (298Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:14 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 8:45 pm, which is one minute and one second later than yesterday. π The best time to look at the stars is after 9:27 pm. Today will have 14 hours and 42 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 58 seconds over yesterday.
It should be another nice mild night π for sitting out back, even if the stars β¨ aren’t that great. Got to enjoy the nice weather as long as possible before it gets super hot and muggy before winter returns. With the pandemic on tap, it could be a very different summer.

I finally got my 1,200 buck Donald Trump endorsed check. π¨ Happy Election Year! β Corona 2020 for President. It ducking sucks that they couldn’t direct deposit but I’ll have to deposit it on Monday. I am getting good at driving my big jacked up truck through the ATM π§ lane. I’ll put $400 into savings and $800 into index funds. γ½I figure save the money now and eventually turn it into something fun in a decade or two from now like a tractor, π an AR-15 π« or something that makes black smoke and pretty colors in the burn pit. π₯

It’s starting to look like next weekend is back on βΊ based on the forecast. That assumes that I can get Friday off which who knows. But I’m sure the forecast will turn to rain before that in Trump’s Amerika. I’ll have to make a decision before work tomorrow so I can decide to put in for Friday or not. I want to see when my screen tent is going to be delivered πͺ as that will make all the difference with the black flies plus I don’t want it to be delivered while I’m not home. π‘ Otherwise there is always next week.

Looking ahead, Strawberry Moon π is in 3 weeks and Fathers Day π¨ is in 4 weeks.
I've gotten smart over the years when camping. I now take all of the canned goods (baked beans, soup, etc.), double bag them in zip lock bags that can be burned at the end of the meal, and use styrofoam plates and disposable silverware that can all be burnt. That means a lot less dirty dishes and unburnable trash to haul back.
Good evening! Partly cloudy and 60 degrees in Delmar, NY. β Calm wind. The dew point is 46 degrees. Remarkably mild for this late in the night for mid May but then again it is mid May. Seems like it was March the last time I worked downtown, well actually it was. I haven’t been downtown since probably April when I picked up the work laptop.
It was a a beautiful spring day and I spent as much time as possible outdoors. πΈ Things are still fairly gray in the hill towns on the hills but at the same time many other places are quite green. This afternoon I hiked a Thacher Park πΏand this evening hiked at the Pine Bush well after dark π – from 10 pm to 11:30 to be exact.
I would have stayed longer but my knee was aching from the Lyme Disease. π I hadn’t taken the pill before I left for the evening. The doxycycline is controlling the symptoms but I’m not convinced it’s killing the Lyme and it may return when the medication runs out on Monday. If necessary I guess I’ll see my doctor again. π· One good thing about working from home is it makes scheduling easier. Plus I didn’t want to stay too late and be fatigued driving home. π‘
It seemed like the Permethrin worked well on my clothes. π So far no ticks I’ve found and the one black fly that landed on my jeans was crippled before it could bite. Didn’t protect my face from bugs out hiking but my arms were good as I applied Picardin to them. π΅ As much as I have pause about bathing myself in chemicals, ticks are insane this year and I am very worried about getting sick from Lyme and not recovering. Already I’m not doing great. I’m not willing to become a shut in just to avoid ticks.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy π₯, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 21st. Calm wind. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1959.

The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 2017.
So I’m pretty sure I’m going to delay my Memorial Day Weekend trip for the week after. βΊ I’ve been on and off but I don’t think the weather will be all that great for Memorial Day Weekend based on the latest forecast and I’m not convinced that the gates north of the potholers will be open this year for Memorial Day Weekend. Been so wet and I know they had to rebuild the road last fall and with the pandemic everything is messed up. I’m thinking I might take Friday and Monday the week after Memorial Day and camp three nights either at the House Pond campsite or maybe up at Powley Place at one of the sandy open sites where I can use the solar to keep my batteries π charged and hang my hammock and set up my screen tent πͺ for black fly prevention.
I am running low on socks and a few other supplies πͺ which I will probably order from Walmart online but I’ve found it hard to come up with a $35 order for free shipping π¦ as the online store actually lacks a lot of the products that the regular stores would have in normal times. Walmart isn’t stocking any non food items in their retail outlets so if they sell out, it’s gone.
