Really a super nice day. Depending on what my work load looks like and how much network I may need, I might take my work laptop down to the Hudson River and work there this afternoon. Otherwise I’ll sit out back for a while with the laptop then go down to the library later today. I still want to get to Wally World to get the needed supplies too.

The ongoing statement is that cattle and wildlife can’t co-exist and this podcast is devoted to debunking that statement. Adam and Kyle discuss the use of cattle in a grazing rotation that he calls “conservation grazing.” This system uses cattle to replicate historical Bison herds on the diverse landscape to improve habitat for Bobwhite Quail and other grassland birds. This grazing has not only increased diversity on the landscape for grassland birds but also species like whitetail deer. One of the biggest questions by landowners in our consulting business is the possibility of bringing in financial gains on their farm.

Cattle grazing contracts could be a great way to increase income, improve habitat, and increase animal populations. Win! Win! Win! We discuss the differences in grazing patterns you’ll find commonly used on the landscape today and what a herd of cow/calf or stockers looks like and their individual grazing selection. We even take a look at the historical fires and grazing and what the historical landscape might have looked like and how we can replicate it! #ForLoveoftheLand Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

Cows in many ways are the back bone of the rural economy, 🐮 they do more to protect open space and fields and meadows 🌾 for wildlife then any other entity. Parks and state lands are great but they pale compared to the vast lands owned by farm families that provide habitat for billions of deer, grass land birds and other species. Wildlife is much happier in a cow pasture or corn field than a suburban big box mall parking lot. 🅿

May 13, 2020 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. The weekend is getting closer but working from home it doesn’t seem like much of a change. Six weeks to Latest Sunset 🌆. Sunny and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 There is a west breeze at 6 mph. 🍃.

Another sunny but cool day on tap. ⛲ I will probably go for my morning walk 🚶 before walk and get some fresh air before getting down to work at nine. Maybe if it’s warm enough I’ll sit out back for work. 🐦 Birds are chirping this morning but still cool for mid May. But the heat is coming starting in about a week. Going to be hot to round out the month.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 57 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 13th. Northwest wind 6 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 54 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 2004. There was a dusting of snow in 1953.❄

I have a list of things 📃 I’d like to get at Walmart today. I’m thinking of going shopping during my lunch break to avoid the crowds. I need a spray bottle for the Permethrin application to my jeans 👖 as I want to try that out tomorrow maybe after going to the laundromat when there is still sun to dry the clothes outside. I also need to get some socks, frozen fruit for breakfast and snacks, more meat and eggs 🍳. Also maybe another pair of Bluetooth headphones. 🎧

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.9° from the due south horizon (-4.9° vs. 6/21). Doesn’t get much higher in the sky. A six foot person will cast a 2.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:29 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (290°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (297°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:10 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 14 seconds with dusk around 8:41 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:22 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 50 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 34 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 8 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have patchy frost after 2am. Otherwise, clear 🌃, with a low of 32 degrees at 4am. 14 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 2nd. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became light drizzle by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 40 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1996.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. 😕 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 51 at 8am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 49 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 70 degrees.

The weekend forecast still looks decent Saturday ☀ but also not so great for Friday and Sunday. I think my best option is to stay home this weekend. Maybe I will go up north Memorial Day Weekend. If I do that I’ll probably take off a week from Friday and leave before dawn on Friday to ensure that I can get a campsite. Probably Piseco Powley Road ⛺ but maybe not. It depends a lot on the final forecast – saying all of Memorial Day Weekend will be 80 and sunny is uncertain. If I do go up north that will be after spraying my clothes with Permethrin and using the screen house 🎪 as it’s bound to be buggy.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Latest Sunset 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 85 and 56 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

Spring will arrive
