Cheaper, Longer-Lasting Lightbulbs Pose Industry Challenge : NPR

A revolution is upsetting the lighting business as LED lightbulbs replace energy-hogging incandescent ones. This is good news for consumers and the environment; using less energy reduces the greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

But this shift comes with a cost, exemplified by a century-old lightbulb factory in St. Marys, Pa., that is the latest to shut down.

For much of its long history the LEDVANCE facility, 120 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, produced lightbulbs under the Sylvania brand. Now all it produces is scrap metal.

Times change and so do technology. The truth is the modern light-bulb is far more sophisticated then those outdated technologies, and China built the factories to make the inexpensive advanced, highly-efficent switch-mode power supplies and LED panels that make the modern bulbs much more affordable -- rather then the United States. But as technologies advance, it really is a win for most Americans, even if the old technology manufacturers are left behind.

November 26, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Two weeks to 7:15 AM Sunrise βŒ›οΈ. Partly sunny and 45 degrees in Glenmont, NY. There is a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 10 pm. β˜ƒοΈ

Waiting to get in to see the doctor 😷 about the tick bite. Slower day at work and I can’t wait any longer on the tick bite, now that I have the rash on my arm. 🎯 It’s very visible now and I’m a bit sore. It ducks for me but hopefully this will get resolved quickly.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 54 degrees at 2pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 1st. South wind 6 to 9 mph. Beautiful day to not be at the doctors office. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 1979. 9.6 inches of snow fell back in 2014.❄ I remember that storm, I cut short my November road trip. Or maybe that was the subsequent storm – it was a very snowy November that year.

The sun will set at 4:25 pm with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 32 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 54 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 42 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 36 degrees at 2am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 30th. Calm wind. In 2018, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of 8 occurred back in 1957.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 33. Sunday, rain and snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Typical average high for the weekend is 42 degrees. My metrologist Save the Pine Bush friend thinks next Sunday will be very snowy. I’m not sure.

Still thinking about going camping this weekend after Thanksgiving β›Ί but if I’m on antibiotics I don’t think I will be able to drink 🍻 which would make it lot less fun but I still like apple juice and hot chocolate. 🍏 The bigger issue is that potential snow storm on Sunday which could be bad. ❄ Much of the snow will be gone by Thanksgiving by that part of the Adirondacks due to rain and warmer temperatures but things might get icy after temperatures drop with the cold weather expected by the weekend. Maybe it would be better to rest up and recover from the Lyme and maybe finish up the revised blog design and make more maps. 🌐

I could still see a warm up come later in December and maybe then I can take some time from work to do some winter camping if it’s not too cold and snowy. ❄ I just was in the Adirondacks a few days ago I don’t have to repeat the trip right away.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 7:15 AM Sunrise βŒ›οΈ when the sun will be setting at 4:21 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny, mist and temperatures between 36 and 18 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1966.
