We can’t tackle climate change if we ignore the main polluter β€” transportation

"For the past half-century, the story of U.S. transportation has been almost unceasing growth in driving. Post-war transportation engineering valued moving private vehicles faster and further. Across the country, governments built and widened highways to enable flight from cities, and also widened roads within cities themselves."

"These priorities have been reflected in, and abetted by, federal policy. This fiscal year, the government devotes over $41 billion to the federal-aid highway program, with only about $13 billion dedicated to transit and a mere $850 million dedicated to biking and walking (in a set-aside for β€œtransportation alternatives”)."

January 16, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? And early start to my Hump Day, of course. Heading in early this morning on the Voorheesville bus because I things that need to get done early at work. 🚌Next Wednesday is National Cheese Lovers Day πŸ§€.

Gray and cloudy and 27 degrees in Delmar. ☁ There is a south-southwest breeze at 7 mph. πŸƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. 🌑️ Going to be somewhat mild for a change.

Today will have a slight chance of snow showers after 3pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 37 degrees at 1pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around February 23rd. Breezy, with a south wind 7 to 12 mph becoming west 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1995. 15.1 inches of snow fell back in 1945.❄

The sun will set at 4:48 pm with dusk around 5:19 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for snow 🌨 and temperatures around 35 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 24. β˜ƒοΈ Breezy, 20 mph breeze β›… from the west with gusts up to 34mph. Today will have 9 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 10 degrees at 6am. Four degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 2 at 6am; Northwest wind 6 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. In 2018, we had light snow. It got down to 7 degrees. The record low of -23 occurred back in 1971.

Apparently a lot of people ride the earlier bus to work, πŸ‘¬πŸ‘₯🚌 I guess I’ve always known that but rarely do I get such an early start to work. But I have a busy day ahead of me so I needed to get in early.

Tonight is the Save the Pine Bush Dinner, πŸ› which like usual should be really good. Been a really busy week for sure, and tomorrow is a lecture at the Albany Pine Bush commission world headquarters on climate change that I plan on going assuming that the snow holds off. 🌲

I got my new dress shoes πŸ‘žfrom Zappos and I have yet to open them but they look pretty nice online and relatively affordable at $50. I’m hoping they’ll be good quality and last for several years. I do a lot of walking from parking and between building and that can be rough on shoes. 🏦

Still watching that snow storm for the weekend. ❄ This could be a big storm or maybe not. Maybe if we get a lot of snow I’ll go skiing around town, that’s always fun when it’s still coming down. Plus I have other projects that I could work on. πŸ‚

As previously noted, next Wednesday is National Cheese Lovers Day πŸ§€ when the sun will be setting at 4:57 pm with dusk at 5:28 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain and temperatures between 48 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1906.
