July is National Ice Cream Month β€” and Sunday, July 18 is National Ice Cream Day (in the US)! Flavors range from the classics β€” vanilla and chocolate β€” to the adventurous β€” jalapeΓ±o and cicada. But for some people, including ice cream scientist Dr. Maya Warren, flavor is only one part of the ice cream allure. So in today’s episode, Emily Kwong talks with Short Wave producer Thomas Lu about some of the processes that create the texture of ice cream, and how that texture plays into our enjoyment of the tasty treat.

Good Evening – July 25, 2021

Good evening! Night 3 of summer vacation. πŸŒ‡

Today I got moved into the campsite β›Ί that I’m hoping to camp in for the balance of the week. It’s a nice quiet campsite with vehicle access so I can use my camper shell rather than the tent like last night.

Stayed close to camp today, doing a lot of day drinking, 🍻 reading πŸ“– and listening πŸ‘‚πŸ» to podcasts. Burritos 🌯 for dinner tonight. No cell service here, so I won’t be playing with my phone all evening πŸ“± which is nice. I’d rather just enjoy the solitude. Also hiked to Teeter Pond and to one of the pastures to observe the sunset.

High level smoke haze and 74 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. There is a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 64 degrees.

The sunset πŸŒ‡ wasn’t too great at all. The sun was very red and faded away into the clouds high above the horizon. I was pretty disappointed πŸ˜₯ about it especially after walking down the very muddy Backbone Trail to an even muddier pasture. Really needed my barn boots πŸ‘’. Next time if I hike back for the sunset.

Camping Along Hope Falls Road

It has been a few years since I've camped back along Hope Falls Road, north of Spectulator but it was a nice change to go somewhere in the Adirondacks different. Hiked back to Tenant Creek Falls twice during the weekend, and then out to Wilcox Lake. East Stoney Creek had a decent amount of water for cooling off in it but the currents were pretty strong.

Agricultural Easements In NYS

Yesterday I posted a map of conservation easements in the Adirondacks. Most of them are timber easements which by definition are quite large. Agricultural easements, which focus on preventing farm land development are much smaller typically as individual farm patcels are much smaller in New York State. Many of the easements are in high development, high tax areas like the Hudson Valley, especially the Taconics but also development rights have been purchased for areas with particularly high quality soils like the Genesee Valley.
