My winter sleeping problems return.

This winter I’ve developed a problem I often have by the second half of the winter – trouble sleeping. I can get to bed at a reasonable hour but I still have problems getting to sleep and and then waking up early in morning and then not being able to get back to sleep.

Tired Dog

Spending time out in the wilderness is the best treatment I know of for sleeping troubles. I need to plan at least a night or two hot tenting before the month is done. March it might be mild enough to truck cap camp or maybe some time in a lean to. Real darkness, the light next to the fire helps enormously.

Roaring campfire

I’ve tried keeping the lights dimmed in my bedroom in the evening, using more red light to counteract the impact of blue and UV light from screwing with sleep. That helps as does having the lights dim automatically as the night progresses and it’s the time I should be getting to sleep. That feature is still being rebuilt on the new microcontroller.

But it’s still not as good as good natural air that you get with windows open or camping in the wilderness. I’m sure though it won’t be that long until those days return.

Good evening! Partly clear and 19 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 1 pm. 🌡๏ธ

I decided to stay home tonight, ride the exercise bike 🚲 for a while, have some dinner and read 📖. There are other things that I could have done but I was tired 😴 and decided to call it a night early. Almost done reading that book on Storm Lake Iowa. 🌽 Reminds me a lot of the colorful people I knew growing up in a small town.

Sink seems to have freed itself up but I’m going to avoid using it and will go out tomorrow and get more drain solvent after the Guilderland Planning Board meeting I’m attending. No need to make multiple trips. 🛀 I got a little paranoid when I opened my mailbox 📬and saw an add for a plumber – they’re reading my blog – and marketing to me but the truth is I only mentioned it in the morning and it came as a large flat in the bulk mail. At any rate, if it was a serious problem I’d call my landlord 📞 and he’d have it fixed quickly. Nice thing about renting although the plumbing is constantly problematic here.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 12 degrees at 1am. Two degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 11 at 8pm; West wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 0 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1984.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent 🌒 Moon with 7% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:07 am, followed by dawn at 6:49 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:20 am in the east-southeast (117ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 15 seconds. Sunrise is 40 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:03 am with sun in the southeast (124ยฐ) at an altitude of 6ยฐ. Tonight will have 14 hours and 24 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 57 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 36 degrees at 4pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 19th. South wind 3 to 5 mph. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 18 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1906. 12.9 inches of snow fell back in 1987.โ„

It really kills me how much paper garbage I get in my mailbox 📮 every day. Yeah, I have a milk crate where I toss all the non confidential paper trash into and I take it to the recycling dumpster at the park and ride โ™ป every few weeks but by then the bin usually is already overflowing in my apartment and the paper recycle dumpster is pretty full most of the time too. And while they pulp and recycle the waste fiber a lot of it still ends as residue taken to the Colonie landfill. Recycling produces a lot of waste too. Even if I heat with wood when I eventually own my off grid property and use paper every night to start the fire I’ll always have an unlimited supply of waste paper for starting the wood stove just from the junk mail. 🔥 And half of that mail โœ‰ is the glossy stuff that is half clay and produces a ton of ash when burnt and is not good with the glossy coating to burn inside in a woodstove. I guess that the burn barrel can take care of it when I have my own land but it seems like such a waste to cut down all those trees just to burn off the carbon for no real reason. At least no Time Warner Cable ad today but I’m sure there will be one tomorrow.

In four weeks on February 18 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (255ยฐ) at 5:30 pm,🌄 which is 36 minutes and 26 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had snow showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 26 and 13 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 35 and 18 degrees. In another month, it definitely starts to warm up a bit. The record high of 63 degrees was set back in 1981.

Good evening! Snow and 22 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a south breeze at 10 mph. 🍃. The current wind chill is 11. At times there are some good gusts of wind. There is a four inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 8 am. 🌡๏ธ Already warmed up enough that it’s very comfortable in my bedroom and the heat ain’t running non stop.

Decent little snow storm tonight โ›„, many years we’d call it a nuisance snow but this year has been so snow free except for that first big one in December its not been a very snowy winter. For a few weeks before Christmas we had some snow on the ground but recently in the city it’s been gone and based on the latest forecast it seems like it may very well be gone by the end of the week. Snow started around 2 pm here but didn’t make the roads noticeably bad until after 4 pm when I walked home from the library and had dinner.

I am definitely starting to get a cold or a bit of head congestion. 👃 I could feel it especially out walking 🚶 today at Kheler Preserve. I was going to just do Bennett Hill but I decided I hadn’t been on a walk on Wolf Hill in a while and it cleared out for a while so I wasn’t super concerned about having to drive the letter S or Cass Hill in the snow. It was definitely cold out hiking but manageable with gloves, jacket and a hoodie.

Breakfast with the parents at the local cafe was good but once again after eating there I had modestly bad diarrhea. 🍳 I don’t know if it’s from all the coffee โ˜• I drank, the eggs or an ingredient in them but it always happens after going there. It’s kind of a hole in the wall place and the food is decent but it doesn’t do my stomach thing at all. And it’s not been a one time thing. My parents eat there all the time. I’d hate to blame the business but it doesn’t go well with my stomach. 👾 Fortunately I have zero regrets about taking a poop in the woods and wiping my ass with snow and leaves. 💩 Not sure if I’m going to go back to the dinner again though because I keep getting sick and it’s always awkward sitting there with your elderly parents while you wait for food to come out. Somehow Sunday dinner is different, out at their house your not sitting across from them waiting as they’re cooking or doing other tasks around the house 🏡.

Adjusted the exercise bike 🚲 to make the seats and handle bars higher so hopefully it will be easier on my knees. I was surprised that the bolts 🔩 are all metric, it’s my grandmother’s old exercise bike. Rode the bike for a bit watching some YouTube I downloaded. Burned off some of the calories from that game bih

I got the $10 bill in the mail from Nielsen Survey. โœ‰ Cool, real cash sent in the mail. I’ll stick it in my wallet. Now they’re trying to get me to do their week long TV 📺 survey and send back for another ten bucks. This one is paper in a business return envelope. I think I’ll do it, not hard as I don’t own a television or have internet at home. I can let them know that I watched a YouTube video I download 🐮 about milk quality testing and a science video about arsenic, oh and some true trash watching from Demolition Ranch shooting guns and Westin Champlain rebuilding a truck. Probably some of NB88 off grid cabin or Ohio Prepper before the week is up. Actually I’m not sure if I’m going to have to report that stuff I think it’s more cable television. Ten bucks, sure why not.

That said, I am trying to do more reading at home 📖, as I know it’s so much better for you and ones imagination then watching YouTube videos. Sure you can learn a lot from real people on the YouTube – I’ve learned a lot about trapping, hunting, butchering and off grid living even if not all of it is legal in New York. No snares in New York, only foothold or body gripping traps for example. 🔫 Reading is definitely something that I enjoy at camp by the fire or in the tent but admittedly I do less at home. Might do a lot more though at the park come spring time, especially when I get home each night at the 5:40 leaving a lot more evenings free to enjoy with a book at the park โ›ฒ – or I could even read just out back. I found five good books 📚 at the library that I took out and want to read all of them but it depends on how much time I have.

Tonight will snow, mainly before midnight. Temperature rising to around 31 by 3am. South wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible. In 2019, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 7 degrees. The record low of -28 occurred back in 1971.

Tomorrow I want to do some cleaning up in the bathroom 🛁 and around the apartment. I also would like to get to the store and buy groceries after the snow stops, drop off paper 📄 for recycling โ™ป and then possibly go skiing 🎿. Plus more reading 📖 and maybe some soldering I’m not sure the evening. Should actually be quite mild tomorrow but cold for Martin Luther King 👑 day. 💜

January 16, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 26 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Breezy, ๏ธ17 mph breeze from the northwest 🌬 with gusts up to 29 mph 💨💨💨. The current wind chill is 13. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Sunday around noontime. 🌡๏ธ

I stayed home and rode the exercise bike 🚲 for over an hour or maybe an hour and a half until my knees were getting a bit sore and I was tired 😴. I then worked on typing up the catalogue 📇 for John Wolcotts files 📂. We have roughly 220 categories. I need to spell check and do some research and then print the labels 🔖. I don’t have a printer but I think John or Lynne can do it.

I was watching that Canadian trapper video 📹 and then one on Homesteady about first time calving, then an electronics teardown video on Big Clive electronics. Read for a while too. Eat the last of the pork roast 🐖 from the other week that I froze. That was good, pork roast is a treat for a change. As I tend to keep my bedroom cool, use red lighting only and screen filters, I’m already feeling really tired. Going to bed early and getting up early each day has really improved my sleep lately. 💤

I turned the gas heat up to 55 or 56 so it will probably run all night โ™จ but at least things won’t get too cold with the gas heat. I haven’t cleaned off the electric radiator up stairs but I rarely ever use that. I’m fine with keeping things cold – saves energy โšก and I’m comfortable. My main concern is pipes freezing although it is not super cold like some years yet.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 11 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -5 at 6am; Northwest wind around 18 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. In 2019, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 9 degrees. The record low of -23 occurred back in 1971.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter 🌗 Moon Moon with 55% illuminated. The moon will rise at 11:51 pm. You should be able to see it tonight if you stay up late enough. The darkest hour is at 12:06 am, followed by dawn at 6:52 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:23 am in the east-southeast (118ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 18 seconds. Tonight will have 14 hours and 33 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 42 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 20 degrees at 2pm. 10 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 6 at 3pm; Northwest wind 13 to 16 mph. That wind chill is going to be frigid. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 24 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1889. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 1994.โ„

I told John Wolcott I’d go to his house tomorrow after work 📂 but I’ll have my laptop and pack and I don’t want to carry it over there especially with the expected bitter cold โ„. Plus I’m thinking I might have a bit of a head cold. At least that’s what I can tell him assuming he doesn’t read 📖 the blog. Honestly I’d prefer to get the labels done and be working on the final sort before we do much more because the stuff we’ve been finding lately isn’t really all that historically important and interesting compared to previous stuff. I guess you never really know what a box has 🎁 until you open it. He saves too much paper 📄 in my opinion. Especially once I own my own place, I don’t need something it’s getting burnt or put in the scrap metal pile. There is just too much stuff in this world to keep with mass production – buy less and if your not using it, get some beer, get a big ol bonfire going and chuck it in it. 🔥 I can’t wait until I live in the country full time and have toys like four wheelers and tractors 🚜. I already have too much junk for sure and I always avoid buying stuff but it accumulates.

Good morning! Happy Soggy Thursday. Not a lot of rain just slop like that one Memorial Day Weekend I camped at Moose River Plains. Next Thursday is National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€. I do love cheese and all things dairy. Keep dreaming about next week. ๐Ÿฎ Cloudy, some drizzle and damp and 35 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ˜๐Ÿ’ง There is a west breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There a dusting of very sloppy snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at around 4 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

While I got a good sleep last night — I was worried about the decaf coffee at the Pine Bush Dinner โ˜•, I am a bit hazy from the sleeping pill I took last night.๐Ÿ’Š But I did get a good night sleep, all said and done. Laid in bed a little while longer then I like but with the alarm set at 6:30 AM โฐ morning wasn’t bad at all.

Today will have a slight chance of rain and snow showers, mainly between 3pm and 4pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 41 degrees at 10am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 7th. Breezy, with a northwest wind 13 to 18 mph increasing to 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:04 pm with the sun in the southwest (234ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) starting at 4:45 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 5:18 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:54 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 35 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 23. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Breezy, 25 mph breeze โ›… from the northwest with gusts up to 45mph. Today will have 9 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 40 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 11 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -4 at 5am; Blustery, with a northwest wind 20 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Maybe I should turn the heat up a bit when I get home. And wear the comfee blaze orange hoodie I love. I should buy more of them — most of them are now perpetually stained and at least one of them has holes burnt into it from fire. I just like them so much because their warm and safe for walking both on the roads on when out hunting. ๐Ÿฆบ In 2019, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 9 degrees. The record low of -23 occurred back in 1971.

Ever since I go brushed by that truck ๐Ÿšš on Tuesday walking around ๐Ÿšถ I’ve become a lot more careful crossing the streets. That said, you have to be assertive on the crosswalks or motorists might not stop. Eye ๐Ÿ‘€ contact is important with motorists, nothing wrong with staring down drivers when your crossing. That often gets them to follow the law. ๐Ÿ‘ฎ

Snowy this Martin Luther King ๐Ÿ‘‘ Weekend. Saturday, snow, mainly after 1pm. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 26. Light and variable wind becoming south 8 to 13 mph in the morning. โ„ Chance of precipitation is 90%. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 36. Followed by cold next week, so the snow will stick around as will the road salt but it should be good weather for skiing ๐ŸŽฟassuming there is enough snow. Might melt away a on Sunday. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

I think Saturday I’m going to get an early start – no more sleeping in on weekends – and get to the store early before the storm. Depending on the timing of the storm it might be fun skiing ๐ŸŽฟ in the afternoon from home. Or maybe wait to Sunday. I want to do some more scrubbing of the bathroom, especially the red mildew in the shower ๐Ÿšฟ and work on rebuilding one of my electronics projects. Keep working on typing up the John Wolcott index ๐Ÿ“‡. I obviously don’t want to get caught in the storm. At some point I’m going to want to take the bottles and cans to the recycling center โ™ป but I have plenty of room in the trash cans for now, especially if I return the beer cans for deposit. I do need to empty the paper trash ๐Ÿ“„ in the recycling dumpster though. It’s overflowing my bin. ๐Ÿšฎ

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 63 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ

As previously noted, next Thursday is National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ when the sun will be setting at 4:56 pm with dusk at 5:26 pm. On that day in 2019, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 40 and 9 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1906.

Good evening! Partly clear and 35 degrees at One Commerce Plaza. Calm wind.Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 5 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

It was a good Pine Bush Dinner and now I’m home and in bed. 🍲 Bus was right on time but I took a sleeping pill as I don’t want to be kept up by the decaf coffee โ˜• I had at the dinner. Not a terrible day, fairly busy but productive. Kind of sad ๐Ÿ˜ with the death of Chet, who was a big time black powder hunter and ronaduvue outdoorsman who wore full costume and a Pine Bush activist starting with decades ago. Those old school black powder guys are the real woodsman. Seemed perfectly fine 👌 until he missed the last dinner and was dead less than a month later. I guess if your going to die of old age it’s best to happen quickly.

The whole tire burning thing they talked about at the dinner was concerning โญ• but I’m not a scientist so I don’t know. It is a new cement plant went it comes to the on site emissions controls. But on the other side, synthetic rubber is so nasty to burn especially if you plan on burning thousands of tires a day or roughly 45% of the state’s tire production every year . 💭 Things add up even with pollution controls. Little more than a farmer starting a brush pile with a tractor tire on a big ol mid west cattle farm 🐂. I did sign the petition calling for a local law on it but I’m not really sure what a difference it makes. Just don’t know about the things government approves.💀

It’s always funny people after the Pine Bush dinner ask if I want I ride home. 🚙 But after hearing that lecture about the impacts of tire disposal I figured it best to take the bus home. 🚍 Plus I like my quiet time riding the bus. The bus is one of the few times in the day I have all to myself with no other scheduled or potential activity. Cars are such problematic things in cities although I like my big jacked up truck with the 35 inch tires that will probably have to landfilled or incinerated by the end of the year, maybe at La Farge as nobody actually knows if they are already burning 🔥 tires there under their BUD permit.

Tonight will rain and snow likely before 4am, then rain likely between 4am and 5am, then a chance of rain and snow after 5am. Increasing clouds 🌧, with a low of 35 degrees at 9pm. 21 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 8th. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. Going to be too warm. Sloppy but not that bad locally. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1971.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous 🌖Moon with 67% illuminated. The moon will rise at 10:36 pm. The darkest hour is at 12:05 am, followed by dawn at 6:52 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:23 am in the east-southeast (119ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 19 seconds. Sunrise is 27 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:07 am with sun in the southeast (126ยฐ) at an altitude of 6ยฐ. Tonight will have 14 hours and 35 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 39 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain and snow showers before 3pm, then a slight chance of snow showers between 3pm and 4pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 40 degrees at 11am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 4th. Breezy, with a northwest wind 11 to 16 mph increasing to 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 46 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1995. 15.1 inches of snow fell back in 1945.โ„

Got home 🏡 and something was rotting in my garbage can and it really stunk. 👃 I think it might have been the ice cream container. I don’t know but I put it outside. I dug out with my hands, โœ‹ I’m not afraid to touch garbage, and I try to reuse garbage bags as long as possible as I try to use one as long as possible – why pay for something your going to ultimately burn? 🔥 That said I do often buy firewood to use in camp, especially in the winter. โ›บ

I signed the Bernie Sanders petition 📃 today. It doesn’t matter, I’m not committed to vote โŽ for him but it helps ensures he is on the New York ballot. I’ll look and see come April which candidate to support. I think by then we will have a better chance of knowing where the candidates stand on the issues. I am still somewhat leaning towards Elizabeth Warren but in 2016 I voted for Bernie Sanders although at that point I didn’t have strong thoughts on either candidate and ultimately voted for Jill Stein in the general election.

Looking at the Empire Plaza heading down to Chestnut Street 🌰 I was thinking 💭 how beautiful and graceful the Empire Plaza is. I know people bitch about the cost of lighting the Plaza in the evening – it’s not cheap – and it means a lot of coal or gas is burned but it is graceful. I can dream a lot of better places 🌆 but Albany is my home for at least a few more years. I make too much money 💵 , I still have my family locally 👪 to just walk away at this point. I know there are better places out west, great small towns without the craziness 😜 of the city but I’m here for now, it’s my home.

Do I get too invested in Albany? No, I’m trying to structure my life without too many entanglements locally. 🔗 I am not politically involved, I’m not fighting for social justice except for the work with Save the Pine Bush. 🌲I don’t own a lot of stuff or property so I’m not tied down. I have a lot of concerns about the CCA deal the activists are fighting for that would have the town by only green sources of electricity but I’m remaining quiet, observing 🔭 but not saying anything beyond some observations on the blog. It just seems like community choice aggregation doesn’t really bring in much more green energy โšก electricity is fungible but I could be wrong. I still dream of living in a small town out west somewhere on an off grid property. Off grid all my power not from the gas generator would be renewable.

Yes it’s back on as they canceled the Guilderland Zoning Board of Appeals after Crossgates was told they would need state permits to shade out butterfly hill and kill an endangered species. Yeah, it’s shocking ๐Ÿ˜ฎ when the government does its job. Usually it rubber stamps the wealthy interests demands to destroy our environment while relentlessly punishing the colored and poor, all while professing to be not racist or bigoted. I believe tonight’s topic is something on the proposal to burn tires at LaFarge Cement put on Paul Tick amd Tina Liberman of Paul. โšซ I remember years ago when some farmer was burning a pile of brush with a tire in Berne. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Stuff stinks with lots of black smoke, even for a farm, although I expect a cement plant would burn them a lot higher of a temperature. Maybe it’s one thing if you have a big ol’ farm in Iowa or South Dakota and a big pile of brush to burn rather than a big industrial plant in a fairly populated area in an air basin with frequent temperature inversions. At any rate, lasagna dinner at six o’clock ๐Ÿฒ at the Westminster Presbyterian by the Empire Plaza. They always have good lasagana. Two weeks to 37th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰. My gawd I’ll be old then. Only three years until my fourth decade. Next year will mark two decades since I graduated ๐ŸŽ“ from high school ๐Ÿšธ. It should be good decade if I work hard every day for a better tomorrow. ๐Ÿ”ฎ

It’s purty cloudy but mild at 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 4 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Nice that it’s so warm, assuming we see the sun later on. But what do I dare under those florescent lights. Hey at least it’s a distraction free room and ny productivity is high.

Neighbor most have blown out the candle before bed or at least her bedroom didn’t catch on fire ๐Ÿ•ฏ. Maybe my fear is irrational ๐Ÿ˜ฑ but I know how easy it is to accidentally set something on fire and I’ve burned my share of things over the years. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Fire is a remarkably dangerous thing, once things get hot and start to oxidize, things around them can oxidize too. It’s always so important to keep an eye on things when your burning them.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 43 degrees at 1pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 12th. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1995. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1983.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.6ยฐ vs. 6/21). The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:03 pm with the sun in the southwest (234ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) starting at 4:44 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 5:17 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:53 pm. At sunset, look for partly sunny skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 41 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 37 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be sleet likely, possibly mixed with rain and snow. Increasing clouds โ„, with a low of 33 degrees at 8pm. 19 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 3rd. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected. Mostly just slop. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1971.

People are asking why I’ve been taking so much about Iowa lately. ๐Ÿšœ It all comes down to that article I saw last night on the Iowa State Auditor, Rob Sand, the state’s highest ranking Democrat and his decision not to endorse in the presidential race. ๐ŸฆŒ Good for him, no need to take sides. ๐Ÿด Those deer he’s harvested and mounted in his office a beautiful. They have some really big deer in Iowa to say nothing of geese, turkey, coyote and other game species thanks to their amazing soils that grow more than corn ๐ŸŒฝ and feed more than pigs and cows. ๐ŸŒพ

Cool and sloppy this MLK weekend before the big freeze next week. โ„ Saturday, snow, mainly after 1pm. High near 30. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Sunday, snow showers likely, mainly before 7am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees. It might be above normal for the next few days, but then we plow into an arctic blast going into next week, although relatively speaking it’s not going to be the cold. At least my gas and electric bill was reasonable last year — $86 dollars. I’d prefer it to be back closer to $50 but that won’t happen until the heat is off for the season. And spring is coming. But I don’t think I’ll be camping out at least this weekend, and next weekend is the Pine Bush Hike. At least I’ll be saving money by staying home.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 64 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 37th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ when the sun will be setting at 5:04 pm with dusk at 5:34 pm. On that day in 2019, we had snow and temperatures between 29 and 5 degrees. And lots of awful gun bills. At least this year I’ll get to go home at five o’clock this year. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 54 back in 2002.
