January 13, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Make Your Dream Come True Day 🏡! Take it Malvina Reynolds with your very white hair and cateye glasses 👓. Her music 🎶 was very old 👴 and subversive and I hate vinyl siding and green grass lawns free of dandelions unless of course you have a goat 🐐 chained up to a tree in the front yard. On this Monday, the 13th of January.

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same,
There’s a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

That think my dream involves more four wheelers, more fire, more livestock and guns than vinyl siding and chemical treated lawns.🚙 And I like tin roofs as it means a lot less for the landfill every few years. 💭 The idea of surburbanite living with an SUV, a fancy pretentious looking house, weekly garbage service and grid-tied power, does absolutely nothing for me.🚜 Probably more like a tractor supply commercial, or actually real life like the people in places like South Brookfield and Bedford County Penna live their lives.🐮

Mostly cloudy and 30 degrees at the Valero waiting for the local bus 🚍 as I am dress up for the session day today. ☁ There is a southeast breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. 🌡️ It looks like the bus will be on time, and I’ll probably be in early to work, probably the first int he office. But early to rise means it’s another chance to get ahead, make a better future for mysellf.

Spent way too much time ironing shirts 👚 this morning. For some reason they came out of the dryer very wrinkled. ♒I am thinking the issue was they were a bit damp. But I ironed all the shirts I need for the week this morning and to ensure they’re good and wrinkle free, I have them hung in the bathtub 🛁 shower curtain rod so they absorb the moisture in the air in the bathroom. You have to know it’s steamy in there when the bathroom steam set off the bedroom smoke detector on my way out to the bus 🚍. Then I knocked a bunch of papers loose 📄 but at least I caught the early bus in plenty of time.

Today will have patchy drizzle between noon and 3pm. Mostly cloudy 🌥, with a high of 39 degrees at 1pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 1st. Spring is coming, or so I tell myself. South wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 23 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1932. 13.1 inches of snow fell back in 1964.❄ Back when cars were real-wheel drive, and you threw them away at your friendly local landfill every 4-5 years.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.8° from the due south horizon (-45° vs. 6/21). Yeap, we have to wait for 4 pm for the golden hour to start. 🌟 The golden hour 🏅 starts at 4:00 pm with the sun in the southwest (233°). 📸 Not only is the golden hour great for photography 📷 but it is also good for seeing a wild life. I saw a shit ton of deer bushwhacking back to my truck yesterday after the golden hour started yesterday. Went through some brambles and probably picked up ticks 🐜 but so far didn’t see any but I should have checked again.

The sunset is in the west-southwest (241°) starting at 4:41 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 5:15 pm, which is one minute and 7 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 I think the sun will be due east on the first day of spring, which if math correct is 270 degrees west. The best time to look at the stars is after 5:51 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 29 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 30 degrees at 6am. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 27th. Calm wind. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 8 degrees. The record low of -24 occurred back in 1957.

Snowy weekend weekend on tap to celebrate King’s birthday. ❄ Saturday, snow. High near 34. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Sunday, a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 28. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

🌹🌻🌼Only 66 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

But first a big snow storm on Saturday or maybe not. ❄ But we don’t know for sure but it could be a half of foot or more this weekend. 🎿 Maybe good skiing but I doubt I’ll get out to Madison County especially if it’s going to be pretty cold and snowy. But by then it will be only sixty odd days until calendar 📅 spring although that’s a pretty meaningless thing with the often variable weather of March and April. But at least with the first day of spring in 66 and 2/3rd days away trout season 🎣 is will be nigh.

Next Monday is Martin Luther King Day 🖤 when the sun will be setting at 4:52 pm with dusk at 5:23 pm. On that day in 2019, we had snow and temperatures between 21 and 0 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 53 back in 2006.

January 6, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. It’s a five day work week once again. Been a long time since I’ve worked a full five day week but it should be busy and go quickly. Next Monday is Make Your Dream Come True Day 🏡. Maybe that’s a bit too soon for he but I can continue to save and invest. Snow showers and 28 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. ❄ Made for kind of a icy walk 🚶 to the express bus 🚍 this morning and I was running a little late but I made it in time. ⌚ And I did not slip and fall, even those a few times it was a slosh. There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. There are 0.2 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. 🌡️

Finished off the quiche that I made up on Sunday. 🥧 It was very good, and no I did not die or have any bad taste from cooking up the pie shell that had officially expired on November 16, 2016. 😋 It was pretty good and used up a bunch of eggs, with lots of broccoli, 🌱 cheese topping 🧀 and breadcrumbs 🍞 from some stale bread in the refrigerator. Except for the issue of the broiler not working well, it came out pretty good. You know it’s good if it only lasted for two breakfasts, and I was a hurry to have it both mornings. I got to make it again, but I need more broccoli and another pie shell mix, this time maybe with an expiration date six years newer or so.

Kind of a pretty day with the snow ❄ enough to glaze up the sidewalks and ramps. There was a wreck on one of circle stack ramps ⭕💢🚓🚕🚗🚙🚙🚚 and traffic is just generally moving slow today. Warm enough though with the salt that on the major roads, things are moving well if a bit slow. But thanks to Iran and Trump 🎺 there are delays on the bus turn around due to the gates being closed due to the supposed terrorist warnings. It’s annoying how sometimes the bus has to wait for the gates to open and close. I guess they are supposed to keep people safe, but we know it’s mostly to make the contractors rich with security theater.❎

Today will have a chance of snow, mainly before 4pm. Mostly cloudy 🌨, with a high of 37 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 23rd. South wind 6 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. With the warmer temperatures I’m thinking the icy sidewalks won’t stick around. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 2007. 12.7 inches of snow fell back in 2002.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 24.9° from the due south horizon (-46° vs. 6/21). Almost to 25 degrees. Maybe tomorrow? The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:52 pm with the sun in the southwest (232°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (240°) starting at 4:34 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 5:08 pm, which is 58 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:44 pm. At sunset, look for snow 🌨 and temperatures around 36 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 15 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 4 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 25 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 14th. Maximum wind chill around 22 at 9pm; West wind 6 to 9 mph. In 2019, we had light snow in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 14 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1878.

I really am enjoying the big tin of hot coca mix I got from the store. ☕ I wanted to have hot coca for my New Years Eve Camping Trip but I couldn’t find it at Price Chopper, not my normal store, and I was running late. It’s probably good, because those little packets of hot coca don’t always burn up completely when tossed in the fire with the thin layer of aluminum foil, and I was trying to camp in a “tread lightly” fashion, doing as little noticeable damage to the forest as possible. I’m not delusional enough to believe you can camp with zero impacts, but I like to keep my campsites as clean and tidy as possible, with anything that doesn’t full burn get packed out. 🌲 But at home, the big tin of hot coca is wonderful — especially in coffee or on a cold evening. I can always pack some in a ziplock bag for camping. Probably a lot cheaper that way too. I do wish the container it came in was recycable — but I can probably tear off the aluminum parts for recycling and burn the rest. ♻ I normally do not have snacks at home, 🍬 although maybe I’ll break that tradition as this week is $2.99 for all flavors at the Stewarts Ice Cream Special Week. Yum! 🍨 I already see myself falling off the wagon. Fortunately though, I don’t ever have alcohol at home for the most part.🍺

Another rainy but mild weekend on tap. ☔ Saturday, rain. High near 53. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

At least the rain will keep the salt off the roads. 💦I have a lot of things to do in town next weekend including starting working on the Reszin Adam’s video – and possibly heading over to John Wolcott house to work on better labels 🔖 for his files 📂.

🌹🌻🌼Only 73 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

I am thinking about doing a camping trip over Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend in two weekends, 🏕 but a lot depends on the winter. This time if I do Cole Hill State Forest, I’ll make sure to leave a note on my truck where I am in case anybody reports it parked overnight. 🅿 Although, honestly if there isn’t too much snow I would truly prefer to camp up Moscow Hill Area in Brookfield — I just like seeing that beautiful farm country, 🐄 plus it’s nice having those hardened campsites with the gravel and the pavilion. Ideally, if there is no or little snow, I could drive right back there.

As previously noted, next Monday is Make Your Dream Come True Day 🏡 when the sun will be setting at 4:44 pm with dusk at 5:15 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 23 and 10 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 71 back in 1932.

North Adams and Hossack Range

January 5, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west-northwest breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am. 🌡️ The moonlight is nice with the Wolf Moon 🐺 expected Friday.

Hiking in the Albany Pine Bush was delightful but cold. 🌲Pine Bush meeting was all business but that’s to be expected. I donated $100 towards their efforts to hire experts, I encourage you to also donate at RappRoadGoFundme.org. I normally don’t like to spend money 💵 that I don’t have to but fighting development in the Pine Bush is important and honestly I can afford it as I didn’t go to the Finger Lakes last week. I’m not planning any big trips in the coming weeks. It also looks like it will be relatively mild over the next few weeks, helping to save on the heating bills.

A lot of deer were out running by the road tonight. ⚠ Nice how much longer the nights have gotten lately though. I was surprised driving past Tommell Cattle 🐄 on Stove Pipe Road that the lots were empty. I had heard cattle prices were off so it might not be worthwhile for them to be fattening them up right now though. I used to remember how pungent those feedlots were as a kid. Grain can have a pretty strong smell when it rots. 🌾 I think it’s more often the spoiled grain then the manure which is really pungent on farms.

Had a nice ham dinner at the folks house. 🐷 As lately thanks to YouTube I have an obsession with all things pork, I also got a pork roast to cook later in the week or maybe Saturday. They’re pretty good although probably not as good as something you killed yourself. It’s kind of cool though the different worlds and places that YouTube can take you – from the large hog farm to the remote off grid cabin all while on the exercise bike. 🚲

My apartment still stinks from using the broiler. I think there is something that has run into the top of the oven to make it smell 👃I love how the broiler cooks the top of the food but not the smell the oven makes when it’s on. I have no problems with the normal oven. While I was on the bike watching YouTube earlier, I lit a candle to mask the smell which helped a bit. I rarely use candles as I know they are dangerous inside but I don’t like the energy consumption of the plug in models. 🔌 Honesty, when I own my own land if I’m off grid I’ll probably heat with wood and maybe use some oil lamps to supplement solar power in the winter, so fire safety is so important to always practice. ⚠

Tonight will have a chance of snow, mainly after 4am. Increasing clouds 🌨, with a low of 25 degrees at 1am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 14th. Saves on the heating bills. Maximum wind chill around 25 at 12am; Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 22 degrees. The record low of -19 occurred back in 1996.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 77% illuminated. At dusk you’ll see the moon in the east-southeast (118°) at an altitude of 44° from the horizon, some 247,186 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 Almost close enough today you could head up there for the weekend on your space ship. The Wolf 🐺 Moon is on Friday, January 10. Howl! The darkest hour is at 12:01 am, followed by dawn at 6:54 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:26 am in the east-southeast (121°) and last for 3 minutes and 23 seconds. Sunrise is 2 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:11 am with sun in the southeast (129°) at an altitude of 6°. Tonight will have 14 hours and 49 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 3 seconds over last night. Nights are definitely getting shorter now. I noticed quite a bit of light after 5 pm driving out to my parents house from Guilderland.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain and snow before 1pm, then a chance of rain between 1pm and 2pm, then a chance of rain and snow after 2pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 39 degrees at 1pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 1st. Southeast wind 5 to 9 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Sounds like a bit of a sloppy commute tomorrow but bit a bit deal. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 2007. 12.7 inches of snow fell back in 2002.❄

In four weeks on February 2 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (248°) at 5:09 pm,🌄 which is 33 minutes and 32 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 32 and -2 degrees. That’s a pretty big range for a day, cold front come throughout. Typically, you have temperatures between 32 and 15 degrees. The record high of 53 degrees was set back in 1981. Ground Hog day ain’t real warm.

I keep watching what is happening in Iran. 💣It just seems like its going to be a disaster and at minimum it is going to greatly escalate gas prices ⛽ and mean a whole bunch more taxpayer dollars 💵 wasted on security and war machines.

Well folks I better get to sleep. 💤Part of the reason I have been feeling a bit sick lately is I’ve been staying up too late. As much as I enjoy watching stupid YouTube videos of people chasing cows around 🐮 or chopping wood it’s time for bed. My headphones 🎧 were discharged too, another sign of bed time. I also watched an interesting video learning some new techniques for processing meat rabbits 🐰. A good night’s sleep is good being my best at work, demonstrating quality products for my clients, achieving results and ultimately making more money. 💵

Looking ahead, 5:30 PM Dusk 🌆 is in 3 weeks, Ground Hog Day 🐻 is in 4 weeks, Snow Moon 🌕 is in 5 weeks, March 🌨 is in 8 weeks, Daylight Savings Time 🌆 is in 9 weeks, Ides of March ✝ is in 10 weeks, Palm Sunday 🌴 is in 3 months, Easter 🐰 is in 14 weeks (rabbit is a healthy food), Cinco de Mayo 🤠 is in 4 months, Mothers Day 👩‍ is in 18 weeks, Pack Rat Day 🐀 is in 19 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ️⛱️ is in 5 months, Strawberry Moon 🌕 is in 22 weeks and Fathers Day 👨 is in 23 weeks.

Looking Out on Summit

January 1, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 33 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a west breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The skies will clear around 11 pm.

Not a half bad evening for early January, I went out for the evening walk and then laid back in my bed catching up on my YouTube. 📹Mostly just the latest kind of silly update from Keith Fink dairy farm and their silly Jersey cows 🐮.

I had a nice New Years Day fondue with the parents and did my wash out there before coming home. 🍲 There was a crash on Route 32 so it was closed and I ended up being detoured over through Clarksville on the way home. It was fine but the road was dark after my exhaustion from last night I found the driving hard 🚘. Since adjusting my headlights night driving isn’t as bad but I still don’t really enjoy it.

It’s nice to be back home but I did enjoy my night out during the first night of the new year. 🎇 Granted that I only stayed out by the fire until quarter to eleven, then retiring to the warmth of the tent until midnight. Still not sure if I dosed off a bit in the tent before waking up shortly before midnight but it was watching the clock flip over to midnight and then shut off the heater and lights and retire to bed just like I plan to do shortly.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 26 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 16th. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 20 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1970.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 40% illuminated. At dusk you’ll see the moon in the south (178°) at an altitude of 42° from the horizon, some 252,272 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 Keeps getting farther away. Before you know it, you’ll have to plan an extra vacation day to dance on the moon. 🌕 The moon will set in the west (264°) at 11:04 pm. The darkest hour is at 11:59 pm, followed by dawn at 6:54 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:26 am in the east-southeast (121°) and last for 3 minutes and 24 seconds. Sunrise is 7 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:12 am with sun in the southeast (129°) at an altitude of 6°. Tonight will have 14 hours and 53 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 46 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 43 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 12th. I’ll take a sunny mid March like day in January. Too bad it couldn’t happen when I had it off. South wind 6 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1890. 7.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014.❄

I am thinking about washing my truck 🚿 tomorrow and going to the store although maybe if it’s going to rain on Friday or Saturday those would be better days once the salt is off the roads. The truck is so muddy from Madison County and so salty from driving up to Cole Hill. It really was a fun trip between the two nights but certainly different than the Finger Lakes trip I had originally envisioned. ⛺

Somehow that said, I really liked getting away to Madison County. 🐮 It was just so muddy and brown this time of year but I kind of liked the rural character and how different it is from Albany. I just like seeing all the run down houses and farms, they’re real compared to the city, even if the farm country did have a very distinctive barnyard and wood smoke smell this time of year. Plus I like having my truck for camping – it’s a lot of work to drag my gear back to camp that half mile back I was camping last night. 💡 Plus I like all the pretty Christmas lights although with my fully working gas lantern 🏮 it’s not that bad. That said camping last night was more fun than staying home. I really should think about getting back to Moscow Hill later in the winter, especially if they don’t have a ton of snow out there.

I did have quite a bit of trouble with the sled flipping hauling gear out. 💥Not sure the problem, I’m thinking I didn’t have the center of gravity low enough and the snow was cold and icy this morning unlike last night 🌃. Plus the tent poles were icy and I might have been a bit out of it from the previous late night. The propane tank is about half full now so it was sloshing around quite a bit. I got a late start too as I’ve been enjoying sleeping in lately.

I did notice some aching in my knee again today and my arm where I got the tick bite🙋. Mom thinks I should call 📞 the doctor 😷 and see about an appointment now and if I feel better before the visit cancel it. I’ve not been as sick as before I had the course of doxycycline but I do feel like at times I have the residuals of Lyme. I think I should make my health care a greater priority in the coming year – I really need to overcome the Lyme disease and start getting regular physicals and maybe start doing more high intensity exercises besides riding the exercise bike and walking. 🚲 I like the idea of doing more backpacking and back country camping ⛺.

I’m also thinking about getting some mental healthcare this year. 💭 I’m learning more about how having good mental health can improve productivity and mood, plus it would be good to have somebody to bounce idea off of – what to do with my truck when tires wear out – do I keep having a truck, do I stay in Albany, do I go somewhere else and do something new in my life? My dreary basement office 🏢 is just so depressing. I keep learning about how many interesting opportunities there is out west, but am I too afraid to take the jump? 😐 People have told me that I have depression and some of my frustration with the way things are going are due to it. Plus if the Lyme gets worse, rather than better counseling may be helpful. Just a stupid tick bite. 🐜

In four weeks on January 29 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (246°) at 5:04 pm,🌄 which is 31 minutes and 55 seconds later then tonight. That’s my 37th birthday. In 2019 on that day, we had snow and temperatures between 29 and 5 degrees. That was kind of busy, long day for me last year at work, hopefully now with my new 9-5 job it won’t be such a late night. Heck, maybe even get some of those drink specials after work. Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 15 degrees. The record high of 54 degrees was set back in 2002.

Looking ahead, Bubble Bath Day 🧼 is in 1 week, 37th Birthday 🎉 is in 4 weeks, February 🌧 is a month away, March 🌨 is in 2 months, Average High is 40 ☀️ is in 9 weeks, April Fools Day 🤡 is in 3 months, Pink Moon 🌕 is in 14 weeks, Tax Day 💰 is in 15 weeks, Earth Day 🌎 is in 16 weeks, May 🕊 is in 4 months, June 🍹 is in 5 months, Latest Sunset 🌆 is in 25 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 👴🏻 is in 55 weeks.

Branch Light

December 31, 2019 Night

Good evening on this final blog post of 2019 ! Cloudy and 31 degrees at the Cole Hill State Forest in Berne on this New Years Eve. ☁ We had a thunderstorm with some brief lightning and snow. ⚡ ❄ It was windy and intense for about five minutes and then it got quiet. There is a west-southwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. There is about 4 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

It’s hard to believe that New Years Day is only a few hours away and it will be 2020. 🎇 To think it’s already the twenties when not all that long ago it was year 2000 and I was back in High School. I’ll be waking tomorrow to a brand new decade. Although it’s already basically 11 o’clock now and I could if I wanted to stay up the next hour listening to a podcast until midnight. I was outside by the fire until 10:30 when a snow squall and the breeze made me decide to jettison the cold ❄ outside for a nice warm tent 🎪. Maybe I will stay up to midnight 🕛, I’m in no rush to take down camp as things with the dropping temperatures are likely to be frozen early in the day until the sun comes out. Simple breakfast of instant oatmeal 🍚 and coffee ☕ for breakfast tomorrow and then it’s just a 20 minute drive home.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 10pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 25 degrees at 6am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 7th. Even warmer back in the city. West wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. A few good gusts earlier for sure with that winter thunderstorm. The wind is a bit concerning with the ice on the trees being thrown or broken limbs but my campsite is relatively free of widow makers. 🍃 Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 27 degrees. I was up at Cherry Ridge last year and I left the night before because I was worried 😯 about the road being slippery when the ice turned to mud. In retrospect, should have done Moscow Hill horse 🐴 camp instead. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1970.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 31% illuminated. At dusk you’ll see the moon in the south (190°) at an altitude of 37° from the horizon, some 251,948 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀It was kind of a pretty moon tonight and it seems like my astrological calculations are right. The moon will set in the west-southwest (257°) at 10:06 pm. The darkest hour is at 12:00 am (the beginning of the decade), followed by dawn at 6:55 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:27 am in the east-southeast (121°) and last for 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Sunrise is 9 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:13 am with sun in the southeast (129°) at an altitude of 6°. Tonight will have 14 hours and 53 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 42 seconds over last night.

New Year’s Day 🎇 will have isolated snow showers after 8am. Partly sunny 🌦, with a high of 34 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 22nd. West wind 15 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 1966. 9.2 inches of snow fell back in 1961.❄

This year my New Year Resolution is to stay the course 🚢and continue to build a better life for myself. I want to keep saving money towards buying land and an off grid cabin. I might stay in New York for another decade but when the time comes, I want to be prepared. I’ll have to see if Big Red needs repairs and decide on my future of motoring 🏁 or if I should try a life with more biking and local adventures. Sure these winter camping adventures are kind of fun but motoring is so expensive and bad for both the environment and ones health. I probably also drink and eat too much unhealthy food while camping although this time ⌚ I intentionally limited my drinking by packing less beer 🍻 being that I’m out in the real wilderness in the cold. That and I drunk most of it earlier in the week. ⛺ That said, this coming year I plan to spend many nights in the woods and maybe even so a bit more wilderness camping.

In four weeks on January 28 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (246°) at 5:04 pm,🌄 which is 31 minutes and 28 seconds later then tonight. December 30, 2019 Night

Good evening! Cold and damp and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 10 pm. ☃️

We got some pretty good icing midday ⛄ so I’m kind of glad that I stayed home. The commute home in the ice and slush could have been miserable. Never got to upload my photos from my trip as the library was closed. 📙 My truck is not solid froze with ice. I know they predicted it in the outlying areas but I didn’t expect any ice in Delmar. I’ll deal with it eventually. I haven’t been shopping yet this week so I do got to kind of dig it out.

Tonight will be drizzle at times, mainly before 11pm. Cloudy ☁, with a low of 33 degrees at 1am. 17 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 12th. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1895. 7.9 inches of snow fell back in 2007.❄

I looked at a lot of dash cam videos and photos 📷 to share on my blog over the coming days when I get a chance to upload them. I want to better tell my story and how seeing the open farm country and rural lands really made me feel. It was so nice to get away and out of the basement where I work, even if I didn’t make it to the Finger Lakes. I also have been getting really interested in the path of moon and sun and are going to incorporate more astrological data into my blog 🎑 in the coming weeks.

I am leaning towards backcountry camping tomorrow night 🌃 to close out the decade but that’s to be decided in the morning. 🎇 I think they’re is enough snow and ice left out in the hilltowns to drag my gear back on a sled. I’ll have a nice fire 🔥 and toast out the end of the decade. I might even buy some egg nog or hot coca to have around the fire. It will be a simple campsite with the heater to keep me plenty warm. Too much ice and snow might make it hard to get a fire going. Not a done deal though for sure.

Rays Across the Reservoir

December 29, 2019 Night

Good evening! Rain and 33 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a east breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. Back home on this rainy evening. It would have been fairly miserable camping tonight and it looks like we are stuck in this rainy pattern for a while, then it will get cold. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Wednesday around noontime. ☃️

I got home and unpacked. 💼 Not too difficult as my gear didn’t get that muddy and I only had one day worth of food and clothing packed. Moreover I’ve been leaving more and more of my camping gear in the truck year round and I have seperate cooking utensils now for at home versus at camp. 🍴 I had fish for dinner 🐠 and started looking at storing the dash cam photos and videos 📹 I got. Tomorrow I’ll walk down to the library and upload them if it’s not raining too hard. It’s kind of nice that I don’t have to work tomorrow.

New sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 53 was set in 1984. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 2000.❄

I have tomorrow off because the original plan had me out camping. ⛺ It will be a bit of a staycation I guess. Tuesday if there is still snow left in the hilltowns I’m thinking to a local state forest to back country camp in a hot tent for New Years Eve 🎇 but the key 🔑 is I need snow on the ground and roads not too icy for that to happen. No guarantees at this point.

I do want to do more winter camping for sure. Ideally I’d prefer to stay somewhere I can drive my truck to so I have electric 💡 and gear nearby but that’s not a show stopper for me. I’m really interested to find out if Moscow Hill campground is plowed, as that would be perfect even if it’s just far enough to get off the road. That said, I bet there are a lot of snowmobiles that assemble in that area going brap brap all winter long but even so I bet it thins out at night. 📞 I’ll have to call the DEC office in Sherburne and find out. Also if the snow isn’t deep I should be able to get there as the ground is really solid there due to the reinforcement for the horse trailers and hooves during the summer 🐴.

I don’t know but I was just taken in by the beauty of Southern Madison County and Northern Otsego County. 🐮 Yeah things did kind of smell earthy and like cow poop 💩 but that’s country living. The browns and the grays were pretty, they stirred something in my soul. I think it’s so fortunate to those who are able to chip a life out of the rural country, if by agriculture and one of many other jobs, some small, some decent paying but all tough with limited opportunity compared to the big cities.

Between the forested, snow covered hills full of wildlife and the rich farmlands below its such beautiful country. ⛲ So many quaint old farm houses and run down trailers, homesteaders with a family pig 🐽 or cow to muddy farms with old fashioned tie stall barns 🐮, milking twice a day with surge milkers and fifty year old open cab tractors with box spreaders. Weeds growing up around broken and forgotten farm equipment, piles of manure rotting away to be spread someday in the future. Trees to be split and someday warm the farm house. Four wheelers for fun and getting around the farm, a goat 🐐 tied to a tree, piles of junk to be scrapped some day or burnt to a crisp in a bonfire. 🔥 Rural scenes like this exist across the nation but I live in the city and make my money 💵 doing the urban thing now saving for a better tomorrow when I can own land in a freer state and have an off grid property, hopefully in an area as beautiful and wonderful as Southern Madison County.

I’d someday love 😍 to live in a place like that but not in an oppressively liberal state like New York which doesn’t really understand rural communities. After all two out of three New Yorkers live in the metropolitan region 🚇 – that is Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester, New York City and Long Island. Might soon be 70 percent of New Yorkers. Pennsylvania is nice but it kind of suffers from the same problem – and its also an incredibly expensive state to live in especially with the recent gas tax hikes ⛽. City life may be getting better, as may regulations for fair commerce with business but its also an incredibly hard to make it in the small towns. I don’t think Trump is the answer but neither is his counterpart closer to home who exists 180 degrees out of phase but in many ways is similar.

2020 is going to be a big year for all of us 🎇 but my hope is it will be another step forward towards a better life. I’ll work hard and try to advance my career and help my company grow and move forward. What’s good for them is ultimately good for myself. 💼 I know working in the windowless basement office 🏢, paying my dues, someday will pay off with more career advancement, more money to save 💵 towards that off grid property out in the country.

Climate change will probably really kick in during the next decade, and it’s going to be a wild ride for mankind. I don’t think whatever comes out of the next election in the coming year will change that but it will bite us in the next decade and prove that we are doing much too little too late. 🌎 People use per capita stats to blame the guy with the rusty pickup and burping cows in the tie stall barn in Madison County but if you don’t look at the big cities for the root of the problem your just playing games with statistics. 🔢But my focus is enjoying life and saving for a better future and not saving the world.

In four weeks on January 26 the sun will be setting at 5:00 pm,🌄 which is 30 minutes and 26 seconds later then tonight.
