March 3, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Super Tuesday. Pay day for me it makes it super duper for me. 💵 Well at least I’ll have funds to pay the non stop bills. No chance to vote for the democratic nominee in New York until April though. ❎ Two weeks to St. Patrick’s Day 🍀. Partly cloudy and 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. β›… There is a south-southwest breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 2 am. β˜ƒοΈ

I was super groggy 😴 when I got up this morning but I made it to the bus on time ⌚. Not a hybrid bus 🚍 today. It is such a nice mild morning I thought about walking down to the express but I don’t like doing that in my suit and tie. 👔Bus ride to work is like every other day

Today will have showers, mainly after 2pm. 🌞 High of 59 degrees at 2pm. 20 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 16th. I like April weather. Maximum dew point of 44 at 5pm. 🏖️ Haven’t thought about the dew point in a while but I’m sure hot and sticky nights can’t be far away. South wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 2002. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 1994.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:08 pm with sun having an altitude of 40.8Β° from the due south horizon (-30Β° vs. 6/21). Now we’re starting to gain a sunlight faster in the morning than in the afternoon. A six foot person will cast a 7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:10 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (256Β°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (262Β°) starting at 5:45 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:16 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon in the south-southeast (150Β°) at an altitude of 69Β° from the horizon, 239,073 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:49 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 53 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 21 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers, mainly before 11pm. 🌧 Low of 38 degrees at 6am. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 16th. South wind 10 to 16 mph becoming west after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2019, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1950.

I’ve been having a lot of trouble with the WordPress app lately 📝 so I haven’t been able to post as much lately. I am also hard at work with the blog revisions, getting the new upload and media engine tested and ready for launch. I also need to keep prepping both the historical images so I have several ready in the can to feature when the time comes.

I am dug around and found the $1,000 I needed to open up an IRA. 👴 I mostly just canceled other planned investments and dipped into my rainy day fund to make it happen. I just got paid so I should be okay. I am going to contribute to the IRA rather than the Roth IRA for the rest of the year to somewhat limit my tax liability. It sucks that I’ll have to pay taxes on withdrawals when I retire but when I have my off grid property it will be in a low tax state so I’m not that worried about it. 🐮

Back in 1972, an airplane crashes in suburban Albany, off Holmesdale Ave in Albany (near Colvin Avenue and Washington Ave). ✈ Regional Carrier, Mohawk Airlines Flight 405 crashes as a result of a control malfunction and insufficient training in emergency procedures. 📙 Also today in 1873, U.S. Congress enacts the Comstock Law, making it illegal to send any “obscene, lewd, or lascivious” books through the mail. And in 1991, an amateur video captures the beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles police officers.

A picture perfect early spring weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 38. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 49. Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees. I bet the ground will be muddy in the woods. My weekend is fairly free but I’m not totally sure what my plans are for the weekend. Money is tight so I might stick around town Saturday, hike at Schodack Island buy groceries at Aldis and then Sunday hike at Partridge Run.

🌹🌻🌼Only 16 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 when the sun will be setting at 7:04 pm with dusk at 7:32 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2019, we had mostly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 36 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1990.

 Typical winter 2016 afternoon

March 2, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cloudy, damp and 50 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a south breeze at 9 mph. ☁ Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 3 am. β˜ƒοΈ

I went over to John Wolcott house 🏡 for a while this afternoon and continued going through his files 📂. Not a lot of very interesting files to be found today but you never know what will turn up. It’s been over a year since I started and were running low on files to go through. Still gotta talk to Lynne about the labels.

Did a little reading 📖 on this Read Across America Day, and I plan to do more reading in the coming weeks especially once it gets a little nicer and I can sit out back with a book 📙.

Missed out on my evening walk 🚶 because by the time I got home and dinner cooked it was after nine. βŒ› Too bad it’s kind of a nice night 🌃 but a bit cloudy and damp.

Progress continues on the code for the historical vs modern ortho photos slider section of the blog. 💻 The slider just uses a jquery library, all the work is adapting the data structure in the blog to handle the multiple photos. But now it’s mostly at the testing stage before I start uploading files.🌐 Getting close though – if I didn’t have to spend so much time fixing my stupid mistakes I could have pushed it live sooner. 🔜

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain before 4am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 39 degrees at 5am. 18 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 19th. The darkest hour is at 12:08 am, followed by dawn at 6:01 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:30 am in the east (99Β°) and last for 2 minutes and 56 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:08 am with sun in the east-southeast (105Β°). Tomorrow will have a chance of rain, mainly after 2pm. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 55 degrees at 2pm. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 7th. Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 2002. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 1994.❄

March 2, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Read Across America Day πŸ“š! Nothing beats a good old fashion book, especially on a nice evening down at the park or up in the woods. Great way to pass time, especially on a rainy day at camp. Last night was the first quarter moon. Next Monday is Worm Moon πŸŒ•. Cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south breeze at 9 mph. πŸƒ. The skies will clear around 1 pm.

Kind of a gray and cloudy morning ☁ today. Going to be mild for sure. The heat on the bus 🚍 is ridiculous but I’m a bit hot because I had to run home and grab my lunch which I left on the kitchen table. Feeling better this morning, although this roaring hot bus makes my throat feel sticky and cough a bit. But I am not sick, or so I tell myself.

This afternoon I’m going over to John Wolcott house 🏑 as long as I feel okay πŸ‘Œ. I was feeling better last night but I took a sleeping pill πŸ’Š to make sure I got a good night’s sleep before the work week but this dry and hot air on the bus is no good for my throat.

Today will have a slight chance of rain or freezing rain before 11am, then a slight chance of rain after 5pm. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 53 degrees at 4pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 3rd. South wind 9 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1991. 11.9 inches of snow fell back in 2018.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:08 pm with sun having an altitude of 40.4Β° from the due south horizon (-30.4Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. Sun angle is getting higher, which means fewer real cold days, and even if we do get snow, it won’t stick around super long, at least in the valley. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 5:09 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (255Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (262Β°) starting at 5:44 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:14 pm, which is one minute and 14 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter πŸŒ“ Moon in the south (183Β°) at an altitude of 69Β° from the horizon, 242,018 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:48 pm. At sunset, look out for possible rain showers 🌧  (but I hope not) and temperatures around 51 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 15 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of rain before 7pm, then a chance of showers, mainly between 7pm and midnight. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 37 degrees at 6am. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 13th. South wind 8 to 13 mph becoming light southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had light snow in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1950.

Today in 1989, Twelve European Community nations agree to ban the production of all chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by the end of the century. πŸ’ It turned out not to be a big deal, because HCFCs were already common by then, and newer refrigerants were well on their way to coming on the market. Now, they are phasing out refrigerants that have a high global warming potential for more climate friendly ones.🌍 Certainly it was an easy enough fix for consumers, with minimal cost or inconvenience, most of the hard-work — engineering — had to be done by the manufacturers. Not sure if the other climate goals can be done just by engineering, despite the fact that people want to drive their electric cars to Wally World πŸš— generated by massive solar facilities not in their backyards.

I am continuing to work on the blog code ⌨ to re-write the uploader to handle multiple images to allow the before and after images to be saved under the same page ID. It’s actually a bigger re-write then that, but it will make uploading imaging much faster and reliable for me, making it easier for me to design content for the blog. I am really fascinated by what I can put together with those old aerial photos in comparison to modern ones. It’s going to give a lot of content to blog about.πŸ–Ό

I decided to grow back my sideburns a bit, πŸ’‡ after cutting them shorter and shorter. They’re kind of long now, I haven’t decided how long I am going to keep them. Maybe a bit too long now, but that’s to be decided. We’ll see as things get warmer out.

This week I need to rearrange my finances to find the $1,000 I need to open an IRA account. πŸ€‘ I have had a Roth IRA account for years, and I enjoy the fact that I’ll never have to pay taxes on it, but now that I’m working in the private sector and don’t have the advantage of a 457(b) Deferred Compensation, I am getting killed by taxes despite maximizing my 401k.πŸ‘«So I am doing the IRA thing. Actually, this my make sense if I eventually move out west to a state without income tax on retirement savings — or at least a high threshold — New York is $18k tax exempt. My only concern is that I might have a big tax bill in the future, if I cash out a big chunk in my later years to buy a tractor or implement 🚜 or a new truck. πŸš— I don’t make that money, but it’s obnoxious that I pay more in income tax each month then rent. βš– Thank you government for spending all of my money.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 36. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 44. Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees. Might be a nice weekend to get out of town. But where? A lot of places are still closed off due to the snow and mud.Β I could possibly use a sled and drag back gear for tent camping in the back country, but the snow might be kind of soft and melty. Maybe it’s just best at this point to save money πŸ’Έ and wait for the spring time, which ain’t that far away. πŸ’

🌹🌻🌼Only 17 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

Going past the Elbow Room I noticed that they have a giant Corona Beer neon sign on their window. 🍻 I’m sure that’s good for business today. Myself I’m just looking forward to warmer weather and having a cold one up in the woods next tot he fire. I don’t normally drink but I do like a cold Corona on a hot day next to a fire, as gross as the bottles get before you return them. Summer road trips and camping up on Piseco-Powley Road can’t be too far away. I really like laying out back on the hammock.

As previously noted, next Monday is Worm Moon πŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 6:55 pm with dusk at 7:23 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2019, we had sunny and temperatures between 42 and 12 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 41 degrees. We hit a record high of 81 back in 2016.

Snow Covered Bushes

March 1, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy March 🌨! Finally things should start to get a bit warmer. Average high by the end of the month is around or may be above fifty and maybe even warmer if the trend continues. Next Sunday is Daylight Savings Time 🌆. Mostly sunny and 27 degrees at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. There is a northwest breeze at 15 mph. 🍃. That breeze makes things kind of raw today for my walk which I delayed out to Five Rivers 🚶. Its not so bad in the Vlomans Kill Valley but not elsewhere in Things will start to thaw out at around 3 pm. 🌡️

A cold day today with the wind 🍃. The sun is nice but the wind is bone up chilling. I woke up this morning with a bit of a headache πŸ‘Ώ and a little achy but not so bad that I missed my Sunday walk 🚶 to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. I probably have Coronavirus but I haven’t drunk any beer 🍻 since my birthday 🎂 over a month ago, and I was drinking Blue Moon 🎑. Honestly, I’m looking forward to Corona beer being on sale come the summer so I can have a nice cold drink with a lime come summer. 🍋

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 35 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 18th. Northwest wind 11 to 15 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 2017. 10.7 inches of snow fell back in 2005.❄

I think later today I’ll go out to Huyck Preserve 💦 and check out the water falls assuming that I have time before going out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. 🍲 I can’t believe another week has come to a close and next weekend will be Daylight Savings Time. At least it’s a sign that nicer weather is coming. β˜€

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 40Β° from the due south horizon (-30.8Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:08 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (254Β°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (261Β°) starting at 5:43 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:13 pm, which is one minute and 14 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter 🌓 Moon in the south-southwest (209Β°) at an altitude of 63Β° from the horizon, 244,820 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:47 pm. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of -4 occurred back in 1940.

Today you better remember your reusable bag 🛄 if you’re planning on shopping. I am not – I have enough groceries and will run to the store later in the week 🏬 and maybe wash my truck again. I’m thinking 💭 about going to John Wolcott house 🏡 on Monday but it all depends on how I feel.

I also am working on rewriting the media engine for the blog 📝 to handle the historical photos with before and after pictures you can drag across. The main issue is fixing it so that you can have two photos associated with one media type. It can be done but will require some changes to the code to make it work. It will be neat when it’s done.

🌹🌻🌼Only 18 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

As previously noted, next Sunday is Daylight Savings Time 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 6:54 pm with dusk at 7:22 pm (Daylight Savings Time). Fantastic but it will make the weekend go by in a blink. On that day in 2019, we had cold weather like today, but mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 34 and 7 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 41 degrees. We hit a record high of 68 back in 2012.

I went out for my evening walk 🌃 and the skies were filled with stars ✨. The breeze had died down so it wasn’t quite so cold which was nice. I spent some time working on the blog code and geo referencing old photos of Plattsburgh and Syracuse for future updates on the blog. Neat stuff ahead.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 14 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around January 27th. Tomorrow morning bright and early 🔆 I’ll probably head out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center and then maybe to Huyck Preserve. I like doing the morning walk 🚶 then an afternoon hike in the hilltowns taking in the scenery before heading out to my parents house. I just like the rural landscape. 🐮

February 28, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Well Happy, Yappy, Scrappy Friday! Final Friday of February, tomorrow being a presidential year its Leap Day – February 29th. All because the earth 🌎 rotates around the sun in 365 1/4 days. Honestly, I think it would be better to add an extra 6 hours to New Years Eve but I don’t make up the calendar πŸ“…. Or maybe that would better to do on January 1st, with all those folks who are hung over? 🍾 Two weeks to 7 PM Sunset πŸŒ†. Partly cloudy and 24 degrees in Delmar, NY. β›… There is a west-southwest breeze at 14 mph. πŸƒ. The current wind chill is 12. Things will start to thaw out at around noontime. 🌑️

Cold and gray but at least it is not raining today. ☁ Aggressive bus driver today, left right at 8:26 from the park and ride 🚏she’s always accelerating and braking really hard. Makes for a quick ride in for sure. Always like taking the express in on non session days, as I get a nice walk plus it’s more scenic and a faster bus ride 🚍. It actually wasn’t a bad thing that most of the earlier half of the week was session days — it was too cold and wet to walk down to the express bus for most of the week.

Today will have a slight chance of snow showers after 3pm. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 34 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 14th. West wind 14 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 39.3Β° from the due south horizon (-31.5Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 5:05 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (253Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (260Β°) starting at 5:41 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 57 seconds with dusk around 6:11 pm, which is one minute and 14 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter πŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (233Β°) at an altitude of 46Β° from the horizon, 249,433 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:45 pm. At sunset, look out for possible snow showers 🌨 and temperatures around freezing.Β While not guaranteed we will get lake effect snow, it could mean tricky conditions heading home. There will be a west-southwest breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 20 degrees at 6am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 27th. Maximum wind chill around 11 at 5am; Southwest wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to degrees. The record low of -2 occurred back in 2008.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a high of 28 degrees at 2pm. 10 degrees below normal. West wind 10 to 16 mph. Going to be a cold and chilly day for Leap Day. Look before you leap, the lake is probably frozen. Sounds like a good day to stay home, work on some soldering projects, ride the exercise bike, maybe come up with some new content for the blog, and go down to the library and get more books.πŸ“š A year ago, we didn’t have leap day, as it wasn’t a presidential election year. The record high of 54 was set in 1976. 4 inches of snow fell back in 2012.❄

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 34. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees. I think that will be the best day to get out and do something fun in the wilderness. 🌲Best of all, it will be cold enough, at least in the hill towns that everything won’t be mush and muck. Instead, it will be frozen. Although if not, I do always carry at least my inexpensive, non-insulated farm muck boots in my truck.

🌹🌻🌼Only 20 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 7 PM Sunset πŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 6:59 pm with dusk at 7:27 pm (Daylight Savings Time). Westkill Mountain from Hunter

February 27, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cold and cloudy and 28 degrees in Delmar, NY. ❄ Breezy, ️20 mph breeze from the west-southwest 🌬 with gusts up to 38 mph 💨💨💨. The current wind chill is 15. That wind is kind of wicked. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 11 am. 🌡️
