Good morning! Happy Thursday. Rain with a bit of snow mixing in and 40 degrees in Bethlehem, NY. β˜” For a while it was pouring out. If it was the olden days, I am sure it would have a big snow storm. Days like this I don’t mind working in the dungeon. 🐲 Breezy, ️17 mph breeze from the west 🌬 with gusts up to 28 mph 💨💨💨. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 6 pm. β˜ƒοΈ

With the rain outside and a bit of sniffle 👃 I’m off to work. My eyes are a bit irritated 👀 but that’s not uncommon in the winter on damp days like this. That said after recovering from the Lyme this past December I’ve been quite healthy, maybe because I’m not exposed to so many people like when I worked in the Capitol. 😷 Depending on how I feel after work I might call 📞 John up about his files 📂 but we will see.

Today will rain likely before noon, then a slight chance of rain and snow showers between noon and 1pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 41 degrees at 8am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 7th. Breezy, with a west wind 17 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 15 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1997. 3.6 inches of snow fell back in 2019.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 38.9Β° from the due south horizon (-31.9Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. Not that you will see your shadow today unless maybe you are talking about the shadow a roof casts to the rain. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:04 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (253Β°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (259Β°) starting at 5:39 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 57 seconds with dusk around 6:10 pm, which is one minute and 15 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the west-southwest (240Β°) at an altitude of 36Β° from the horizon, 251,004 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:43 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 34 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 22. β˜ƒοΈ Breezy, 24 mph breeze β›… from the west with gusts up to 41mph. I am glad I won’t need my umbrella in such conditions. Today will have 11 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 22 degrees at 6am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 4th. Maximum wind chill around 8 at 6am; Breezy, with a west wind 17 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. In 2019, we had light snow in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 10 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1950.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, a slight chance of snow showers after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 28. West wind 8 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Definitely seems like a good day to do projects around the house. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 35. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees. Maybe Sunday I’ll go hiking again. Maybe Five Rivers bright and early than Thacher Park OSI parcel although this time of year I might want to wear my farm muck boots 👢 for hiking there. Like I thought I’d need for Partridge Run last week but turned out to be a reasonable amount of snow.

🌹🌻🌼Only 21 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

Two months 📅 from now will be Arbor Day 🌳 when the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm (Daylight Savings Time). By then the evenings will be long enough should I decide to go to the Adirondacks after work for the weekend.

Good evening! Cloudy and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. We aren’t getting the blizzard they have in Western NY. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 5 pm. β˜ƒοΈ

I was going to go over to John Wolcott house today 🏡 but I had a pounding headache for a while at work and was feeling kind of sick. After getting home and getting some food I felt better. Spend several hours working on analysis of various things for Save the Pine Bush. 🌲I might go over tomorrow after work if he’s free, depending on how I feel. I messed up the report I was doing for work and had to redo a big section of it which was annoying. Little different than the previous draft I had done. It had to altered to fit the other model. πŸ‘Ώ

Tonight will have a slight chance of drizzle before midnight, then rain, mainly after midnight. The rain could be heavy at times. 🌧 I can see it out west on radar. Low of 39 degrees at 10pm. 18 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 16th. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 8 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. In 2019, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 8 degrees. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1940.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 11% illuminated. The Worm 🐛 Moon is on Monday, March 9. The darkest hour is at 12:09 am, followed by dawn at 6:09 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:38 am in the east-southeast (102Β°) and last for 2 minutes and 58 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 34 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:16 am with sun in the east-southeast (108Β°). Tonight will have 12 hours and 53 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will rain showers before noon, then a chance of rain and snow showers between noon and 4pm, then a slight chance of snow showers after 4pm. Temperature falling to around 33 by 5pm. West wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 15 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1997. 3.6 inches of snow fell back in 2019.❄

In four weeks on March 25 the sun will be setting in the west (274Β°) at 7:13 pm (Daylight Savings Time),🌄 which is one hour, 33 minutes and 18 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly sunny skies and temperatures between 46 and 28 degrees. I bet that was a nice day but I was stuck in the office late. 🏢 Typically, you have temperatures between 48 and 29 degrees. The record high of 74 degrees was set back in 1910.

Good morning, Happy Hump Day. 🐫 People still talk about the farm in Vermont that has the camel in snowy Vermont although it’s not a desert camel. Drizzle and roughly forty degrees this morning, going to warm up a bit with showers on and off this afternoon.🌧 More rain for the overnight.

Today will have a chance of rain. Cloudy 🌧, with a high of 43 degrees at 3pm.Β That said, as of now, most of the rain is staying north. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 12th. North wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. That would be groovy, the last time we were there, Nixon was just starting his second term after recently defeating George McGovern. The best time to look at the stars is after 6:42 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers 🌧 and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a northeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 49 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain, mainly after 10pm. 🌧 Low of 40 degrees at 11pm. 20 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 22nd. East wind 6 to 9 mph. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1940.

Yesterday I finished up my taxes and submitted them to the IRS. πŸ’ΈAt least I don’t owe the feds any but I will be paying the state $217. Which is all the more obnoxious as I’ve been making quarterly payments of $50 to the state to cover the investment income. They want me to do $98 a quarter next year. Living in New York is so expensive. And it’s not just the taxes – all the silly little mandates and state imposed costs on business adds up. Now I’m all for consumer protection and helping the vulnerable individuals but stuff adds up every time you go to store to buy anything from gasoline to cherries.πŸ’°

All of which is why I’m looking to move out west or maybe south where life is a lot more affordable. 🏑 But that’s a few years off. In the mean time, I really got to look at moving forward on my IRA account — I’ve been doing a Roth IRA as I’m pretty young now, but with the cost of taxes these days, I got to look at at reducing my tax liability. When I worked for the state I could do Deferred Comp but that’s not an option for me working in the private sector, and the 401k has a silly cap on it. At the same time, I’m trying to save pennies wherever I can so I can afford that off-grid property so I have to be careful to not put too much into retirement. Eventually when I own land, and if the property is off-grid, I can save a lot more money then livingΒ  in the city, but I’ll be a lot tougher on the vehicles.🚜

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 28. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 30. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees.

🌹🌻🌼Only 22 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼 It will be here before you know it. Seemed like only a few days ago it was weeks away. Before you know it, I’ll be able to do more traveling and exploring.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Average High is 40 β˜€οΈ when the sun will be setting at 5:48 pm with dusk at 6:16 pm. Good evening! Clouds and 41 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. Bit cooler than expected when I went for my evening walk. 🚶 No rain yet, but it’s definitely coming. At least it is not snow. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 7 pm. β˜ƒοΈ

I was going to go over to John Wolcott house after work 🏡 but he’s at an event for lent. Fat Tuesday? 🍩 I don’t know or understand all the catholic traditions. βž• Tomorrow I guess is Ash Wednesday but that’s not an all day thing. β›ͺThat’s fine, I ended up staying home, figuring out why I couldn’t get the old OrthoPhotos of the Pine Bush to geo reference correctly but it was a setting issue. It really is amazing how you can match up a few intersections and the software adjusts the photo or map to line up with all the rest of the data. I am also doing shadow analysis on the buildings for Save the Pine Bush. I also rode the bike for a while and went for my evening walk 🚶.

A Few Leaves Remain

February 25, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. One day closer to the weekend. Three weeks to St. Patrick’s Day 🍀. Mostly cloudy and 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ The skies kind of remind me of a November day. But then again this time of year is not that dissimilar to November, especially on a relatively mild day like today. Calm wind. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 5 pm.

Yesterday I discovered this great archive of historical aerial photos dating back to 1952, 1960 and 1973.🌐 While the 1960 ones are large scale and the 1973 ones are on a fairly low quality medium at least when their scanned in the 1952 ones are fantastic. They are no georeferenced but at least with the cities 🌆 that easy enough to do. I’ll be posting a bunch to the blog in the coming days. I’m also using them for analysis with Save the Pine Bush. Also been working on doing some shadow analysis, writing a program to do that. With computers it’s possible to quickly do shadow analysis of a whole year in a few seconds.

Today will have a chance of light rain, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 50 degrees at 3pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 28th. I’ll buy it. February 24, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Off to work on this sunny and pleasant Monday morning. Maybe not warm enough to open the windows but I doubt the heat is working much. Next Monday is Read Across America Day 📚. It just needs to be nice enough to go down to the park.

Mostly sunny and 40 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. There is no snow on the ground. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 6 pm. ❄ I approve of this even in Trump’s America.

Listening to Switched on Bach on the way to work today. 🎶 So futuristic. That album will never get old. Too bad that Wendy Carlos won’t allow it on the YouTube. Many people don’t realize that the Moog corporation is headquarted in Buffalo, New York. 🐃 Buffalo is kind of a rough industrial 🏭 city.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 56 degrees at 3pm. 19 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 10th. South wind 5 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had light drizzle in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 74 was set in 2017. 8 inches of snow fell back in 1962.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 37.8Β° from the due south horizon (-33Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:00 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (251Β°). 📸

Today will have 10 hours and 58 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 33 degrees at 6am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 3rd. Light and variable wind. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1914.

Cool to kick off March with temperatures running 10 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. πŸ˜€ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 29. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 28. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees. Honestly, it should be a nice weekend and most of the snow will be killed off by the rain this week. But maybe not in the higher elevations?β˜”

Looking forward to getting through February this week and March starting Saturday. 🌸 Saturday is March 1st. A week from Saturday is the time change. Some years I get out camping in March, a lot depends on the weather and how long the snow sticks around especially in the higher elevation. I don’t see a lot more snow in the future 🔮 but who knows how long winter will last.

I don’t think the heat kicked on at all this weekend with the sun hitting the roof, at least today.

It was a good weekend β˜€, lots of sun and time in the woods. While I decided against doing any camping, it was still nice in the wilderness. Visited Schodack Island, Albany Pine Bush, Five Rivers Environmental Education Center and Partridge Run in one weekend. Not too bad. 🌲🌲🌲🌲

Been trying to figure out how to do shadow analysis in QGIS. 🏢 It would be great to do with all the buildings proposed by Crossgates and the impacts on Save the Pine Bush. The formula for shadows is simple as I noted yesterday if you know the altitude and direction of the sun. But adding the shadows of a specific length for each building in QGIS is not able to be automated as far as I can figure out.🌐

Spring and the last of the snow will be hear before you know it. I‘m thinking about taking off several days in April around Easter to take a road trip. β›Ί Have some nice nights in the wilderness.
