January 1, 2023 Night

Good evening! Made it to the New Years Day, 2023. 🎇 I mean I assume it’s 2023, but I was well asleep by the time the ball dropped. I was tired yesterday, went to bed at 8 pm 🛏 and was up before five 5⃣ this morning.

A new year to climb, 🪜to save invest and grow. I don’t know if there will be as much growth in the markets this year as last or if I will be able to invest as much as last year but I’ll do the best I can in the world I live in. Even if I can’t get as close to owning my own land 🚜 as I want this coming year I can grow in other ways like continuing to learn new skills, expand my mind and keep up with my steps. 🧑‍🏫 Another year, a new mountain ⛰ to climb. 🧗‍♂️

19,500 steps today 👣 which could have done better if I got an earlier start walking 🚶 but the morning was cold ❄ and gray. Once we get more snow 🌨 and it’s colder I really want to see more of Bender Mellon Preserve with the skis 🎿 on.

Partly cloudy and 38 degrees in Delmar. 🌃 Not bad for 9 pm on New Year’s Day. Heats been off for a few days now, haven’t used the heated blanket either. Somebody is having a campfire in the neighborhood, I could smell the smoke out walking. There is a west breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 5 am. ☃️

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 35 degrees at 12am. 17 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 10th. West wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable. In 2022, we had light snow in the evening, which became mist by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1970.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon with 79% illuminated. At 8 PM, the moon was in the south (176°) at an altitude of 64° from the horizon, some 241,769 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by July 4th. Buckle up for safety! 💺 The Wolf 🐺 Moon is on Friday, January 6.

Maybe it would have been fine out in Madison County ⛺ and fun to get away but last night was pretty wet even if it was mild. Plus it’s a long drive out there and I’m not sure this would have been banner weather for hiking and camping today. Probably cold damp and gray. ☁️ Plus with inflation I’ve been trying to stay closer to home. Maybe in two weeks I’ll camp up in Rennselearville again. That would be fun.

The darkest hour is at 12:00 am, followed by dawn at 6:54 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:26 am in the east-southeast (121°) and last for 3 minutes and 24 seconds. Sunrise is 7 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:12 am with sun in the southeast (129°). Tonight will have 14 hours and 49 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 48 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 46 degrees at 1pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 18th. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light northwest in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 49 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1890. 7.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014.❄

I’m thinking a Bennett Hill Hike 🚶 in the morning on my way out to the folks house for a New Years Day fondue. 🫕 Ain’t that neat their is a fondue emoji, probably paid for by the Swiss Cheese cartel 🧀 or more likely the Dairy Farmers of America cooperative 🐮 these days.

Today marks four 4⃣ weeks until my big fortieth birthday 🎂. I know wow, I guess. It’s just another milestone and a round number but I’ve noticed a lot changing in my life as the years drag on with other things not changing as fast as I’d like. But I think my forties offer a lot of possibilities especially once the economy recovers.

In four weeks on January 29 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (246°) at 5:06 pm,🌄 which is 31 minutes and 56 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had cold, partly sunny and temperatures between 14 and 0 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 33 and 15 degrees. The record high of 54 degrees was set back in 2002.

Looking ahead, Bubble Bath Day 🧼 is Next Sunday, Coldest Week of the Year 🌬 is Next Sunday, 38th Birthday 🎉 is in 4 weeks, February 🌧 is a month away, March 🌨 is in 2 months, Daylight Savings Time 🌆 is in 10 weeks.

33 Nights I Camped in 2022

This was a tough year for getting out of town. My truck was getting creaking and old, rusted and always in risk of breaking down, though the only failure I had on vacation and that was a stupid loose lug-nut. But with high gas prices, inflation, and my desire to invest more in the markets, kept me home more then most other recent years. I also focused on destinations where I could camp for multiple nights, after parking my truck and leaving the engine off to save fuel. Many of the prime weekends of the year were raining.

Ultimately I camped 33 nights, which is about normal for me, though the trips were longer and closer to home.

My first camping trip of the year started out in February during President’s Day Weekend, February 20-22 at Rensselaerville State Forest. Winter camping and skiing, took a walk down to the explore the new OSI Parcel that will eventually be added to the state forest.

Campsite 2

Second trip of the year was up to the East Branch Sacandaga River, April 22-24, which is always my big April trip complete with a big bonfire, hiking along the East Branch and back to the Gorge Falls.

East Branch Sacandaga River

Third trip of the year was to Piseco-Powley Road’s House Pond Campsite, three nights, June 17-19, including exploring this previously unknown to me swimming hole. Had another big fire, spent a lot of time at the swimming hole across the way. Also visited the potholers a couple of times in the evening.

Swimming Hole Off Old Edick Road

Then from June 19-21, I moved up the road to Powley Place Campsite 9 for two nights. Hiked back to Goldmine Stream Falls and then on Tuesday hiked back to Big Alderbed.

Powley Campsite 10

The forth trip of the year was July 16-19th which I camped up Campsite 5 on Piseco-Powley Road, about a mile north of the Potholers. I don’t love this campsite, as much as House Pond but it was still within walking distance from the Potholers, and is remote enough that I can listen to music as loud as I want, have big fires and shoot guns.

Campfire

Fifth trip of the year was the Finger Lakes National Forest, camping off old Chicken Co-Op Road from July 30 to August 8, as my GPS likes to call it. Stayed at the same campsite all week, alternating between trips away from camp and staying in camp, mostly to save fuel and reduce costs. Brought my kayak, paddled Cayuta Lake. Spent a lot of time at Watkins Glen State Park. Had that loose lug nut on my truck.

Finger Lakes Sunset

Sixth trip of the year was to the Adirondacks, Labor Day Weekend and the Friday before, September 2-5th, namely that campsite in Perkins Clearing on Hardwood Hill up above Spectulator where I have excellent cell reception and can work remote. It was kind of a lazy trip with lots of clams, sweet corn and beer, though that Friday I worked remote and was busy with work, and then did day hikes from camp, specifically exploring Mud Lake Road, where I ran into a family of bears. It poured on Labor Day when I took down camp.

Morning view

Seventh trip was a mid September remote-working trip up to Rensselearville State Forest, one of a series of three autumn trips up to the state forest only about 40 minutes from home. I chose to go there as I knew I could get home quickly if necessary with work being so busy, plus knowing I could get home if there was something I couldn’t do with my data plan on my cellphone. I think the dates were that Friday when I remote worked — September 16-19th.

Catskill Mountains

My eight trip was Columbus Day Weekend, Friday October 7 to Monday the 10th. I had originally planned to head up to the Adirondacks, but on my way up north, around Glenville I noticed my truck was swaying more then I would like around the corners, despite just recently being checked out at the shop. Plus heading up to the Adirondacks meant I would have dead spots, which was bad when I was supposed to be remote working, supervising three major political campaigns across the state. So I turned around and headed up to the Heldebergs. Ended up going to Rensselaerville State Forest again, for a colorful trip, especially when I hiked along Cheese Hill Road to the new OSI Parcel overlooking the Catskill Mountains and rural lands of Schoharie County and Potter Hollow. I probably should have brought my gun and got my hunting license, but I was constantly on the phone dealing with one crisis or another for work. Also spent Columbus Day hiking around Huyck Preserve for the bulk of the day before heading home, showering and going out to visit the folks.

Cheese Hill Road

My ninth trip of the year was back to Rensselaerville State Forest. This trip was planned to be there, the last week of Friday to Sunday, October 28-30th, while working heavily remote as the political campaigns I was managing was in their last stretch. It was kind of a chilly weekend and busy with work. But I had my heater, and I did find time to get out and walk, as the colors faded away. It was a nice weekend but it reminded me that autumn was certainly on the way.

Taconics

The tenth trip of the year was back to the East Branch Sacandaga River. Hike back along the Stewart Creek Trail and camped for two fairly cold nights from Thursday December 8 – Saturday December 10th. Came back a day early as I wanted to check to see if I had jury duty. It wasn’t a bad weekend but everything was first cold from the previous day rain, and then everything was icy once things froze up. But I stayed warm by the campsite.

Back camping at the same site tonight

The eleventh and final trip of the year was to Rensselaerville State Forest, right where I started the year close to home. The snow was deep this time, some 2 feet deep with an even deeper snow bank to dig through. But I hot tented there for two nights, from Tuesday December 20-Thursday December 22. This was the only trip of the year when I didn’t camp in my truck.

Winter camping ?

Conclusions

I wouldn’t rank this as my greatest year ever, with the most adventures. But I made the best of the situation with inflation increasing the price of camping supplies and fuel for my big jacked up truck, which became more unreliable. Work was super busy with all those campaigns. The weather was often bad for the prime weekends of the year. But I made the best of the year.

December 28, 2022 Morning

Good morning! Today is the 4:30 PM Sunset 🌆 . Evenings are starting to get a bit longer. Of course the 5 pm sunset come later in January is when you really feel it. Those days will be upon us before you know it. Winters aren’t what they once were unless you live in Buffalo 🐃.

Cloudy and 23 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. ☃ Things will start to thaw out at around 11 am. 🌡️

After a fairly dark and gray start to the morning, a bit of a fiery sunrise 🌅 to start out the day. Since Saturday I’ve been exceeding my steps 👣 goal every day after a previous week that wasn’t so good. 16,500 steps yesterday or about eight miles. My boots 👢 though are in terrible shape at this point. Been debating what to get, thinking about getting boots with higher ankle protection especially with the risk of ankle injuries higher in the winter with the ice. Not sure, those boots are more expensive than I wanted to spend.

Town finally got salt on the sidewalks on the icy patches. ❄ I think the town parks department maintains the sidewalks and they don’t work holidays or weekends. So they were slick for a few days where there was snow melt with the cold.

Today will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a high of 39 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 14th. South wind 6 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1982. 7.0 inches of snow fell back in 1967.❄

I am totally in love with Governor Kristi Noem and her flame thrower. 🔥 I guess she’s my hero because she burns her trash, and smells a little like cow shit. 🐄 I mean, she is from South Dakota and runs her family ranch. Kind of like Sonne Farms, a Youtube channel I often watch which both of those things are the case. Flame throwers are popular with conservatives these days, I’m sure some crazy will burn down a building and all the left-wingers will be clamoring to ban them, as they are fun, and liberals hate fun unless it’s having sex with strangers. 🚯 Mostly because conservatives like them, as a fun way to burn wet household garbage. 🗑 I’ve thought of getting a propane weed burner, their little brother, for starting campfires and other hard-to-burn debris but they are a bit expensive, not nearly as a cool, and it seems like just another thing to own. Maybe when I own my own land and have more crap to burn. 💸 No income tax in South Dakota, cheap and often good ag and forest land, the Black Hills. ⛰

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:58 am with sun having an altitude of 24.1° from the due south horizon (-46.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:44 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:30 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 5:01 pm, which is 43 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter 🌓 Moon in the south (181°) at an altitude of 40° from the horizon, 230,448 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:37 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 36 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, an increase of 32 seconds over today.

I did not get to the store yesterday or wash my truck. 🛻 It was surprisingly cold last night and I decided I was really tired from my first full day back at work after 10 days off. I need to get the salt off it, and I need to get a few supplies, so maybe tonight will be the day. I am pretty sure today I will do it — it’s bit warmer, and I need groceries. Plus I need to return cans. ♻ Need my nickles back, my truck free of empties, plus get gas ⛽ before prices go up next week with the gas tax holiday ending.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 23 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 16th. South wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2021, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mist by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1933.

Mild but still kind of wet for the NYE. ☔ New Years Eve a chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 46. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New Years Day will have rain showers about, 49 degrees with maybe a few breaks of sun come late in the afternoon. Darn, still doesn’t look good for getting out of town. 🏕 Typical average high for the weekend is 34 degrees.

December 26, 2022 Morning

Good morning! Happy Boxing Day. 📦 Probably a really day for having a big bonfire 🔥 with all that Christmas 🤶 packaging and wrappers. Stuff burns well.

Partly sunny and 21 degrees at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. ☀ Calm wind. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at Wednesday around 11 am. 🌡️

After a rather cold past few days, things have warmed up nicely. The sun is shining and no wind. I’m out walking 🚶 back home from Five Rivers Environmental Education Center and the big loop over Meads Lane 🐮 and the Fisher Trail. Ice ❄ on the sidewalks is less bad today with the sun over the past few days but I wish the town would salt more. Wore the micro spikes at Five Rivers but they aren’t fun on asphalt.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 28 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees below normal. South wind 3 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1895. 13.9 inches of snow fell back in 1969.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:57 am with sun having an altitude of 24° from the due south horizon (-46.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer.

Once I get home going to take a quick shower 🚿 and get ready to head out to the folks house 🏡 for a family 👪 Christmas Party 🎅 with my parents, sister and niece.

The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:43 pm with the sun in the southwest (230°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:29 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 5:00 pm, which is 39 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the south-southwest (206°) at an altitude of 24° from the horizon, 227,153 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:36 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 26 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, an increase of 18 seconds over yesterday.

This afternoon going to hike Bennett Hill 🗻 and then head home and maybe work on free code camp and the blog. 📝 Probably just a quiet 🤫 evening as I think about the upcoming work week after my week off.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 16 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around January 11th. Maximum wind chill around 17 at 6pm; South wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2021, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1914.

Still looks rainy but mild for New Years Eve. 🎇 ☔ A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 49. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 34 degrees.

Corridor H

Driving along Corridor “H” the new limited access highway that runs in the Northern Tier of West Virginia from Davis to Morehead past the strip mined coal fields and the big Storm Mountain Coal-fired Power Plant, I was thinking what a truly nasty way to be making electricity, especially in the 21st century, when much cleaner fuels have long been on the market, and when renewables are a growing part of the electricity industry.

Coal Strip Mine Along Corridor H

In the early days of the industrial revolution, coal was the only on-demand source of energy that could be used virtually everywhere. You haul coal somewhere, you get coal lit on fire, it burns hot, often with a thick black smoke, boils water into steam which turns a turbine. More advanced controls were invented which got more heat energy turned into steam, captured more of the soot and chemical byproducts of coal, and generally made coal a better fuel. But from a chemical standpoint, coal can not compete with oil or natural gas, which is much easier to burn and control the output of the furnace. As oil and gas have fewer contaminates it can be burned with much fewer pollution controls. Mount Storm is a large coal-fired generating station. It has what appears to be two active units from the two large currently operating smoke stacks, but there may be multiple units attached to one stack. It produces an enormous cloud of water vapor visible from miles around — including from the Dolly Sods Wilderness and most elevated locations within 30 miles. Water vapor is a nice way to put it — the smoke is mostly carbon dioxide and water but it’s mixed with a wide variety of heavy metals, mercury, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxides. Things that limit the amount of otherwise healthy fish they can safely consume out of streams even far away. It produces a steady output of “base-load” that lights wells over a million households, or a combination of households, factories, and commercial facilities. It’s one of the bigger power plants out there, but certainly not the biggest.

Mount Storm

Mount Storm a big industrial facility with a large cooling reservoir whose warm waters are popular for boating and fishing. The warm cooling water from the plant keeps the lake ice free for much of the year and provides good stable water temperature for fishing. It’s nice that they allow public access to the reservoir, one with impressive views of the plant from the boat launch. That’s great. But what’s no so great is the large open pit mines that surrounded the plant, laid bare for all to see by the construction of the Corridor H Expressway. Mountain top removal, and strip mining turn mountains into mounds that look like garbage dumps. Even “restored” landscapes make mountain look engineered, the hopes of getting new businesses in the area to locate in this remote area are slim — although somewhat improved by Corridor H. For every four tons of coal hauled to the plant, one tons of coal, limestone scrubber residue, and fly ash are landfilled near the plant. The coal fired plant itself is a small part of the landscape compared to the wastes that are disposed of at on-site landfills. You can only see some of the outer walls of the landfills from the WV 94 (the old road) and Corridor H. From satellite pictures you can see much more. Burning coal cuts enormous sections out of mountains, and creates new mountains of ash landfills.

 Coal Mine

Coal haters, myself included, will note that nothing is really clean about coal. Toxic coal air emissions, while a small part of what goes up the smoke stack, are enormous, because so much coal is burned every day, 365 days a year at Mount Storm and thousands of other coal fired plants across the country. The electricity produced lights millions of homes. Not only is mining ugly and restored landscapes are often just a glimmer of the once wild lands, cutting into the earth, especially in places where coal is common, release many toxic compounds.  Coal often is mixed with pyrite, commonly known as fools gold. You might get rich off the coal, but your still a fool. Pyrite when it’s exposed to water and rain releases it’s sulfuric compounds, the same ones that often go up the stack when coal is burned. The sulfuric compounds in pyrite mixed with water produce sulfuric acid mine discharge — sometimes as powerful as car battery acid and poison streams, especially hitting fish who are sensitive to even minor changes to pH levels in stream levels. To say nothing of the removed an rerouted streams, which bring sediment downstream, boost nutrient levels, and otherwise wreck formerly good trout streams. Of course if you read my blog, you probably are aware of all these things. That coal is a lot more evil then just the excess amounts of carbon dioxide it’s bleaching into air forever changing both our local and global climates, acidifying the oceans and lakes, changing the natural rhythms of moth earth. But seeing Mount Storm up close seemed to bring that all back home to me.

Mount Storm Lake

Now I also saw the nice rural houses in the neighborhoods, with the neatly maintained yards, beautiful 3/4 ton pickup trucks, a four wheeler or two, and maybe a horse, and a family cow or a hog. All most certainly paid by the good salaries for the engineers and technical people who use their advanced knowledge to keep Mount Storm humming along. Or they work with heavy equipment in the strip mines and below ground mines to feed the ever hungry coal furnaces at Mount Storm. They are doing what they need to do to feed their family and live the good life. I respect them, I might be even kind of jealous because I’d love to live in rural God’s country like this. West Virginia is a special place. Coal may be dirty and working with it may have life-long consequences, it’s a good source of jobs in these towns that don’t have much else to do — sure there are jobs in timber, road construction, local government, a few other industries, but the area is still incredibly rural, even if Corridor H is making it easier to get around. If Virginia finally agrees to extend Corridor H so it meets up with Interstate 81, this area will become even less remote. But even without the final extension, this superhighway — granted one that has grade intersections is making the whole area much better connected together and accessible. I can’t overstate how much Corridor H changes life in the Northern Tier of West Virginia, compared to the much inferior West Virigina 93.

I think it’s fully reasonable to predict that Corridor H will eventually become an interstate highway, connecting with Interstate 81 heading west from Davis to Interstate 79 outside of Morganstown. Mount Storm will probably eventually close. President Donald Trump may say coal will be great again, but it’s a dying, nasty technology, that is long in the tooth, especially as renewables grow on the grid. Probably many of younger generation will move away, rather then struggle with the hard life of Rural Appalachia. Some people will stay and carry on the values, working in other industries or being part of the growing renewable energy industry. As Mount Storm and the coal industry is in it’s twilight years, making as much of a mess as usual, more and more wind turbines are going up on the remote ridges of the pan handle of West Virginia. Areas mined for coal might still be high enough to site new turbines — to say nothing of solar. People will still hunt deer and bear, raise a hog or beef in their backyard, live the good rural life. Mount Storm and the coal industry may be on it’s last horrific breath, but it doesn’t mean Appalachia and it’s beautiful landscape must come to an end.

 Expressway

Despite all the blasting, the large bridges, and forever changed landscape, I think Corridor H is great. It shows the beauty and ugliness of West Virginia. It will move the whole area forward, make it less remote, and allow it to transition to the industry of tomorrow. The sheer distance from other population centers will limit high-end residential and commercial development, to say nothing of the steep mountains slopes, the rough rocky terrain, even if the distances aren’t as far thanks to the safe, modern road. I think everybody should drive Corridor H at least once.

A couple of weeks ago I hiked up Goodnow Mountain, on a beautiful clear afternoon, that by the time I reached the mountain it started to cloud up and the humidity started to increase. I had previously in the morning attempted to hike up Giant Mountain in the High Peaks, and wanted to do something easier for the afternoon.

Goodnow Mountain is located at the SUNY ESF (Environmental Science-Forestry) College, just south of the Adirondack High Peaks on NY 28, just to the west of Newcomb. It’s a bit of a drive from the Adirondack Northway from the east or even a little ways from Long Lake to the west, but well worth it for the views.

 Trailhead Sign

About a quarter mile up the trail you pass an interesting tree grown over a rock. This is not as uncommon as you might think in the Adirondacks where the soils are poor and the ground is rocky, and trees seek to put down more roots to pick up nuetrants.

Tree Grown Over Rock

At about 1/2 mile you reach the old woods road that at one time, decades ago, provide vehicular access to the tower for forest rangers. Part of the trail is flat, but then it keeps steeper and erosion is noticable on the old road bed, no longer passable by anything then ATV in an emergency.

Trail Follows Old Woods Road

Rougher Part of the Trail

Further up the mountain, the trail follows a series of boardwalks that keeps most of the trail out of the mud and the muck.

Then you reach an old abandoned barn, a well, and some interesting old debris like what appears to be a tank from a hot water heater storage unit.

You ascend a ledge, with some limited views to the south.

Then their is a thick planation of White Pines along the trail as you make one relatively short ascent to the firetower.

Thick White Pines

Eventually at the last possible moment, you break through the White Pines to see the Goodnow Firetower, and almost instantly want to start climbing it for the views, unless your suffering from heat exhaustion, then you might want to look for the relatively limited shaded but open sections on the mountain.

SUNY ESF has restored to the Ranger’s cabin, and the porch is a farely popular place to sit, enjoy the view, beat the heat for a few moments.

There are many interesting views from the firetower. Here are the High Peaks looking North, the Vanderwhacker Wild Forest to the east, Kempshall Mountain / Long Lake to the west, and Blue Mountain / Blue Ridge to the South.
