July 6, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 67 degrees in Stratton, VT. There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 57 degrees. With that breeze it feels a bit cold at times, especially with the breeze, and laying back in the hammock.

It was a pretty nice day up in Vermont, lots of sun ☀ and not too hot. Battery bank and laptop got close to fully charged despite using the laptop for about half the day for finishing up a report and what seemed like an endless Zoom meeting. 📹 I just had this fear that my internet connection was going to drop during the meeting or the cellular internet connection would have problems but it all worked out fine.

No fire 🔥 tonight, instead I had a late dinner after my hour and half stroll down to Shep Meadow.

While Forest Road 71 is a nice walk with scenic curves and gentle grades, I don’t think I realized how long some of those grades were until I walked them. 🚶

I also spent an hour rereading part of the Cabin Porn book 📙 I got out of the library, studying the pictures more carefully of the various cabins and alternative living arrangements. 🏡 As much as I like camping I hope some day – maybe in a decade – I’ll have a simple place out in the country I’ll call home. 🐐 🐔 I have to say that the lantern 🏮 is burning bright 🔆 these days which is good for reading 📖 and the tent 🎪 was quite bug free. 🐜

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 60 degrees at 3am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around July 2nd. Maximum dew point of 59 at 11pm. South wind 3 to 8 mph. Honestly with the clear skies, I could see it getting even colder. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1979.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous 🌖 Moon with 95% illuminated. The moon will rise at 10:06 pm. The darkest hour is at 12:57 am, followed by dawn at 4:45 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:20 am in the east-northeast (57°) and last for 3 minutes and 27 seconds. Sunrise is 40 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 6:03 am with sun in the east-northeast (65°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 46 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 2 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers between noon and 2pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 74 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 2nd. Maximum dew point of 61 at 3pm. South wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1988.

It doesn’t seem like its going to be as hot tomorrow as I thought it would be at least up north here. 🗻 But I still think I need to head to West Wardsboro after work to get ice. And maybe a quick swing by Grout Pond to swim 🏊 and get cleaned off. Then I should be good until Thursday or Friday depending on how the ice holds up with the heat. I don’t think it will be nearly as warm here especially as I’m on a bit of a ledge with a good breeze and a fair bit of shade. 🍃 I don’t expect the weather to be amazing but I’m sure it will be better than at home.

In four weeks on August 3 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (295°) at 8:10 pm,🌄 which is 23 minutes and 10 seconds earlier then tonight. Days by then will be getting noticeably shorter, with the sun much closer to the west. In 2019 on that day, we had thunderstorm and temperatures between 85 and 66 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 61 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1975.

Well I think I’m going to wash up and head to bed. 😴 I often stay up too late when camping and my sleep suffers as the sun rises early this time of year, although this campsite is nestled in the mountains so the actual sunrise 🌅 is later here then the official time would suggest.

July 6, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Back to work after the long weekend. That said, Friday was ugly with the humidity and those bad downpours. Mostly sunny and 63 degrees at the Green Mountain National Forest. There is a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 59 degrees.

The campsite I’m at has lots of shade so it should be cool. ☀ Where I am parked 🅿 I should have sufficient sun midday to top off the battery bank but only time will tell. 🔋 Going to be a hot day today but nothing like later in the week.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 25th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 8am. North wind around 5 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 92 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1886.

So I’m continuing to work on the report I’m doing for work today after I clock in at nine. ⌚ Then I have a two o’clock meeting over the Zoom. I’m not planning on leaving camp today – tomorrow I’ll probably go to West Wardsboro for ice ❄ and maybe a swim 🏊 in Grout Pond. The creek – headwaters of the Deerfield River – quarter mile behind the camp is too small and dry for much cooling off.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.6° from the due south horizon (-0.8° vs. 6/21). Already dropping lower in the sky from the first day of summer but that may also have to do with I’m a bit farther north then Delmar. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:52 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (303°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:34 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 27 seconds with dusk around 9:08 pm, which is 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:54 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 60 degrees. There will be a east breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and one second over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 58 degrees at 4am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 21st. Maximum dew point of 60 at 8pm. South wind around 6 mph. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1979.

On this day in 1947, The AK-47 goes into production in the Soviet Union. 🔫 Even after almost seven decades, the model and its variants remain the most popular and widely used assault rifles in the world because of their substantial reliability under harsh conditions, low production costs compared to contemporary Western weapons, availability in virtually every geographic region and ease of use. Maybe when I own land, can build my own shooting range out back in a free state I’ll own a non New York legal AR-15. I bet they’re a shit ton of fun to shoot, far more fun than my 22 with its various clips. 💥Plus they might be good for ventilating my trash burning barrels 🔥 or shooting coyotes. 🐺

Hot and super muggy come the weekend. 😰 Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 70 at 12pm. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 68 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

It’s possible I stay through the weekend, ☀ but I have no real plans beyond today. It depends on how well the solar and internet works today, how well work goes and how difficult it is to keep food cold. I don’t want to have to keep running to the store to get ice, get real sweaty and not be near water 💦 to wash off or otherwise deal with the heat. It’s not like I’m on vacation in the Finger Lakes where each day I can eight hours a day at the swimming pool.

July 3, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Holiday before Independence Day! 🎇 Friday before July 4th. Cloudy, muggy and 74 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 67 degrees. The skies will clear around 8 pm.

I considered heading out of town this weekend ⛺ but I decided to avoid the crowds, especially with the developed campgrounds closed or at least not taking new reservations. Instead I’m thinking about heading out to Vermont on Sunday when campsites are opening up there and working remotely this week from camp. I know some good places where I have cell service and can get good sunshine ☀ for the solar.

I have a double checked and Albany County remains on the exempt list 📃 for Coronavirus quarantine in Vermont as its levels are below the state averages. 👾 So I am good on that front although I doubt I’ll run into many people in Vermont except maybe to get ice next week. Not sure if that will be true after July 10th with the recent uptick in the news 📰 but as I’m good for going this week.

Today will have isolated showers, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 81 degrees at 12pm. East

June 25, 2020 Evening

Good evening! Heavy rain and 73 degrees at the Jones Pond. ☔ Glad I’m tired 😴 and decided to bail for the truck early. It’s wet! There is a west-southwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃 with gusts up to 24 mph 💨💨💨. The dew point is 45 degrees. The skies will clear around 5 pm.

Just a rain storm 💦 but quite wet for now. I’m not sure if good because of all the weather warnings ⚠ of how dry it is. That said, this week has had a lot of showers and Saturday could be quite wet.

Today I stopped by Bog River Falls then spent some time at the Tupper Lake Library. 💻 Been a pretty quiet time at work but I’ve been working on coming up with polling regions for one of my clients. Spent a little time at Tupper Lake Park and then bought a few very expensive groceries at the independent in Tupper Lake.

I forgot to get gas and ended up driving 🚘 through Saranac Lake on the way up to camp. It probably was about the same amount of time as going through pokey Fish Creek Ponds. Pretty drive between Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake, I didn’t realize how much of a drop its down to Saranac Lake. The village of Saranac Lake reminds me of a bit of Galenton, PA with the mountains and the ponds but much bigger and less hillbilly.

Occasionally I’ve been hearing a clinking noise when I turn my steering wheel 🚙 which is bothering me to no end after spending all that money on the front end of the truck. 💵 If something else is wearing out I would have hoped the shop would have pointed it out and asked me if I wanted it fixed. Maybe it’s nothing, there is nothing I can do about it for now, but it’s still annoying. It’s not effecting drivablity and it’s still happening only rarely. At times I get overly sensitive about auto noises.

Jones Pond is nice but they’ve reduced it to two drive in campsites ⛺ – the site I really like and the one in the boat launch parking area 🅿. You can guess which one I am at tonight. It’s fine though, only two nights here ✌ and it’s still on the lake and it’s close to the road so no rough roads to drive and quick to leave come Saturday when I head home. 🏡 Plus I have decent cell service for work. 📱

Tonight will have a 20 percent chance of showers before 9pm. Partly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 5th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 10pm. Southwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 61 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1979.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 23% illuminated. At 5 PM, the moon was in the south (178°) at an altitude of 61° from the horizon, some 229,463 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by December 16th. Buckle up for safety! 💺 The Buck 🦌 Moon is on Sunday, July 5. The darkest hour is at 1:01 am, followed by dawn at 4:40 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:16 am in the northeast (56°) and last for 3 minutes and 37 seconds. Sunrise is 22 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 6:01 am with sun in the east-northeast (63°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 30 minutes of darkness, an increase of 21 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 78 degrees at 5pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 16th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 8am. Southwest wind 8 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had rain in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 87 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1952.

In four weeks on July 23 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (299°) at 8:32 pm,🌄 which is 13 minutes and 39 seconds earlier then today. In 2019 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 79 and 65 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 83 and 62 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1955.

Looking ahead,

Before the rain comes this evening check out the tons of woods lilies. The flowers won't likely survive the rain.

June 23, 2020 Night

Good evening! Overcast and 75 degrees at Horseshoe Lake. ⛅ There is a south-southwest breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 64 degrees.

This is primary night in the era of social distancing. ❎ While certainly not my only election night bonfire, well more like a small campfire, 🔥 it was interesting watching the results come in eventhough things will change when the absentees come in – 1.7 million state wide due to the pandemic. But less than you might think as absentee ballots are similar in patterns then in person voting. I’ve been doing this long enough to know all the websites to check.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely before 2am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 2am and 5am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5am. Mostly cloudy ☔, with a low of 64 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 8pm. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Tomorrow will have a 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 9am. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing 🌦, with a high of 73 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 30th. Maximum dew point of 62 at 6am. Southwest wind 9 to 14 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1943.

I am going to stay up at Horseshoe Lake for one more night after tonight 🌃 and then take down camp early Thursday morning and work down at Long Lake on Thursday, so a short hike after work and head home, getting home 🏡 around 9 pm. I could go to another campsite but I think Saturday is going to be quite rainy ☔.

Looking ahead, there are 19 weeks until Election Day 2020 🗳️ when the sun will be setting at 4:44 pm with dusk at 5:14 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 53 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 53 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1990.

 One More Sunset

June 22, 2020 Night

Good evening! Hot and humid night and 77 degrees at the Horseshoe Lake. Light breeze The dew point is 64 degrees.

Kind of muggy when the breeze dies down 🍃 but truth be told when the wind picks up its quite pleasant. It wasn’t as long of a day as expected but fairly busy. Laptop worked well, kept it charged 🔋 but I had to move the truck a few times to keep it in the sun for solar power. That said this campsite was quite nice and cool and shady. Plus close to the lake for water or cooling down. Had a few rumbles of thunder ⚡ to the east but nothing nearby.

Tonight will have isolatdd showers and thunderstorms before 11pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Patchy dense fog after 2am. Otherwise, partly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 63 degrees at 5am. Buckle up for safety! 💺 The moon will set in the borthwest (304°) at 10:16 pm. The Buck 🦌 Moon is on Saturday, July 4. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1888.

Tomorrow is Primary Day ❎ and it should be a nice day but busy. Wednesday I might work from Long Lake – they have a lot of internet access hotspots around the village. 📶

In four weeks on July 20 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (300°) at 8:34 pm,🌄 which is 10 minutes and 33 seconds earlier then tonight. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1991.

June 22, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Average High is 80 🏖! Sunny and 73 degrees at the Horseshoe Lake. 🌞 There is a south-southwest breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 63 degrees. A very pleasant morning up but muggy here like everywhere else.

It’s a Monday and it’s back to work remotely 💻, using the laptop and my phone 📱. The nice thing about the internet is nobody knows if you are a dog 🐶 or are hiding out in St. Lawrence County unless of course you post about it.

Been years since I’ve been in the North Country, 🌲🌲🌲 I forgot how wild and beautiful the land is north of Blue Mountain Lake 😍 and how many deer, turkey and other wildlife you see on the road at six o’clock on a Monday. With the fog lifting 🌁 it was an incredible beautiful morning. I should get up early more now that the sun is rising so early. It won’t be that long until sunrise 🌅 is closer to 7:30 am rather then 5:30 am.

Why did I decide to wake up so early and head north? 🌲🌲🌲Partially because I could but also I had some concerns about staying at that campsite 14 another night at Jessup River Road. I’m tired of it and that area, I’ve been there too much lately. Plus while that site has oodles of solar power it would have been ungodly hot under the sun ☀. And I was itching for something different. I knew I would have pretty good cell phone reception 📶 on Horseshoe Lake so I could easily work here and most of the campsites are close to the lake. I’m hoping to do a little paddling after work 🚣 and maybe some fishing 🎣 but it depends on the weather and how late I have to work. 📝

Today will have a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 88 degrees at 4pm. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 8am. Southwest wind around 6 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1954.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.2° from the due south horizon (0° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 8:02 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (297°). 📸 The sunset is in the borthwest (305°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:46 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 36 seconds with dusk around 9:22 pm, which is 10 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the west-northwest (296°) at an altitude of 8° from the horizon, 236,519 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 10:11 pm. At sunset, look out for thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 75 degrees. The dew point will be 63 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 31 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 5 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 7pm. Patchy dense fog after 1am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy , with a low of 65 degrees at 5am. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 65 at 9pm. South wind 3 to 5 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1940.

Cooler with showers for the weekend. 💦 Saturday, a 40 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 75. West wind 6 to 11 mph. Maximum dew point of 57 at 8pm. Sunday, a 50 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 81. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the morning. Maximum dew point of 60 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

I could keep going north and seeing more of the Adirondacks or I could head home 🏡 before or after work. 📝 You know I don’t know. I’m watching the weather to see when the heat wave down in Albany will break before making any decisions.
