May 20, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 66 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌟 There is a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 51 degrees.

A week from now Memorial Day Weekend 2019 will be mostly over and then it will be the unofficial start to summer. 😎 I’m sitting out back watching the fake lightening bugs from the laser light, which is pretty but it’s fairly cool with the wind. Earlier in the day it was quite humid but now the dew point has dropped. I went for my evening πŸŒƒ walk a despite feeling a bit achy again.

Today was another busy day at work, πŸ’Ό which didn’t help that I went to the Haitian Day at the LOB and managed to spill food on my jacket and pants. Fortunately, I wasn’t wearing my good jacket. I’m going to have to drop it off at the dry cleaner. Not tomorrow though as I have to vote ❎ in the school 🚸 election and I don’t want to leave my truck at the Park and Ride as it’s Brewers Association night at the LOB and it would be nice to have a few drinks 🍻 and not have to drive at all.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌀, with a low of 50 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 24th. Northwest wind 11 to 13 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 47 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1949.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon πŸŒ– with 88% illuminated. The moon will set at 7:40 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Saturday night with a partly cloudy then slight chance of rain skies. The Strawberry Moon 🌝 is on Sunday, June 16th. The sun will rise at 5:27 am with the first light at 4:54 am, which is 52 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 10 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 50 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 65 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 2nd. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1941. There was a dusting of snow in 1895.❄

Still not totally sure where I will go but it would be nice to get away for the long weekend that might be quite rain free for a change.

May 19, 2019 11 PM Update

Good evening! Mostly cloudy with some lightening to the south 🌩 and 71 degrees in Dormansville, NY. ☁ I guess folks like to call it heat lightening but it’s really just a distant thunderstorm to the south. There is a south breeze at 9 mph. πŸƒ. The wind had really dropped down after dark. The dew point is 62 degrees. Humid but not that bad. The skies will clear tomorrow around 7 am. A little after sunrise.

I was surprised that by afternoon it got fairly nice. β˜€ Breezy though for sure, my parents didn’t want to eat outside. We had a quick thunderstorm ⚑ roll through and I had to run out and close the windows on the truck.

On the VMS display in my bedroom, I added a DHT 11 humidity sensor to monitor the humidity and dew point in my bedroom. πŸ‘ΉIt will be interesting to see how humid it gets in my bedroom on a sticky warm evening. I also added a transistor to reset the display ever so often to avoid display glitches which seem to be a bigger problem in the warm weather. After each message the display goes into sleep mode and a transistor fully cuts power to clear out any invalid data. So far its workng well. Still plan to add an outside temperature probe but I have to study the internet to figure out how to use it and figure the best way to get the wiring out of the window.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 66 degrees at 5am. 18 degrees above normal. That’s actually warmer than many summer nights in July. Maximum dew point of 63 at 5am. South wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 56 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 2002.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon πŸŒ– with 94% illuminated. The moon will set at 6:55 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Saturday night with partly cloudy skies. The sun will rise at 5:29 am with the first light at 4:56 am, which is 53 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 13 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 52 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. Partly sunny 🌧, with a high of 82 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around July 2nd. Maximum dew point of 63 at 6am. Warm but not super muggy. Southwest wind 7 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 75 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1962.

Right now, a split verdict on the Memorial Day Weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 59 at 2pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 55 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 72 degrees. All and all it seems like a nice weekend but Saturday might not be the sunest and the weather will not be super warm. I’m still chewing over where to go – if I camped β›Ί in a local state forests it might not be as buggy as up north and I wouldn’t have to deal with expressway traffic.

 Wet Trees

May 18, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 61 degrees ☁ in Delmar. Calm wind. The dew point is 45 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 9 am.

It was a nice day, the Lupine Festival went well and I followed it up with a couple miles walking 🚢 around Blueberry Hill. Not a lot of lupine in bloom now but some is starting and I think I saw a couple of Karner Blue Butterflies on my walk but they are sure tiny, fast moving and hard to capture on the camera. πŸ“·

Yes, I had a lot of fun with the crayons ✏and coloring our coloring book. I really like coloring. Maybe it’s a kid thing but it’s a fun way to pass the time. I’m actually thinking about getting some colored pencils and printing out some pictures, maybe using the trace edges function in Inkscape and playing with coloring like up at camp. It could be very therapeutic. Might be fun with nature study, another activity I really enjoy but not in black fly season.

The Pine Bush is such an asset to Albany 🌲that so many people overlook. A wilderness in a city. It is a bit noisy in parts though due to the traffic. They are really doing a good job of maintaining the beautiful unique ecosystem – they are burning πŸ”₯ 250 acres a year with a hope of getting closer to 500 acres although it’d tough to get favorable enough conditions and days when they can control the smoke from the burn. That’s a lot of acreage for sure. I don’t know about how they do it in the preserve but it’s fascinating to watch videos πŸ“Ή of farmers and ranchers burn pastures out west. Fire is a powerful tool when used respectfully.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 4am, then a slight chance of showers after 5am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 52 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 30th. Maximum dew point of 47 at 6am. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1981.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly after noon. Partly sunny 🌦, with a high of 78 degrees at 3pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 14th. I’ll take some June weather. Best weather of the day tomorrow is expected in the morning. A touch of humidity tomorrow too. Maximum dew point of 62 at 5pm. South wind 13 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 58 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1989. There was a dusting of snow in 1976.❄

I got two more HC-05 Bluetooth modules in the mail from China today. βœ‰ They came so quickly. Hopefully I can get these to talk together properly. I’ll use the current ones for other projects like the smart solar panel charge relay I want to build for my truck eventually. It would be nice to check the voltage of my batteries right from my phone. πŸ”‹ Hopefully I’ll find some time to work on those projects in the near future.

Speaking of batteries, I brought my extra battery and swapped it in my phone which kept it going all day strong πŸ’ͺ. I’m thinking of getting one of those battery banks to use while wilderness camping but just swapping out the battery in my phone is a nice lightweight alternative. πŸ“±

The long range for Memorial Day Weekend looks to be fairly sunny β˜€ with temperatures that are seasonable. A few chances for rain but generally the forecast for next weekend is quite positive but not real warm. But that’s to be expected in late May. Remember, the weather in late May is closest to mid September in Albany. 🌸

In four weeks on June 15 the sun will be setting at 8:35 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 20 minutes and 54 seconds later then tonight. Bought some groceries and supplies, went for my walk 🚢 then sat out back with the laptop for a while working on some school 🚸 budget maps. I did forget to buy a big bottle of dandruff shampoo, the last one I bought lasted nearly a year. It’s a very big bottle and quite affordable to boot. Less plastic waste. β™»

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 48 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Northwest wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 51 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1981. Farm Up on Cole Hill

May 16, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 62 degrees Calm wind.πŸŽ‘ The dew point is 41 degrees. A fairly nice spring evening but the air is a bit pungent with manure with the farm down the road spreading. πŸ’©Been tough on anyone that does field work this spring. It’s just been so wet, in most of the country. πŸ’¦ Rain again om Friday and probably Sunday too. Go figure.

I was quite concerned about delays getting home with the Corporation Challenge Run. πŸƒ It was a beautiful day for the run for sure, but often it messed up the buses a lot. But this year, the express bus was only about 10 or 15 minutes late, and I was home by six, so not a big deal.🚌 Traffic on the outbound was lighter then expected, and all and it, it’s a very nice evening.

But tonight is nice. πŸ‘ Sitting out back with the almost full moon. I hooked up the laser firefly light show out back. Kind of pretty watching the flicker on the ground although the real thing is even better. 🐝 Been such a cold spring that I bet the real fireflies will be late this year. I hear deer in the woods, a bird chirping in the distance and lots of motor vehicles. 🏁 I live on the outskirts of the city but still close enough for transit.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 21st. Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph after midnight. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 59 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1959.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon πŸŒ” with 99% illuminated. The moon will set at 5:05 am. The πŸŒ• will be tomorrow with a chance of showers. The sun will rise at 5:31 am with the first light at 4:58 am, which is 59 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 18 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes over last night.

Tomorrow will have showers likely, mainly between 10am and 3pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 72 degrees at 5pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 23rd. Maximum dew point of 58 at 4pm. South wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light and variable. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Well, it was a nice break in the rain for a change. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 2017.

The Pine Bush display was much more ready to go then I expected this year. 🌲I did send some handouts to be made up at the copy shop. Hopefully I made up enough, it’s kind of expensive to do the copying even on lightweight paper. At least its all ordered and I can pick it up tomorrow. πŸ“‘ Then it’s the long day at the Lupine Festival but hopefully I’ll have some help. I just hate to spend money πŸ’΅ on something that’s going to be thrown away.

So much for that super nice weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 67. Northwest wind around 8 mph. Maximum dew point of 46 at 7pm. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 64 at 4pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 70 degrees.

After the Lupine Festival I’ll probably go for a walk and head home. 🚢 If Sunday doesn’t look good I’ll just stay in town, run to the store then out to my parents house. Save gas for next weekend. β›½ Not that I have super big plans for Memorial Day Weekend, at best it’s back up to the East Branch to spend a few days swatting black flies. 🐜

Definitely looking forward to warmer weather and nights in the wilderness. β›Ί I’ve already gotten two weekends in this year but there are more to come. This might be my second to last year of doing these trips if I decide to go car less in 2021, but I want to wait and see what tomorrow brings. I like traveling but I hate the scams, awful people on the automobile industry. I could save so much money by going car lees for a few years and reduce my carbon footprint πŸ‘£ enormously.

In four weeks on June 13 the sun will be setting at 8:34 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 22 minutes and 6 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 75 and 60 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 77 and 56 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1892.

I still can’t believe what an idiot Trump 🎺 is with his tarrifs. In the mid term the presidents actions are eventually going to be be so bad for the economy. πŸ“‰ We should be building bonds with other countries, tearing down trade barriers and walls, bringing the globe together not splitting it apart. 🌐 Ignoring our global problems aren’t going to make them go away.

Looking ahead, Fathers Day πŸ‘¨ is a month away, Summer ️⛱️ is in 5 weeks, Independence Day πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ is in 7 weeks, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM πŸŒ† is in 2 months, August 🌻 is in 11 weeks and Last Sunset After 7 PM πŸŒ† is in 20 weeks.

Reflections

May 15, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 54 degrees ☁ in Delmarcation. 🌊 Calm wind. The dew point is 45 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 9 am.

I went to the Pine Bush dinner and it was an interesting presentation.Β  🏚 The Dunn Landfill is really bad news πŸ“° for Rennselear, especially the 200 trucks a day that rumble through the streets, starting in a big line at 6:30 AM every morning. It’s unfortunate that we live in a throw away everything society that when they demolish homes today, everything from the kitchen appliances to the old wood and brick go into the landfill.πŸ—‘ Also George Keleshian’s presentation on so-called zero-energy, efficient buildings was interesting — he stressed conservation over generation of electricity, which was a refreshing change.

I have the Save the Pine Bush booth and will get that ready tomorrow. 🎨 I also should probably think about running to the store as I’m very low on groceries. 🍲 It looks like the display is in fairly good shape, but I want to make some more pictures up and run off some of the “coloring” book we are going to have for the kids there.πŸ– Looks like nice weather for the Lupine Festival on Saturday.πŸ¦‹

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly before midnight. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 50 degrees at 3am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 24th. Light west wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 51 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1980.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon πŸŒ” with 96% illuminated. The moon will set at 4:35 am. The Flower Moon πŸŒ• is on Friday night. The sun will rise at 5:32 am with the first light at 5:00 am, which is one minute and one second earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 20 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 2 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 65 degrees at 4pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 2nd. May weather is nice for a change. Maximum dew point of 47 at 8am. Northwest wind around 8 mph. Another fairly nice day. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1991.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 67. Maximum dew point of 46 at 7am. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 71. Maximum dew point of 47 at 2pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 70 degrees. Certainly if this wasn’t lupine festival week I’d be heading out of town. 🐸 Sunday I think I’ll probably do a local hike although I’ll consider going down to West Saugerties and hiking Platte Clove. πŸ€ Some models now though are talking about more clouds and rain for Sunday.🌦 Somehow, I’m inclined to believe them.

In four weeks on June 12 the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 22 minutes and 40 seconds later then tonight. South Mountain Ridge

May 14, 2019 Night

Good evening! No need to repeat the weather conditions except to say I needed my umbrella on the way home and it’s around 43 degrees β˜” There is a northwest breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. Rain and more rain. At least I work indoors but it doesn’t make the weather any less depressing. πŸ˜” The Youtube farm channels I follow show a lot of muddy livestock, and farmers frustrated that they can’t get out in the fields.

Very busy day today at work, πŸ’Ό I got home around 8:45 after taking the 8:15 home. Hopefully in five weeks when the legislative session wraps down it won’t be so crazy at work and I’ll be able to get home by 5:45 most nights and then I can go to the park with a book.πŸ“” Between work and the wet, rainy nights, I’ve only been out once night so far this year reading. But it’s also been a particularly crazy year this year at work.😫

I made up some pasta with tuna fish and mayo. 🐠 Simple, easy inexpensive meal. I also don’t have a lot of choices at home right now for food although fortunately tomorrow is the Pine Bush Dinner. 🌲Been so busy I kind of totally forgot about it all. I got to work on the Pine Bush display for Saturday on Thursday night. I am really running low on veggies at home,πŸŒ½πŸ…Β I guess I could open up some canned stuff. πŸ₯«

Tonight will rain before midnight, then a chance of showers, mainly between midnight and 2am. Patchy fog between 4am and 5am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 38 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 18th. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It became sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 56 degrees. The record low of 31 occurred back in 1977.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon πŸŒ” with 90% illuminated. The moon will set at 4:05 am. The Flower 🌸 Moon πŸŒ• is on Friday night wait for it…..scattered showers. The sun will rise at 5:33 am with the first light at 5:01 am, which is one minute and 2 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 22 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 4 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 63 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 27th. Northwest wind 5 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Despite the sun, it will feel cold. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 77 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1900.

I have to think things are going to end badly with Trump’s tariffs 🌎but only time will tell. I feel like a recession might be better for me in the short term and maybe for the country as a whole as it leads people to be more cautious and makes buying into the markets more affordable. That said the Trump supporters are not wrong when they say the tarrifs are a relatively small tax compared to the many others out there, the economy is very healthy and inflation is very low. πŸ’£ I’m ready to see what happens as it may lead to a lot of re thinking about economics.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of Trump and I think a lot of his thinking and policies don’t correspond with reality. πŸ’ That said I’m hardly enthusiastic about the national democrats and if anything I’m looking at third party candidates for president. I voted for Bernie in the primary in 2016 but I’d hardly call myself an enthusiastic supporter of him and less so in 2020. I do like Trump’s first appointment to the Supreme Court and his tax cut but at least I wish he would acknowledge that climate change is problematic and getting worse and that we should be an international leader not a bully.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 67. Maximum dew point of 46 at 6am. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 53 at 2pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 70 degrees.

Maybe Sunday I’ll have to think about doing some hiking somewhere. 🚢 Not too far from home though as Memorial Day Weekend if it’s nice πŸ˜† I plan to head north. But I know that’s unlikely. It will probably rain and be cold unless there are thousands of black flies.
