I decided to stay home tonight with the poor weather. 🚲 I rode the excerise bike for a while and I worked on building the cable for the outside temperature proper for my display in the bedroom. I also soldered some pins on a level shifter to use for another project I’m working on. If I had known how bad the weather was I would have brought my laptop home.

Hazy but the Mountains Are Sure Getting Green

May 29, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 62 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. The dew point is 56 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 1 pm. It wasn’t a half bad night for the evening walk. More stars ✨ and less clouds would be nice but at least I was feeling good enough to do my quarter mile walk.

For the most part today I was feeling better, not as stiff and sore as Monday and Tuesday. πŸ’ͺ I mean I was never that bad – I walked down to library yesterday and today walked around the Capitol and LOB with no issues. But at times, especially when I got back to my truck after doing the Stratton Loop I struggled to climb into it. At least I’m a lot better off than those people on RadioLab this week dealing with the opiod problems.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 15th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 9pm. Light south wind. Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 3rd. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6pm. West wind 3 to 6 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1987.

I will pick my jackets up from the dry cleaning tomorrow. πŸ‘”Then I should be good for the rest of the legislative session. Probably then take the express bus in if I can get an early enough start. After work I may see if I can exchange the hammock, and get a battery box and battery πŸ”‹ for the truck. I’d like to get that hooked up early on Saturday so I can get out and enjoy the weather the rest of the weekend.

While keeping an eye on the sky for showers, the weekend is fairly decent for early June with minimal humidity. β˜€ Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 56 at 3pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 70. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 51 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 74 degrees.

Still planning to stay in town this weekend with hope that if the following weekend is nice if I go up north, the black flies will be mostly gone. β›Ί Jessup River Road remains on my short list, maybe kayak the Kunjamunk Bay and fish on Sunday in two weeks. πŸ“± I just got to make sure that I have cell service regardless of where I go for work.

Scheduled my oil change for June 10th which will work for me πŸ‘as it’s not a session day so I csn drop it off and pick up after work. I’ll just walk down and catch the 1 or the 905 to work. It’s been a long time since my last oil change but I’ve been trying to drive a lot less now. I’m sure with summer being around the corner I’ll end up driving more.

Sandy Bank of Cheney Pond

May 28, 2019 Night

Good evening! Clouds, light rain showers and 53 degrees in the area around Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a north breeze at 5 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 52 degrees. The skies will clear Friday around 4 am. I walked down to the library, and it was only drizzling a bit.

I’m not feeling that bad tonight as I was earlier πŸ˜₯but still a bit stiff and sore. But I was able to walk down to the library this evening and get some work done there for Save the Pine Bush, updated part of the blog, downloaded some videos 🎦 and returned my library books. πŸ“š I’m going to wait and see a few more days before going to the doctor 😷 watching for any bulls eyes that might pop up.

I did enjoy that book on the Tiger 🐯, the history of Tammany Hall. I had heard a lot about Tammany Hall over the years and Boss Tweed but never knew much about the institution or how it came to be or why it finally faded away by the early 1960s. It’s kind of sad to see it come to an end in the book πŸ“– although much of what the institution did was pretty corrupt and 😈.

Tonight will have a chance of showers before 1am, then a chance of rain, mainly between 1am and 3am. Patchy fog before 11pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 49 degrees at 3am. Tomorrow will have patchy fog between 7am and 8am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy 🌞, with a high of 70 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 19th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 6pm. North wind 3 to 6 mph. I know I’ll pack my umbrella tomorrow. β˜” I also need to get my jacket from the dry cleaners. I hope I have cash? πŸ’ A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1931.

The National Weather Service is still relatively optimistic for the weekend. πŸ˜• My phone is showing more clouds and rain. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Maximum dew point of 54 at 7pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 72. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 54 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 74 degrees.

My plan for this weekend is to hook up the second accessory battery in the truck πŸ”‹ and clean out and organize my truck. I want to see if they’ll stand behind the hammock at LL Bean and replace it again. I can’t believe that broke again. 😑 Maybe do some more cleaning around the apartment, maybe a local hike. 🚢 In two weeks, God willing, I’m thinking about Perkins Clearing to camp, hiking back in the West Canada Lake Wilderness and kayaking in Speculator. β›Ί

 Columbine

May 27, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 62 degrees in Dormansville, NY. There is a north breeze at 8 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. Sleeping in the truck once again tonight at my parents house. 😴 Enjoy this beautiful evening while it lasts, we might be in for a period of unstable weather once again for the week.☁ Clouds and rain tomorrow, once again.

It was a pretty decent weekend up in the Green Mountains, bar my hammock ripping into two, the black flies, and forgetting to pack extra socks. 🧦 I was sure I had the socks with me, and I started to paw through my pack on Thursday night, and I just assumed they were burred in my pack. Frustrating through. I’ve started to use a packing list before camping, but i didn’t have a printed copy of the list to check off when I started packing on Wednesday night, as Thursday was busy with the Pine Bush event.✍ So be it. The black flies weren’t truly bad until it got really sunny and nice this morning, but I had a nice drive down Forest Road 71 on this sunny morning, and I got home relatively early to unpack.πŸ’Ό

Hiking the Stratton Mountain, Stratton Pond loop sure was exhausting but well worth it in my opinion.🚢 It got my goal of doing something new and different at camp and the change was special even if the 12 or 13 mile walk caused by me missing Winhall River trail made it exhausting. I got to see some new and different trails,β›° the other side of Stratton Pond and even the summit of Stratton was enjoyable as it’s the first time I’ve hiked it in six years. Been kind of achy and sore all day today, but I’m sure in a few day I’ll be feeling better or I should go to the doctor prior to June 1st when the Health Insurance deductibles go up. 😷 We need universal healthcare, ain’t that obvious.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 23rd. North wind 5 to 8 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 53 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1994.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 with 27% illuminated. The moon will rise at 2:44 am. The New Moon is on Sunday night with scattered showers. The Strawberry Moon 🌝 is on Sunday, June 16th. The sun will rise at 5:23 am with the first light at 4:49 am, which is 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will rain likely before 11am, then periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm between 11am and 4pm, then occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4pm. 🌦 High of 58 degrees at 12pm. 15 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 15th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 4pm. πŸ–οΈ Southeast wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 74 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 2016. There was a dusting of snow in 1902.❄

Tomorrow I should pick up my dry cleaning, πŸ‘• and maybe I should think about trying to get up to LL Bean to see if they will once again exchange my broken hammock. Well, if I paid a premium for the hammock, well with my card rewards, and they have a wonderful lifetime guarantee, they should replace it, because I don’t think I did anything to kill it besides flopping in it after being tired hiking. If they don’t replace it for free (again — the carbinaner snapped on the first one I got), I’ll get another brand, because I really want to do more hammock camping. I also want get the battery box and maybe the marine battery for my second battery I plan to install in the truck, in my cap, giving me extra storage for cloudy days up at camp. Then I should be able to be 100% solar for all my camp electrical needs.

Right now, next weekend looks cool but sunny. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 51 at 6pm. Sunny and low humidity. No complaints there. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 56 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 74 degrees. Things could definitely change by then.

I plan to stay in town next weekend, although things could change my mind.πŸ€” For example, if it looked like it was going to exceptionally hot out, I might consider going up to the Potholers, but not necessarily. Instead, I have a lot of projects I’d like to work on at home, including wiring up and mounting the second accessory battery in the cap of my truck.πŸ”‹ I don’t imagine that project will take more then about an hour, but who knows. I might also have some work stuff I have to do next weekend.

But maybe the following weekend I’ll get out of town — I’m hoping by then that Jessup River Road will be open, then I might camp on Hardwood Hill then hike back on Saturday on one of the trails into the West Canada Lake Wilderness back to Pillsbury Lake from Sled Harbor and then on Sunday paddle around Speculator. πŸ• If I camp up there, I’ll have good cellphone service for any work matters that come up. Plus I love the views from the campsite — assuming the road is open for the spring, and that campsite is not taken.

In four weeks on June 24 the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 14 minutes and 33 seconds later then tonight. Latest sunset of the year or pretty darn close to it. Almost all of the time — except for 2 minutes — we gain over the next few weeks will be in the evening, as earth wobble brings the transit of the sun closer to 1 PM. In 2018 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 76 and 61 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1943.

Amazing to think in four weeks, we will be well into summer, but that’s what happens when Memorial Day Weekend comes to a close. Maybe that weekend I’ll be in Schoharie County, and can camp at Burnt Rossman after spending all day at the Mine Kill State Park pool.🏊🏿

Looking ahead, Latest Sunset πŸŒ† is in 4 weeks, July 🏊🏿 is in 5 weeks, Cow Appreciation Day πŸ‚ is in 7 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM πŸŒ† is in 11 weeks, Labor Day πŸ‘¨β€πŸ is in 14 weeks and Columbus Day πŸ›₯️ is in 19 weeks.

Another Collapsing Adirondac Village Building

May 23, 2019 Night

Good evening! There is a pretty good thunderstorm rolling through and 65 degrees in Delmar. ⚑ Not a lot of lightening here but lots of flashes to the north, some good gusts of breeze and rain. Raining hard enough to sound like a cow pissing. Breezy, ️16 mph breeze from the west-southwest 🌬 with gusts up to 28 mph πŸ’¨πŸ’¨πŸ’¨. The dew point is 58 degrees.

My truck is pretty much ready to go just the normal things to pack come morning. πŸŽ’I went grocery shopping after work and then went to the Pine Bush meeting. Camp after work tomorrow in the Greens. β›Ί It would be nice if the bosses let us leave at 3 pm tomorrow but that’s probably unlikely although today was the slowest day at work in probably two months for me. Sexual harassment training was awful but I survived it. I treat women and my colleagues with respect, although I guess it’s good to have a refresher.

The Last Quarter Moon is on Saturday night with scattered t-storms around. The Strawberry Moon 🌝 is on Sunday, June 16th. The sun will rise at 5:25 am with the first light at 4:52 am, which is 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 5 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 40 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have isolated showers after 1pm. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 70 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 19th. Should be a nice day but watch for unstable weather in the evening. Maximum dew point of 52 at 2pm. Northwest wind around 18 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1964.

It’s off to the Green Mountains πŸ—» tomorrow. Maybe Branch Pond Road, maybe closer to Grout Pond or Forest Road 73. I’m thinking about hiking to Downer Glen or maybe Lye Brook Falls or maybe I’ll just hang out at camp. β›Ί I do want to camp somewhere I have a bit of space so I don’t have to worry about making too much noise. πŸ”Š

Cooking Dinner

May 22, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 61 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south breeze at 5 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 41 degrees. The skies will clear around 10 pm. I’ve been watching the humidity meter this evening in my bedroom and it’s been creeping up. Only a few hours ago dew points where in the 30s.

I got most of my gear packed for camping this weekend. β›Ί The great debate between the Greens and the Adirondacks continue but the only difference really is if I bring worms and they my fishing 🎣 pole. If I do go to Vermont I want to camp somewhere more remote where I can listen to music without bothering the neighbors. Vermont I would probably hike down to Lye Brook Falls and maybe Stratton Mountain. Adirondacks I’d probably hike back to Simease Ponds although thats a pretty long hike. Also considering going up to Thirteenth Lake and hiking back to Hour Pond. Lots of options. Built a new hose to make it easier to fill my water tanks with less spillage from the bathroom sink. That’s good because I’ve been doing it in the kitchen since the landlord removed the tub faucet and that’s been a pain.

Tonight will be scattered showers, mainly after 3am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 2nd. The sun will rise at 5:26 am with the first light at 4:53 am, which is 48 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 45 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow I will drop off two of my jackets to get dry cleanedπŸ‘”and then I will leave my truck at the Park and Ride, picking up some groceries for camp before heading to the Save the Pine Bush meeting🎍over the Crossgates apartment complex.

Weekend continues to look decent but not perfect. πŸ˜• Saturday, a slight chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 72. In four weeks on June 19 the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 18 minutes and 17 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had hot and humid conditions, mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 83 and 64 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 79 and 58 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1995.

I made some edits to the code for my VMS display in my bedroom. πŸ“Ÿ It now pulls from both the clock chip and humidity sensor for calculating the indoor temperature for greater accuracy and uses a decimal value. It also resets the high and low temperature at midnight each day. It’s fun to monitor the indoor temperature, dewpoint and humidity, especially now with the windows open. ⬛My next step is to hook up the outside temperature sensor which mostly just requires me to figure out how to sneak the wires outside and position the sensor for an accurate estimate, especially in the winter when the windows are closed.⬜

Middle Lake 2

May 21, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 60 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 10 mph. πŸƒ.

A fairly pleasant evening, I went down to the park for a while and read πŸ“– some more about Tammany Hall and then came home and are laying in bed. I have to teach a nine o’clock class tomorrow so I need to get to bed early. I went to Brewer’s Association night for a bit but headed home early as I wanted to go to the park on this nice evening and knew that I had to up bright and early tomorrow 🍻.

Tonight will be clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 45 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 10th. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 2002.

The Last Quarter Moon is on Saturday night with a partly cloudy then slight chance of showers and mostly cloudy skies. The Strawberry Moon 🌝 is on Sunday, June 16th. I love those little Juneberries you find in the fields. Wild strawberry πŸ“ we used to call them. The sun will rise at 5:26 am with the first light at 4:53 am, which is 50 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 9 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 47 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 72 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 23rd. North wind 6 to 8 mph. Another nice spring day. Tomorrow night I should start packing up for the long weekend and I might do some shopping πŸ‘ as Thursday night I have a Save the Pine Bush event that I am going to attend after work and I want to leave for camp after work on Friday – wherever I end up going. Looks like a nice weekend.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 74. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 60 at 6pm. Sunday, a chance of showers before 8am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 59 at 7am. Typical average high for the weekend is 72 degrees.

I’m still on the fence about Vermont versus the Adirondacks. I like the quiet of Branch Pond Road and I’ve enjoyed it the past two years going up there. β›Ί But I kind of want to do something new this year. If I camp on the East Branch there will be a ton of noisy traffic but I am toying with the idea of hiking back to Simease Pond past Eleventh Mountain or maybe exploring the Oregon Trail or driving up to Thirteenth Lake and hiking back to Hour Pond. I’m not sure where I would hike if I went to Vermont. I don’t want to hike Stratton Mountain or Bourne/Stratton Pond again necessarily. I want to do something new.

That said, I’m thinking of heading to Spectator after Jessup River Road opend come early to mid June so I can camp at the campsite πŸ’ I stayed at Labor Day Weekend where I have good cell service for work and lots of sun for solar power and a great place to hang my hammock at the campsite with good views to boot – the Hartwick Hill campsite I believe it’s called. Might be scary place to be though during a severe thunderstorm but there ain’t too many widow makers at least up there.

In four weeks on June 18 the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 18 minutes and 58 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had hot, humid, mostly sunny and temperatures between 97 and 71 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 79 and 57 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 2018.

Looking ahead, Primary Day πŸ—³οΈ is in 5 weeks, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM πŸŒ† is in 8 weeks, State Fair Opens 🎑 is in 3 months, Constitution Day πŸ“œ is in 17 weeks, Average High 70 πŸŽ‘ is in 4 months, October πŸ›₯ is in 19 weeks and Election Day 2020 πŸ—³οΈ is in 76 weeks.
