Opinion | The Root Cause of Violent Crime Is Not What We Think It Is – The New York Times

And yet, as I have learned over more than two decades of work in this field, the black hole narrative cannot be changed by statistics alone. If you want policies that actually work, you have to change the political conversation from “tough candidates punishing bad people” to “strong communities keeping everyone safe.” Candidates who care about solving a problem pay attention to what caused it. Imagine a plumber who tells you to get more absorbent flooring but does not look for the leak.

Because the old narrative is so ingrained, candidates often assume that voters agree with it. But common sense and recent polling show that a majority of voters are concerned about crime and also supportive of changes in how we keep communities safe. This has fueled thousands of local innovations across the country. City governments, community groups and nonprofits are comparing notes on what works. And organizations like One Million Experiments are tracking innovations aimed at producing scalable solutions that do not rely on punishment. Reducing crime and reducing reliance on punishment only seem incompatible if you accept, as the narrative black hole dictates, that police and prisons are the only solution.

Daily Update – December 12, 2022

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. 🌨

That is with a blanket of snow. I guess it came yesterday, but I was very lazy and didn’t get out at all yesterday, just looking out my window in despair at all the cold and snow coming down. And we might get even more come the weekend. Maybe a big one. I should think about getting out my skis, as I may take next week off and might camp for a few days and do skiing. Depends on how much snow.

Clouds and 26 degrees in Delmar. 🌧 There is a north breeze at 8 mph. πŸƒ. There are 5 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at around noontime. 🌑️

Yesterday, I should have gone out to Five Rivers 🌨 but it started to snow early and I had very little interest in going out. Everything just seemed so cold, after spending three cold days in the Adirondacks. πŸ• It was nice getting out of town but it was very cold, especially in the morning. I do wish I had hot tented rather then sleeping in the unheated truck camper. πŸ›Œ Under the covers was fine but the cold in the morning, was well cold. ❄️

Came home on Saturday, 🌀 in part because I was sunburnt with the cold and I needed to head into town at any rate to check if I had to report to jury duty this week. πŸ‘©‍βš–οΈ Fortunately, no. I probably could have camped another night, but I didn’t want to drive home in the snow, which had already started by the time I got up on Sunday morning. β›Ί

It was a nice weekend up north β›„ but it was cold. Not windy, which helped but the mercury dropped down to the single digits both nights. And everything was wet, then icy after the mercury dropped. The wood was wet, leading to smokey campfires. πŸ”₯ If I was smart I would have pitched a tent and hot tented but I left my carbon monoxide detector home and I didn’t want to deal with setting up and taking down a tent for two days.

Finished up my freeCodeCamp Responsive HTML Class πŸ€– on Saturday evening and started the plunge into the Javascript and ES6 code. A lot of very useful features in ES6, many things I did not know before. The RegExp section is tedious, and the same old stuff but I guess it’s a good refresher.
