August 27, 2018 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 77 degrees in Delmar. β›… There is a south breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 73 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 2 am. Hot and muggy night.

Having got the Raspberry Pi in the mail today and being that I got home late and it was quite muggy, I decided to stay home tonight. 🙊 I’m kind of tired. The next few days are going to be ungodly hot. Fortunately where I work they have air conditioning.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3am. Mostly cloudy ☁, with a low of 72 degrees at 3am. 14 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 73 at 10pm. South wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2017, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 42 occurred back in 1982.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon 🌖 with 97% illuminated. The moon will set at 8:09 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Saturday night with a chance of t-storms. The Harvest Moon 🌝 is on Sunday, September 23rd. The sun will rise at 6:15 am with the first light at 5:46 am, which is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 10 hours and 39 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny and hot 😮, with a high of 93 degrees at 3pm. 15 degrees above normal. Yikes. We haven’t had heat like that since earlier in the summer. Maximum dew point of 73 at 10am. Heat index values as high as 101. West wind 7 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 75 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1948.

I couldn’t get my truck’s oil changed until after the Labor Day holiday, so I’m going to have it done a week from Wednesday. That’s such a good deal at dealership, I wonder what strings are attached. I’m sure they’ll insist the air filter is filthy when I replaced it a month ago with the headlight bulbs. Has to be a loss leader. I could wait at the dealership but I think I’ll just catch a bus to work and pick it up after work.β›½ Then I won’t have to fight traffic, or find somewhere to park it. Just catch a bus from there. Easiest way to do it. I will check the oil before I head out of town Labor Day Weekend but I anticipate it will be fine. It’s not due for an oil change right away but I always monitor the oil level like a hawk and I want fresh oil before I’m traveling a lot for work.

Wire that I tie my wallet to my belt tore loose, so I’m going to have to fix that or find an alternative. 💼I like having my wallet tied to my belt so I don’t accidentally let it fall out of my pocket.

With the new autumn bus schedule 🚏the 719 bus at 5 pm seems back to running late again. I’m hoping the new driver will learn the routes and be more timely but it’s frustrating when it’s hot out and you’re waiting for the bus that’s running perpetually late. 🚌

The Labor Day Weekend forecast continues to improve. 😍Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 63 at 4pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 81. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 68 at 4pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees. I’m particularly thrilled about Saturday being nice as that’s when I want to paddle the Cedar River Flow.

In four weeks on September 24 the sun will be setting at 6:48 pm,🌄 which is 49 minutes and 3 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2017 on that day, we had patches of fog, mist, sunny skies and temperatures between 90 and 59 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 69 and 48 degrees. The record high of 90 degrees was set back in 2017.

Looking ahead, Labor Day 👨‍🏭 is in 1 weeks, Consitution Day 📜 is in 3 weeks, October 🛥 is in 5 weeks, Columbus Day 🛥️ is in 6 weeks, Veterans Day Observed (Monday) 🇺🇸 is in 11 weeks, Cyber Monday 🛍️ is in 13 weeks and New Years Eve 🎆 is in 18 weeks.

Raspberry Pi

I got a Raspberry Pi 3B+, case and power adapter for $50 including shipping. It also comes with an HDMI cable. I have a wireless keyboard and MicroSD card I’m on using that with it. I wasn’t sure if the existing USB power supplies were beefy enough to power it so I bought one too. At least some of them would have worked others probably not due to voltage drop. While the Raspberry Pi is priced at $35 that’s before shipping and tax, and I needed a case to protect it. It arrived in the mail today.

I wasn’t going to buy it until I got the $50 rebate for my contact lens order. Then I decided I had the money to pay for it. I also decided I could make use it in several ways after reading up on it more on the internet.

First off, I could use it as a second computer when I was traveling for work in case my laptop was having problems. It’s not powerful enough to do mapping but it can do basic web surfing and office applications including the LibreOffice. With the lightweight window manager and MicroSD card providing solid state disk access it’s very quick.

At home I’m planning on using it primarily as a way to play back YouTube videos I’ve downloaded onto a flash drive. This way I can use my Bluetooth headphones which never work quite right with my laptop while watching videos. But I do need to access the internet to get some software updates, but I will have to do somewhere I can get wifi. For portability purposes I’m thinking about getting a small screen to use with it so it doesn’t always have to be hooked up to my computer monitor. It’s a full Linux based operating system so I can write whatever code and scripts that I like.

Third, I read the power specs more carefully and discovered that the power consumption wasn’t that bad for the Raspberry Pi – while they recommend a 2.5 amp 15 watt power supply to ensure ample power for all the ports, during ordinary operations it uses more like 700 milliamp or less based on my own metering of the usage. Roughly 3 watts not including the monitor. Sure that’s a lot more power than a Arduino Nano or ESP32 but I don’t expect this to be running 24-7. It’s a full featured computer that runs Linux and X11 not a microprocessor for driving specific applications.

It’s an interesting technology I want to play with more over the coming weeks. With an open source Linux based operating system, plus a full window manager, browser and a lot of IO pins there is much I can do with it.

August 27, 2018 9:18 pm Update

I got my absentee ballot today in the mail. πŸ“¬ I wish I paid more attention to politics so I would know who I should vote for. I guess with the internet these days I can read up on the candidates in the primary.

August 27, 2018 5:37 pm Update

A sure sign that autumn is here. πŸ‚The autumn bus drivers are back… And the 719 bus is only running 15 minutes late, complete with a CDTA supervisor escort.πŸš“πŸšŒ I hope at least they found a bus that doesn’t stall out on the expressway. Maybe I’ll make it home by six o’clock.πŸ•§

Some how during the summer they can make the 719 busesΒ reliable and on time. But come autumn through spring, they only send out the jalopies with the tardy drivers out to Voorheesville.

Bus Turns On To Eagle Street

August 27, 2018 2:56 pm Update

I noticed that 512 MB M.2 SSD drives are now in the range of $100. I’ve wanted to upgrade to SSD since I got my laptop during the end of 2016, so my laptop boots up quickly and loads applications really fast; I think I will come November.

August 26, 2018 Night

Good evening! The weekend has come to an end, like they always do. Next weekend is Labor Day Weekend, and hopefully it will be nice. It cleared out after the rain shower that got my hammock and truck cap insides wet with the cap windows open and 69 degrees in Westerlo. β˜” There is a west-southwest breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 66 degrees. The muggy weather ends Thursday around 10 pm. πŸ˜“

This past weekend I spent up at Piseco-Powley Road, on Saturday driving down to Little Falls to explore Moss Island and the great glacial Potholes again, then went for a hike along the Erie Canalway Trail through the deep rock cut and into the Rollaway neighborhood of Little Falls. Hiked back a ways in the other direction, then got repeatedly stung by bees when I sat down on an overgrown bench along the trail, then when I got back to my truck, drove up to Dolgeville, got ice cream, and then went back to camp, had a few beers and some dinner, fell asleep listening to a podcast in my hammock. This morning I went for a paddle on the East Canada Creek, did some fishing, and some writing before taking down camp.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 11pm. Patchy fog after midnight. Otherwise, partly cloudy , with a low of 64 degrees at 5am. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 10pm. West wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2017, we had partly cloudy skies, clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 41 occurred back in 1969.

This whole week is expected to be quite warm, with temperatures in the upper 80s and maybe low 90s by mid-week. That’s quite warm for late August but not unheard of in the history books. πŸ– I guess it’s good for the people that have this week off, as it seemed like there were a lot of people up at Piseco-Powley Road.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny 🌞 , with a high of 84 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 11am. West wind 3 to 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 75 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1948.

Today in 1920, the 19th amendment to United States Constitution takes effect, giving women the right to vote in federal elections.πŸ—³ Seems quite unbelievable that it was so long for women to have a federal right to vote, but then again African Americans down south by in large couldn’t vote easily until the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1968. That said, voting is an important right to have, although it’s no substitute for making your own way and finding solutions to your own problems without the government’s help.

Looking ahead, there are 10 weeks until Daylight Savings Time Ends πŸ›₯️ when the sun will be setting at 4:44 pm with dusk at 5:14 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2017, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 50 and 33 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 53 degrees. We hit a record high of 76 back in 1994.

It’s a bit hard to know for sure what Labor Day Weekend will look like, but some models show it being reasonably nice.πŸ‘· Next Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 72. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 62 at 12pm. Next Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 67 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees.

I am still hoping to get up to Moose River Plains for Labor Day Weekend, 🌲 but that depends on my work schedule and how the weather is. I am really dying to paddle the Cedar River Flow for sure.

In four weeks on September 23 the sun will be setting at 6:50 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 48 minutes and 47 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2017 on that day, we had mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 85 and 53 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 69 and 49 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1895.

Looking ahead, Daylight Savings Time Ends πŸ›₯️ is in 10 weeks, Veterans Day (Sunday) πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ is in 11 weeks, Cyber Monday πŸ›οΈ is in 3 months, First Sunday of Advent ✝️ is in 14 weeks and Boxing Day πŸ₯Š is in 4 months.

August 27, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Next Monday is Labor Day πŸ‘¨β€πŸ. How fast summer comes to an end. Maybe the muggy weather will follow. Partly sunny and 75 degrees in Albany. Calm wind. The dew point is 67 degrees. πŸ˜“ Already getting muggy and hot just waiting for the bus! And the muggers will be with us all week. The muggy weather ends Friday around 3 am.

Taking the local yokel bus to work 🚌 because I camped over at my parents house and I knew that I wouldn’t have had time to walk down to the express. Tomorrow if it’s not too ungodly hot I will walk down to the express. It’s a much more pleasant ride, assuming that there are no fights breaking out between motorists in the South Mall Arterial in the traffic lanes.😑

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞 , with a high of 86 degrees at 4pm. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 70 at 4pm. Yuck. At least my office is air conditioned but I think I will close the blinds when I get in the office. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 75 degrees. A very much nicer day then today. The record high of 97 was set in 1948.

Back to work. It was a nice weekend at Pisceo Powley Road although I wish I had more sun to enjoy and that I could have camp at Powley Place. β›ΊMaybe this autumn before the big game hunting season gets underway and seasonal hunters set up their camp for the season.🦌 I’ll be happy shooting things that are small enough that I can cut up on my table at camp. I do need to get my hunting license though, maybe this week.🎫

The sun will set at 7:37 pm with dusk around 8:06 pm, which is one minute and 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly clear skies and 82 degrees. The dew point will be 71 degrees. The heat index around sunset will be 76. β›± There will be a south-southwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 21 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ☁, with a low of 72 degrees at 3am. 14 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 71 at 7pm. South wind 5 to 8 mph. In 2017, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 42 occurred back in 1982.

Today in 1859, Petroleum is discovered in Titusville, Pennsylvania leading to the world’s first commercially successful oil well. β›½To this day, that town still smells like petroleum, and it floats as a shiny residue in the creeks, but they produce much less oil today then at the peak around the turn of the century.πŸ›’Β Yeah, Edward Drake for powering our cars and heating our planet.

Speaking of oil, I am going to call the General up about getting the oil changed in Big Red. I have a coupon for a $50 synthetic oil change and tire rotation and I can’t but good quality synthetic oil and a filter for that price and do it at home.🚘 Its those damn one quart bottles of synthetic oil – the five quarts are like $30 and the final quart is always $10 plus throw in $10 for a good filter and paper towels.πŸ’° You see where this is going. At least I only change the oil every ten months or so, and I’m actually doing it early because I want to get it done before I’m traveling for work.🏎

Still hoping to get up to Moose River Plains for the Memorial Day Weekend. β›Ί Weather forecast has improved lately. We will see, there looks like there is instability in the upper atmosphere in the long range.Β My big thing is I want Saturday to be nice, so I can paddle the Cedar River Flow 🚣 then Sunday hang out up in the Plains, watching the sun set at Helldiver Pond with the others looking for Herald the Helldiver Moose.🦌 I don’t care about them moose, as I doubt he will show his face,Β  but the sunsets are nice. Maybe go for a paddle on Helldiver too and see how many useless small bullheads I can catch in that pond.🎣 And watch the stars from the sandy plains, on hopefully clear nights with the waning moon not rising to early hours of morning.🌌

As previously noted, next Monday is Labor Day πŸ‘¨β€πŸ when the sun will be setting at 7:25 pm with dusk at 7:54 pm. On that day in 2017, we had rain, drizzle, heavy fog, shallow fog, patches of fog, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 58 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 100 back in 1953.
