Good Evening – September 16, 2021
Good evening! It is a pleasant fall evening for sitting out back with a touch of humidity. ๐
I decided with the early sunsets that I think I’ll wait until tomorrow night to pack for the Adirondacks and then head up early Saturday morning. I didn’t take off Monday or Tuesday for next week but I don’t anticipate it being a problem.
Mostly cloudy and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ There is a southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐. The dew point is 64 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 1 pm.
It’s a pretty nice early I sat out back for a couple of hours ๐ although it was obnoxious when the elderly ๐ง neighbor put the bright scare lights before heading out to town while I’m just sitting out back enjoying the night. I was so cranky ๐ฆ about the truck this morning, I missed my walk ๐ถ so I only got in about 8,000 steps for the day. I thought I was doing over 10,000 a day but I’m finding I’m falling short as lately I’ve not been doing my morning and evening walks as regularly as I should. ๐ถ
I thought about it some more and I might take off either the last week of October or more likely the second week of November – Veterans Day Weekend ๐ to do a trip either to Western New York and Pennsylvania or maybe West Virginia. If I do more low elevation stuff and head down to the New River Gorge it might still have decent color. ๐ I really would like to get down to the gorge. Regardless, there won’t be the crowds and it might be fun to go a different week when it’s quieter. More hunters but I might get to meet some real backwoods outdoorsman during the season especially somewhere like Camp Run or Gandy Run. The question just becomes when does the snow and ice ๐จ come for the winter? The climate high country West Virginia is similar to the Adirondacks and Catskills.
But first this weekend โบ it’s off to the Adirondacks for one last hurrah of summer or so I can pretend. I want to use the tube ๐ and kayak ๐ถ at least one more time before it’s too cold. ๐ฆ Saturday should be fairly warm but then seasonable autumn like weather for Sunday onward. Indian summer seems canceled. It always does get cool this time of year although I like the long nights at camp especially when I do a lot of cooking. But summer came and went in the blink of an eye ๐โ๐จ.
I really do need to put a finger ๐ on on my anxiety, and I just stop avoiding so many things in my life. ๐ป It was stupid that I dragged my feet so long on my truck ๐ป of course who would think it would be a month until I could get my truck aligned at the one local shop with the big lift – I thought if anything the delay would be ordering the tires. โญ I just hate spending money ๐ต on something I’m going to throw tin in a few years, although ultimately I’m not spending money on the truck but the experiences it brings me. I thought I could get away with feet dragging ๐ค and waiting until more money came in. ๐ฃ
Maybe though my therapist was right, ๐ I’m concerned about the stupid things not the things that could cause real harm or risk. So you want to live out in the country in an off grid cabin, burn your own trash, heat with wood, have pigs and cattle guns and four wheelers – that doesn’t make you mentally ill – just your a redneck wanna be. ๐The things that are harmful are your anxiety and the experiences your missing by holding back. โ Caution isn’t a bad thing but it can become harmful. That’s the real harm – not the dreams of making some black ๐ค smoke out in sticks. ๐ At some point I’ll take up some more counseling but I got to make time for it and hopefully with some guy who is less creepy and reminds me I’m not as bad off as the rapists and heroin addicts he normally deals with.
I been continuing to work on improvements to the mapping back end ๐บ on the blog, although ultimately I know it needs a complete rewrite to make it more efficient and easier to maintain as I keep hacking additional features into it to make new maps.

My growing fascination with Python ๐ข
Lately I’ve doing a lot of blog posts about the Python programming language and the PANDAS library mainly because I am utterly amazed at how powerful, quick and convenient it is for doing my every day tasks.
I think the reason I like it so much is that it saves so much time and it allows for so much experimentation with data. With the Jupyter Notebook, you can execute a one or two lines of code at a time – allowing you to test things without completely restarting your program or loading data into memory again.
From somebody who was over reliant on spreadsheets, it’s really such a big jump forward – especially for data I process regularly. And it’s been excited for me, as there is always so much more to learn.
Weather Update – September 16, 2021
I think the plan for this weekend is to head up to Piseco-Powley road for a long weekend. ๐
It looks like we might get one more round of Indian Summer before it fades away to autumn. ๐ I bet there is some color up north, and real good color up at Moose River Plains, but I don’t want to drive that far north for a weekend trip. I do like the idea though of floating for a bit in the tube around Stewart Landing or maybe in the East Canada Creek.
I just like Piseco-Powley Road area — it’s off the beaten track, has a lot to do but not so far from home. I haven’t yet taken off Monday and Tuesday, but I will give the calendar one more look and then decide later today. It should be a pretty nice weekend it seems, not too cold for early autumn — technically not autumn until next week.
Plus the it’s only a three 3โฃ day work week the next week. These five day weeks all downtown are a drag. ๐ฒ I got to spend more time in the woods before it gets all cold โ and snowy. Winters coming fast although hopefully not too soon ๐ before I can get another week out in the wilderness be it West Virginia or Pennsylvania or New York, out in the woods with my gun ๐ซ and a butcher knife cooking over an open fire ๐ฅ.

Good Morning – September 16, 2021
Good morning! Well we made it to Thursday.
Sometimes the best laid plans don’t go plan especially if you intentionally sabotage them. I should have dealt with the truck issues weeks ago, but I didn’t and now it’s too late for West Virginia, although I guess I had never really seriously planned to go there this autumn. But I now am working on alternative plans, including a three or four day weekend this weekend.
Partly cloudy and 64 degrees at the Delmar, NY. There is a north breeze at 7 mph. ๐. The dew point is 60 degrees. The skies will clear around 10 am.
Yesterday, I made call to Watkins Spring and they told me they couldn’t schedule an appointment until mid-October, as their machine is down. So it looks like am scheduled for October 14th, which was the week I was planning to go to West Virginia. I really need to get new tires on my truck, especially before such a long trip, but I waited and waited on the alignment. It was stupid on my part, but I just wasn’t sure what I really wanted to do.
It was just a phone call I should have made weeks ago, but I really hate to spend the money. Not on the alignment, but all the certain to be found other broken parts and then those big 35 inch tires, which I like. Needs to get done though. I am not going to bother to order the tires until the alignment is done, because that would be silly. So I’m looking at November.
But in the mean time, I’ll probably plan some smaller weekend trips around town. I am thinking about a four day weekend up to Piseco-Powley this weekend as it looks warm, or maybe start a few nights up at Stewart Landing to paddle and float around there in the tube, while we still have warmish weather. Then maybe another trip somewhere later in September or early October. The tires are still legal, but they are getting increasingly dry rotted, and they are cupped and loud.
I think I can get through November, but I need better tires come winter and state inspection late in November. I shouldn’t have delayed forever — but hopefully the snow will hold off until later this year, so I can plan other trips come November. If I stay in New York, I have my hunting license — maybe the Finger Lakes National Forest would be a nice spring board off to other nearby forests. I actually am a big fan of November camping.
I could still go down to West Virginia come November, but I don’t know. I am kind of bored with it, although I still want to explore Dolly Sods more. Maybe this year in November or next. I do need to a bit careful with vacation time — I didn’t accumulate as many credited hours this year
working from home, and next year maybe quite busy. Honestly though, I don’t if I really wanted to go down there — I procrastinated and procrastinated — suggesting it wasn’t something I cared about that much. Plus money is always so god-damn tight all of the time.
I’m just so focused on the future, that it’s hard to justify more spending today, especially for a meaningless vacation that would be over in a week. West Virginia was fun the first few times, but now it’s kind of all the same. Some point I want to get farther south in that state, and check out the New River Gorge, but I just don’t see that happening this year.
It really is the fault of my damn anxiety ๐ especially when it comes to all things money ๐ต and repairs. ๐ If I were to bite the bullet sooner things would be better ๐ but it’s so easy to put off until tomorrow. I just keep thinking about the future ๐ฎ and the better life of tomorrow, knowing that time โ and constant saving will get me there eventually.
Other than that I installed a new app on my phone ๐ฑ to track my steps but with the rain last night I only got in around 8,000 for the day. ๐ถ I was surprised that my morning walk is only about 4,000 steps. I always thought that it was more. It certainly rained hard last night.
I got watching a series of videos about programing in Qt. ๐ฅ Lately I’ve just become really interested in computers and how they work. I know the Qt GUI API from my years writing little plugins to automate mapping in QGIS. The C++ API and signal are slots method is almost the same as with Python which I normally use for writing plugins. I’m almost 40, I don’t care if people think I’m a computer geek ๐ค but I like being able to automate processes and learn more about computers. But still I refuse to get internet at home ๐ถ and I have relatively little technology besides my smartphone and my five years old laptop.
