Good evening! Clear and 65 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 56 degrees. Not a half bad evening, sitting out back, sipping some orange juice listening to the frogs sing their song. 

Voted this evening, dropped off some paper to the recycling dumpster, and bought groceries. I bought coffee which is essential because I had little left and what I had made up all week was not very strong. Returned some beer cans. Went for my evening walk and are now sitting out back. Heading in shortly to bed. 

Tonight will have patchy dense fog after 4am. Otherwise, mostly clear, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Maximum dew point of 56 at 9pm. Calm wind. In 2016, we had clear skies. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1964.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter with 39% illuminated, rising at 12:23 am. The Hunter Moon is on Thursday, October 5th. The sun will rise at 6:33 am with the first light at 6:04 am, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. Tonight will have 11 hours and 24 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have areas of dense fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high of 79 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 60 at 6pm.  Another really nice day on tap.  Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1948.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Maximum dew point of 65 at 2pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 81. Maximum dew point of 64 at 4pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 72 degrees.

I am pretty sure I’m heading up to Pisceo Powley Road one more time before winter this weekend. I think it will be warm enough for the Potholers. I’m thinking about om Saturday going to Little Falls to explore that area with my kayak. Although I wonder if the dams are still in on the Mohawk River as I heard they ended the navigation season early this year. That’s a good question warranting further research. 

In four weeks on October 10 the sun will be setting at 6:20 pm, which is 49 minutes and 8 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had sunny skies and temperatures between 59 and 39 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 62 and 41 degrees. The record high of 89 degrees was set back in 1939.

As we head into the middle of September the days continue to get shorter and the average temperature drops into the low 70, not that you’d notice that on such beautiful late summer day. In a few weeks you’ll be seeing the leaves change color, then deer season, Thanksgiving and the holidays.

Eastern Forests Change Color As Red Maples Proliferate

"Liberated from their swamp ghettos, red maples have become abundant in the understory -- the carpet of saplings and smaller plants under the canopy -- of many forested stretches in the Middle Atlantic States, the Northeast, the Midwest, the Great Lakes region and in higher Southern elevations like the Appalachians and Piedmont. When the oaks and other species of older trees die, red maples will replace them, Dr. Abrams said. In some spots, that has already happened.

This is all the more remarkable, he said, because the red maple, though versatile, is not especially robust. In the conventional terms of plant physiology, the faster a plant converts sunlight to energy and the better it is at sucking up nutrients, adapting to drought and ''breathing'' efficiently, the better it can compete with other plants.

The red maple is not particularly good at any of these; it is ''toward the low side of average'' in such measures, Dr. Abrams said. ''It's leading me to believe that studies at the physiological level don't tell us very much about the ecological success'' of a plant, he said."

Thoughts while Fishing

Didn't have much luck fishing on Thompsons Lake but I didn't get out there real early, and it was kind of a cool but sunny day.

Why I Sometimes Buy Plastic Bagged Wood

Simply because I can legally bring it across state lines and move it more then 50 miles across the state, and don't have to worry about getting ticketed. That said, I usually try to just find wood wherever I am in the woods.
