Climate change is real and its impacting us all already and itβs going to only get worse. The politiciansβ solutions β where they exist at all β are kind of bad, mostly consisting of evacuation centers and welfare and reminding people that itβs okay to walk away from the post storm deterus β theyβll cart it off to the landfill for you.
First off, recognizing that political activism is not going to protect me from climate change. The buck stops with me.
Buying a Prisus or electric car wonβt protect me but buying a backhoe might.
Own a house that has metal roofing and remove trees nearby that could burn in a wildfire
Make sure the house and barn are well away from streams and flood plains that could flood in extreme rain
Have an independent off-grid electric system and on site fuel storage
Have a tractor with a front end loader to both bury debris and dead stock, and also fill in and repair washouts
Have extra materials like timber, plywood, gravel, dirt and culverts to make repairs after wash outs.
Not own a lot of material things that are easily damaged by water or smoke
Be willing to do with a lot less with the land rather than the property
A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys Painted wings and giantβs rings make way for other toys One gray night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more And Puff, that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar
So the summer 2025 camping season kicks off, traveling and exploring like so many other years. Itβs starting out such a typical way, packing my gear in Big Red getting ready to head out of town after work at 3 PM that is after getting bacon at For the Love of Bacon. Maybe get set up around by 6 PM or so and have good fire going by 8 PM. I wanted to pick up some pallets to chop up for wood but Iβm not sure if I will have room with the bike and stuff. Probably for the best, I shouldnβt be burning pallets with all the nails and crap that I could get into those 35 inch tires.
Itβs good to be doing it one more year, as both I and Big Red are getting old and who knows how many more yearβs Iβll be traveling. I tell myself some day Iβll own a homestead, and that will mean staying home to feed goats and pigs. That said, I will be enjoying that bacon I got today. I guess I could buy a subruban house, but I think thatβs kind of pointless. I donβt know, maybe next year Iβll get a new truck and conitue to travel, but Iβm also kind of bored with that and kind of do want to settle down. Plus at times all that time in wilderness gets lonely. β₯οΈ
Woke up this morning feeling a bit sore but rested. Maybe Iβm just nervous, it could be caffeine or just getting started. I checked the fluid levels in Red, and heβs running good, drove great to the store. Still itβs the first big adventure in a while. Looking forward to a good fire tonight, where Iβm camping there wonβt be a lot of dry grass and rain is coming tomorrow, though now not until late. Need to get some E-books, Audiobooiks, and Podcasts to enjoy while Iβm up at camp. Iβll do that today at work.
I was so anxious about this trip probably because I am overtired, as I slept poorly last night. But tomorrow itβs actually happening, I am leaving work at 3 PM.
First thing I noted was gas was cheap β $3.02 a gallon but avocadoβs were expensive. Thanks Trump. Only needed about $70 in groceries but I think I was pretty much good on camping supplies and just needed a partial restock of my pantry before heading north. Got $40 from the bank so I had some money to get bacon from For the Love of Bacon on my way up to the Adirondacks. Going to grab a few pallets if I have enough room, though my truck is kind of packed with the camping gear plus the burnables I plan to burn that accumulated over the winter β lots of wrappers and paper for fire starting and burning. Would have brought more, but the stuff that isnβt confidential I guess the recycling man can get.
Going to be off the grid for a few days, which is great though itβs pretty remote country. But Iβll be fine, I always am. Going to rain a lot on Friday night into Saturday but Friday and Sunday look pretty good for the bulk of the day, and Saturday I can maybe smoke some pot and do some reading and fishing in the rain on the East Branch. Brining the mountain bike and Iβll ride on Sunday around the Perkins Clearing, do some fishing and then I was thinking I would drive back to Rotterdam Junction by 4 or 5 PM and ride the Erie Canal Trail until dusk and then come home and unpack. Get groceries and do my laundry on Monday night after work. I am so excited to be heading back up to the remote wilderness again!
The spot on the map you end up in Eastern NY when you are using unprojected coordinates in Eastern NY and forget to cast as a float. I wonder how many people end up at Glenhurst Stock Farm when their GPS or mapping program goes nutty.
