Getting away from it all, that is after a pee break šŸ•

Mornings are definitely a lot darker now that we are heading into September, with today’s sunrise at 6:10 AM. But I’m up and going, after a late of steak, an emergency bathroom break at the State Office Building and catching a later bus home then getting packed for camp.

My Thursday evening meeting was canceled due to a flooded office and I packed my truck mostly last night for camping šŸ•. I’m going to get propane this morning and then head into the office then up to camp for a quiet three nights off the grid. Might not get up until close to dark tonight but it’s fine. šŸŒƒ August is always tough, plus I’m not going to be able to leave right at Five. I’m not as hung over as I was afraid I’d be this morning. šŸ¤® Not perfect but I’ll survive with enough coffee ā˜• and water. I’m fine to drive in and then once work is done I’ll head north so I get an extra night in camping and can spend all day on Friday floating, reading and riding. ā­•šŸš² šŸ“– Probably the last time I can fully get away through November, there is just too much work to do. Trying to be hydrated and caffinated this morning so things go smoothly – didn’t get to bed until after 11 AM, kept waking up to pee and I was up around 6 AM. Actually earlier but I started my day slow.

That $71 strip steak at 677 Prime šŸ„© was pretty darn good as was the several glasses of cabrera at that hundred šŸ’Æ plus dollar a plate šŸ½ event I attended last night. But I got so drunk after a few glasses of wine šŸ· and while ultimately I caught the later bus home, I ended up catching an emergency piss break šŸš½ in the old office šŸ¢ building IĀ  used to work downtown after catching a bus up there šŸš. I’m sure I was on the security camera but I wasn’t disruptive and was in and out of the bathroom. It’s fine, only a buck thirty, and I didn’t wet my pants šŸ‘– after a fun evening. Totally overdressed for the event but what did I know about dress code at Albany’s fanciest steak house. Truth is I don’t know anything about the way sophisticated people eat eat and drink, I alway defer to my colleagues. I fully understand where JD Vance comes from. I hear about people taking plains and trains to other parts of the nation and I think of all the places I could travel on my income if I wanted. šŸ›¬ So many things I could do if I only chose. I could have my own land, a much nicer place. I do make six figures but that’s still pretty meaningless with inflation these days. I realize what’s holding me back is solely myself. I could cut a check and be in a house or on land within a month if I so chose. šŸ˜ I mean I still have that friend who I think has feeder pigs šŸ· and while it’s heading into winter, I could have chickens come the spring. šŸ”Going to get some books to read over the weekend.

I should treasure these good days in Albany, šŸ¢ with my job and being a director. I love my job but so many elements don’t fit my social class. So many people don’t have the luxuries that I have but still so many days I feel like I’m struggling on the crumbs, one step away from homelessness and losing it all. šŸ’” I read the news šŸ“°, maybe not as much as others do but I’m well aware of the risk. Sure I could have taken an Uber home but I prefer to bus it home. Had I had land, I wouldn’t have been able to drink so much as I would have had to drive home. šŸ” Still I know I certainly poisoned my body last night but that Cabrera and steak was good. šŸ„© šŸ·I think I would much rather smoke then consume alcohol these days. Fucks you up less the next day. But some how that is still is kind of taboo, outside of the blog I don’t talk much about being a pot-smoker. It was though nice chatting with the other directors after having a glass or two of wine, realizing that we all have the same kinds of problems, recruiting and keeping good people, moving our own departments forward.

I really still have bad feelings about this Drive and Save Program I installed on my phone šŸ“±. I’m really creeped out about it. I have nothing invested, the program is free I can quit at any time. That said, never starting the program after signing up makes me feel guilty especially after I got that sixty dollars credit on my car insurance bill. šŸš˜ I get it’s a trap to get people hooked on the program so they become safer drivers. But I need to be able to know when calls and text come in and have access to Waze. I’ll give it a try and if it proves too obnoxious I’ll return the dongle to my insurance agent. šŸŖ™ I think I worry too much about pennies. If ultimately, it doesn’t work out, I was reading that I can uninstall the app, they don’t even want the Bluetooth fab back (but I probably should return it) and it appears that I can keep my $60 discount for just signing up. Worse comes to worse, they don’t renew my policy and I’ll have to go with another insurer. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Been thinking a lot about the anti-theft measures at Walmart, šŸ›ļø like doing away with the self-checkout except for small orders and locking up cheap soap and other random things behind glass. šŸ›’ It’s a pain but it’s intentional, as I’m sure they want to become more like Amazon where a bulk of their sales is through delivery šŸšš and pickup rather then having the massive store footprint. šŸ‘£ Make it inconvenient enough for people to buy things at the store, they will order online. That means they can have less inventory just sitting in stores, as even if you are ordering something like a gallon of milk for pickup, they know to put it on the next truck to replenish hours earlier then if you scanned at the cash register.

Plus let’s be honest, self-checkout is kind a joke. šŸŒ Something doesn’t scan, how many times do you try again before just putting it into your bag? Often even the supervisors don’t really care who are supposed to be watching you. A $2 tube of toothpaste by all means is hardly a big loss. But I’m sure if this happens every 5th customer, it adds up! šŸ’µ And it’s not like stores are going to spend that much effort going after people not correctly scanning that toothpaste, especially if it’s not clear if it’s shopping lifting or an unintentional scan error. In theory they could use facial recognition, file a police report and take you to court, but they would only be eligible for 3 times the sale price, and the district attorney would probably be loathe to take on such cases when it’s plausible it’s a scan error. What happens if the defendent is a white-collar middle-age professional who demands a jury trial and the video be shown during the trial? šŸ“ŗ It could get very expensive for county quickly over a $2 tube of toothpaste, as investigators are often very well paid. Obviously a big screen TV or an expensive good is different, but I’m sure 99% of all lost merchandise on the self scan machines are a single item under $5 out of a much bigger order, where it really isn’t clear if somebody was not paying attention or was actually trying to get free shit.

Other then that, I need to look more at E-Books to read over the weekend, šŸ“‘ along with podcats and music. šŸŽ§ I want to have a lot to listen to and keep me busy both while I’m in the hammock šŸ“š and floating on the tube. That said, if I’m truly relaxed and higher then a kite, maybe an audio book would be better. I still have all 10 Hoopla borrows left, and while I like to save them to the end of the month, let’s be honest, usually the 30th or 31st comes around, and I’m making a mad dash to download as many books as possible before my borrows and expire, and I end up with one or two books I’m never going to listen to at any rate. And that’s kind of waste of my borrowing privileges. šŸŽŸ

Simply requesting the beacon and installing the app saved me $60 on the September insurance renewal. That’s cool. Ten percent discount. Maybe go up to 30% but I think it will be below ten percent when I renew just because I have my phone screen on when I drive for Waze and in case I get phone calls, emails or text messages that require me to pull over and respond for work. I’m a director, I can’t be fully off grid every time I’m in automobile. I’m not going to necessarily touch or look down at my phone, it’s safely put in my phone cradle as I drive, like I’ve done for the past decade and a half.

So far I’m not thrilled by the app. I find it annoying it yells me every time I turn off the Bluetooth to disconnect my headphones, but so be it. I probably will also get dinged for inevitable smartphone use while driving — not that I frequently touch my phone while driving due to the law — but because the screen is on as use Waze to monitor traffic and specifically my speed because my speedometer is off by about 9% too low due to the 35 inch tires. Plus I need to know when a text message or call comes in from work, so if necessary I can pull over and respond. I don’t ever take calls or reply to texts while driving though occasionally I’ll report touch my phone cops on Waze, though I am certainly willing to not do that. I’m careful and rarely do that as I don’t want to get a ticket.

I’d rather pay more on insurance then risk getting a speeding ticket due to my speedometer being off. Or not hearing the warning ping when I’m speeding. I’m careful but not perfect and hearing the bell ring can remind me to slow down. I just hope the app doesn’t constantly complain and interfere with my use just because I leave Waze running and the screen on while I drive. Maybe an occasional ping or warning message ain’t the end of the world and I’m willing to forfeit that part of the discount but it’s a problem if it makes it difficult to use my phone or the annoying factor is too high.

I guess there is a risk the insurance would notice my odometer is off by 9% but it’s not like it should effect rates much as I’m already in the 7,500 plus mile class, as despite not commuting I do a fair amount of miles on weekend trips and summer and fall vacations. Then there is the issue of how the acceleration meter will read my jacked up truck going around the curves — it’s a big lifted truck — it sways and dips a lot on bumps and curves, though I probably drive slower then most because of that fact. I guess the risk is low, as your guaranteed a 5% discount and the right to cancel at any time. Yes, I guess they could use data to in theory deny a claim, but I am not sure if there is much evidence of that or the state insurance regulator allowing it.

I probably should look are more insurance companies, but the one time I had a claim it was paid and my family has done business with the Elaine Van DeCarr for 40 years now. Auto insurance has become a lot more expensive recently, both thanks to climate change, bad driving habits and the legislature mandating more coverage, and it’s across the market. When I compared plans in the past, though I found there wasn’t a big difference prices — many of the options were more expensive with my unblemished record. If anything the big savings came when new insurers tried to push you into higher deductible plans, and especially with lower coverage limits. Lower coverage limits is fine if you don’t have many assets, but I have all that money I’ve been saving to buy land and that off-grid property, and motoring is a risky activity, and I want to ensure I have good coverage limits, well above the state minimum.

Maybe I’m too willing to give up my privacy for what literally is a few bucks a month. But insurance just keeps going up and I would like to become a safer driver. Crashes are no joke, they can forever change your life. And even pennies add up after time. I don’t believe in conspiracies and I understand the protections given to me under law and what the insurance company can and can not use my data for. Plus New York State not only has expensive car insurance but also strong regulations on industry practices. But privacy advocates are not wrong and I’m enabling potentially really bad behavior for industry.

But I guess it’s worth a try.

Nonfarm payroll growth revised down by 818,000, Labor Department says

The U.S. economy created 818,000 fewer jobs than originally reported in the 12-month period through March 2024, the Labor Department reported Wednesday.

As part of its preliminary annual benchmark revisions to the nonfarm payroll numbers, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said the actual job growth was nearly 30% less than the initially reported 2.9 million from April 2023 through March of this year.

The revision to the total payrolls level of -0.5% is the largest since 2009. The numbers are routinely revised each month, but the BLS does a broader revision each year when it gets the results of the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages.

I do want to get back to West Virginia next year … šŸ‚

I’ll have to see how that will work out though. I’m not convinced that Big Red will make it down there one more time, but maybe, actually quite possible that I will have a new truck by then as Red is turning 13 years old in a few weeks and showing a fair bit of rust and age. I don’t know if I will buy a house and homestead by then, cannabis isn’t legal there, and there is that issue that you now have to pre-reserve the campsites at County Bridge Campground in Penna. and pay extra fees if that’s where I want to do the overnight rather then at Sugar Hill State Forest or Long Pond State Forest in New York.

But it was such fun to spend a full week camping up in Canaan Heights and doing a lot of mountain biking, exploring all the West Virginia highlands have to offer. I still have yet to get down to the New River Gorge, but would like to still do that again. I would like to do it again, at least one more time. Certainly a new, smaller truck would be more efficient and reliable for taking such a long trip. But who knows how much commitments I would have back in Albany, especially if I have land at that point. Yet, I do enjoy travel a lot and West Virginia is such a beautiful state.
