UN report finds temperature rise is ‘locked in’ for Arctic | TheHill

"The Arctic is now β€œlocked in” to experiencing unnatural levels of temperature rise by as early as 2050, according to a new United Nations environmental report out Wednesday. Dramatic temperature increases in the globe’s northernmost region, which is typically covered by permafrost, is unavoidable, according to the report released at the United Nations Environment Assembly."

This NPR Article on Climate Change

I heard this article this morning on NPR news and was instantly bummed out thinking about how far out we are from seriously addressing climate change as a species.

Goats and Soda: It’s 2050 And This Is How We Stopped Climate Change

Basically, the solution to climate change is futurism, or so we are told. But nothing becomes more dated faster then the futurism. And the truth is futurism is more just a projection of what we hope the future looks like, using existing technology, that isn’t affordable or doesn’t exist. It’s nice to dream that we can do better, but do very little to address the problem.

I don’t know if I am willing to give up burning massive quantities of fossil fuels to solve the climate crisis. Simplicity is great, but giving up fossil fuels would probably mean giving up much of what makes humans a modern species — speedy transportation, advanced chemistry, light, sound, heat, and music. Giving all that up, really is a boat too far for many if not most Americans. It’s great to dream about a future, but plans don’t get there without action.

A coal baron’s dream

New EPA chief: A coal baron’s dream

"Bob Murray is a 79-year-old coal baron who brags to news outlets that he calls many of the shots after β€œeight years of pure hell” under the Obama administration. Murray thinks most environmental, health, and worker safety protections are unlawful, often putting him at odds with other industry interests that appreciate some regulatory oversight."

"Murray was an early supporter of President Donald Trump’s, campaigning with him, donating $300,000 to his inauguration, and another million dollars when he wanted Trump to prop up the industry. Shortly after Trump’s election, Murray submitted an action plan in two memos to the Energy Department and Vice President Mike Pence in the White House laying out almost 20 changes to existing policy. His target was primarily the Environmental Protection Agency, but also the DOE and the Labor Department’s Mine Safety and Health Administration. After only one year, Murray boasted that the Trump administration had already β€œwiped out” the first page of his almost four-page plan."
