Calls To Make Juneteenth A Federal Holiday Gain Momentum : NPR

Corporate executives and sports officials are joining a growing number of elected officials who want to recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery, as an official U.S. holiday. The movement is being fueled by the Black Lives Matter protests demanding reforms following the killing of 46-year-old George Floyd by Minneapolis police on May 25.

Juneteenth, which is on June 19, has long been an important holiday in the African American community, a time for celebration rather than mourning and remembrance.

Pool closings

With the what seems almost inevitable pool closings this summer 🏊 I’ve been thinking about places that would be good to cool off during hot weather…

  • Grout Pond in the Green Mountain National Forest
  • The Potholers on Piseco Powley Road
  • The swimming hole by the Old Fox Lair camp on NY 8 in the East Branch Sacandaga River
  • The West Branch Sacandaga River at White House
  • The Speculator Beach, assuming it’s unguarded
  • Wakely Dam – Cedar River Flow
  • Otter Creek near Eaton Road Campsites
  • South Branch Moose River by the falls campsite on Woodhull Lake Road
  • Moose River under the Otter Brook Bridge at Moose River Plains
  • Otter Brook under the Otter Brook Bridge
  • Schoharie Creek by the Rest Area if water levels allow
  • Schoharie Creek under the Blenheim Bridge
  • Swimming hole on the East Canada Creek by House Pond campsite

A much needed change in the weather

It looks like as we head into the mid-July, we are in for a change in the weather pattern, with some hot and sunny weather expected. I’m looking forward to hopefully having some nice weather for my trip out to the Finger Lakes followed by Western NY and Allegheny National Forest in two weeks. Now I’m just hoping the bugs will get less bad with the weather drying and improving.
