Green Mountain National Forest is a national forest located in Vermont, a forest area typical of the New England/Acadian forests ecoregion. The forest supports a variety of wildlife, including beaver, moose, coyote, black bear, and white tailed deer. It also supports an abundant variety of bird species, such as wild turkey and ruffed grouse. The forest, being situated in Vermont’s Green Mountains, has been referred to as the ‘granite backbone’ of the state.
The forest was established in 1932, as a result of uncontrolled overlogging, fire and flooding.[3] It consists of 399,151 acres (1,615.31 km2); and is the biggest contiguous land mass in the state. If Finger Lakes National Forest, which is managed as a unit of the Green Mountain National Forest, is included within it, GMNF is one of only two national forest northeast of the Pennsylvania-New Jersey barrier; the other being the White Mountain National Forest. Split into the southwest and central areas, GMNF has a total of eight wilderness areas. These were designated by Congress beginning with the Wilderness Act of 1964 to be areas off limits to mechanized gear down to and including bicycles.

I made a pot of coffee โ in percolator andthen cooled it in the sink and put it in the freezer to make it cold. While not super hot today, I kind of prefer my coffee cold this time of year. On iced coffee per se with all the sugar but still cold and refreshing with milk ๐ฎ is always good.

On this day in 1969, the $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 bills are officially withdrawn from circulation. ๐ต After this date, if you wanted to buy a large purchase in cash or bribe a politician, you needed a lot of hundred dollars in bills. They had last been printed in 1945, and were finally dropped from circulation in 1969, in part as an effort to reduce corruption and money scams. ๐ I just remember that time I was walking during lunch and two men were handing off a big stack of hundred ๐ฏ dollar bills ๐ฐin an alleyway. I’m sure they were just buying a car or something and it wasn’t some mid level bureaucrat taking a bribe. Shit doesn’t happen like that in Albany, which is America’s most ethical capital.

It looks like the muggers will be with us all week ๐ฐ with humidity and the dew point well in the sixties and real muggy come Friday. For now my plan is stick close to home but I could change my mind. I’ve been thinking about going to the Potholers for some time now but it’s a pain with Piseco Powley Road still not open on the southern end.
Before it gets too hot this morning, I am going to go for a morning walk ๐ถ and then take a quick shower and get down to work. I think my plan for today is to work in the Green Mountains ๐ป and maybe hit the swimming hole a few times and then head home after work, assuming it’s not raining too hard for unsafe driving ๐. It’s been a fun week but I don’t want to camp in the pouring rain ๐ฆ which it looks like we are right on to get a direct hit from Tropical Storm Fay here in the Green Mountains. I keep finding litter ๐ฏ around this campsite which I keep picking up. Some people are pigs. ๐ฝ I know that when I camp, anything that doesn’t completely burnt gets packed out for recycling. โป I don’t put aluminum or glass in the fire pit and while I may burn out cans to clean them of food residue, I always clean out the fire pit and remove the cans and any unburnt plastic or similar residue. I bury my poop ๐ฉ and I try to leave wood at the fireplace and tidy up the site before I leave. Nobody wants to see or smell your pile of poop or deal with your garbage. ๐ฎ
On this day in 1890, Wyoming is admitted to the United States as the 44th US State. Kind of a hot day but until later in the afternoon the heat wasn’t that bad. ๐ฐ I could always hop in the Deerfield River if it got too hot plus I had the fan blowing on me most of the day while working. Busy day at work but I did get to hit the swimming ๐ hole a few times. Cooled off enough to have a little fire.
One of the locals mentioned that there is a place up the road that sells firewood ๐ฅ something I’ll have to keep in mind for future visits. I was able to cobble together enough wood for the fire plus some camp garbage I had to burn.
