New York State mapped and discussed, using Census data. Lots of interesting infographics can be found here.

GINI Index by NY County

The Gini index is a measurement of the income distribution of a community’s residents. This number, which ranges between 0 and 1 and is based on residents’ net income, helps define the gap between the rich and the poor, with 0 representing perfect equality (everybody has about the same income) and 1 representing perfect inequality (some are very rich, some are very poor).

Percentage Of Population 80 Years Or Older Per NY Census Tract

People when they reach 80 years old often require more medical services and assistance getting around. This map shows which Census Tracts have percentage of the population over age 80. Areas that are red and orange have a very high percentage that is over 80, while blues and greens have much fewer people over 80, as a percentage of the population.

Median Cash Assistance

Traditional welfare, aka Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA) is a very modest benefit to very poor families, typically with children, to provide them with a few thousand dollars each year in funds for basic necessity. This map shows the average TCA benefit per census tract for those who receive cash welfare. TCA is relatively difficult to get, which is why in many Census Tracts the data is unavailable or the sample size is too small to be reliable.

Percentage Of Population Recieving Food Stamps

With SNAP aka Food Stamps being in the news, I thought it would be interesting to do a map showing what percentage of people in our state in each Census Tract have received SNAP benefits in the past twelve months.

NY Percent Of Households Heating With Natural Gas

With the current shortage of natural gas in Western NY, I thought this would be an interesting graph to share, showing which parts of the state are heavily dependent on natural gas for heating. Natural gas is the most popular heating fuel in urban areas, as it's one of the cheapest sources of energy for heating. Western NY uses a lot more gas for heating then the Eastern half of the state, which has been traditionally more reliant on heating oil for heating. Manhattan and Bronx still use more oil then gas, while the outer boroughs tends to be more connected into the gas grid.
