Building technologies I’m skeptical about  – high roofs

Most houses are multi-story buildings. There is actually a good reason for this – it’s more energy efficent to have multiple floors as heat rises, and most heat loses are through the roof – the more roof per square foot you have the greater the building’s energy lost even with insulation. The most efficent building actually is square,  with multiple floors built upwards to minimize roof size per square foot.

But multi-story roofs involves ladders and more difficult maintance, even if they do involve less roofing material and losses of heat. Painting on a one story building can be done with little more then a step ladder. Putting solar panels on a high, multi-story roof makes it even more difficult to maintain the roof without professionals and careful use of ladders.

I do find the maintaince aspect of a single story building to be quite attractive, though the downsides of more roofing material and heat lost probably make a two story building make more sense. A small cabin with a bedroom built into lost – maybe 1 1/2 stories with a long-lasting metal roof and ground mounted solar panels might be the best option, even if I’m skeptical about multi-story roofs and having to climb up on the roof with ladders to preform ordinary maintance.

Maybe I could leave for vacation this weekend… But I’m not ready 🏖️

Big Red is getting the wheel bearing replaced on Thursday. There is good chance it will be ready come Thursday afternoon if not certainly Friday. But I have nothing packed in the truck, and honestly I just want some time to break things in after getting it back from the shop lest there is any issues.

Maybe a week from Friday I’ll leave for vacation, though the second weekend would be NASCAR Weekend at the Glen, 🏎️ and I don’t want to be anywhere near the Glen that weekend, though if I was up there the week before then and had camp set up, I would at least have a place to say, 🏕️ and I could spend the second weekend in Trumansburg or Ithaca, avoiding the craziness of race weekend.

We will see, a lot depends on the weather. ☀️ If it’s going to be warm and sunny, my truck is working good and I have the jack back together, then maybe I will leave next Friday. Otherwise, I am strongly leaning towards the last week in August through Labor Day, September 1st. It’s not that far off and it’s something to look forward to.

In the meantime, if I have my truck back 🛠️ I might head to Schoharie for a quick overnight to swim 🏊 and get produce in the Schoharie Valley this weekend 🌽 🍅. And then in the first half of August, maybe  do that trip up to White House I am thinking about for blueberries and maybe one more trip up to Potholers to dodge the heat. 🏕️ Who knows, a lot depends on the weather. The one thing that gives me pause about a summer vacation the last week of August is the risk of Hurricanes disrupting the weather. 🌀 I don’t want to be camping in a hurricane, even a reminence of a hurricane could be quite wet ☔ out camping.

This morning was eggs 🥚 and a lot of cooking with beans and rice cooking down on the stove. 🧑‍🍳 I want to boost the amount of protein in my diet, and brown rice and kidney beans are one of the most affordable and healthy ways to do it. 🥩 I know eating red meat is supposedly manly but I don’t want to become a fat fuck again, 🤰 and I noticed some stretch marks on my arm after having a few beers 🍻 and not doing much last weekend with the hot humid weather and my truck being broke down, awaiting repairs later this week. I fucking wish I had called the shop earlier on, but I didn’t have a clear idea the wheel bearing was dead until driving home on Friday, before heading up to camp. 🏕️

Continuing to wrench my bike 🚲 with the front derailuer but it’s good enough to get me to work now without clicking or dragging, though I still don’t have the shifter working properly. It’s kind of frustrating for sure. I just can’t figure out how properly adjust that front derailuer. I will never buy another bike with a front derailuer I tell myself. In the mean time I may end up taking it to a shop if I can’t figure it out. Or maybe see if I can attend one of those clinics at the Troy bike rescue. I might upgrade to a better mountain bike next year, that is once I get the new truck. Definately want a bike rack for the new truck, as I did some damage to the bike letting ride sideways in the bed of my pickup on top of the gear. It would be good to have a really pro-mountain bike especially for my trip out to the Midwest next year. 🐮
