Stoney Pond State Forest

The 1,469 acres offers visitors an opportunity to view a range of different flora and fauna.

The 44 acre Stoney Pond was constructed in the late 1950’s to provide wildlife habitat. Populated with largemouth bass and panfish, it is home to blue herons, Canada geese, mallard ducks and other waterfowl. A parking area and boat launching site is located on the pond. No gas powered motors are permitted. A day use area is located adjacent to the ramp.

Camping is allowed at 17 designated campsites and requires a camping permit between May 1 and September 30. These sites are varied. Two sites are accessible only by foot and are for tent camping. Most of the sites are nestled among a white pine plantation at the south end of Stoney Pond. Each site contains a fire ring. A latrine services the camping area. There is no water well.

13 mile-long Stoney Pond Nordic Ski Trail is an important part of multiple use management of the forest. The trails wind through both natural forests and plantations and around Stoney Pond. Most trails are designed for skiers with a beginner or intermediate skill level. Caution must be used for safe, enjoyable skiing. Snow covered trails may contain hidden obstacles or hazards. Skiers are responsible to ski safely and under control at all times.

Beautiful day in Cazenovia

Absolutely beautiful day today in Cazenovia. Deep blue skies, warm breeze, a tinge of dairy air like any autumn day in the country – a mix of silage and manure you can taste on your lips like any back roads in Upstate NY farm country.

November 6, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Going to be a beautiful day for sure. Next Friday is Average Night Below Freezing 🌌. Sunny and 53 degrees at the Stoney Pond State Park. 🌞 There is a southwest breeze at 10 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 44 degrees.

Heading to Cazenovia to work from the library Wi-Fi πŸ“š and then maybe head to Lakefront Park 🏞 on this most beautiful, warm November day. I have a 11 o’clock meeting so I’ll need to be down there by mid day. Then I want to be back to camp before dark. I want to park in the sun so I can recharge my batteries as much as possible before the long night is upon us again.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 65 degrees at 2pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 4th. Maximum dew point of 46 at 12pm. Southwest wind 9 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 49 degrees. The record high of 73 was set in 2015. 3.2 inches of snow fell back in 1933.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:47 am with sun having an altitude of 31Β° from the due south horizon (-39.5Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 4:09 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (241Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (249Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:50 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 5:18 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:53 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 64 degrees. The dew point will be 46 degrees. There will be a west-southwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 45 degrees at 6am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 2nd. Southwest wind around 9 mph. In 2019, we had clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of 18 occurred back in 1962.

The days are short πŸŒƒ but with the warm nights, I an sure tonight will be quite pleasant by the fire, assuming that I have enough power. πŸ’‘ It sucks my lantern isn’t working properly but I’m hoping to park in the sun to recharge my batteries today. πŸ”‹

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 68 degrees at 2pm. 17 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 27th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 11am. West wind 6 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 1938. 4.5 inches of snow fell back in 1886.❄

Should be a great day on Saturday. ☺ I want to poke around the trails at Chittenango State Park and a few other places and enjoy them as much as possible before it starts to get dark again. Nights sure are long this time of year but I guess that means more time around the campfire. πŸ”₯

Looking ahead to Sunday, sunny, with a high near 68. 🌞 West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. Maximum dew point of 48 at 3pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees.

Sunday morning I have to take down camp β›Ί as my three nights will have expired. I am going to head home as Monday will be busy and Tuesday is meetings day downtown at work. 🏒 It would be nice to see mom and dad on Sunday too.

As previously noted, next Friday is Average Night Below Freezing 🌌 when the sun will be setting at 4:41 pm with dusk at 5:11 pm. On that day in 2019, we had cold, mostly sunny and temperatures between 26 and 14 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 49 degrees. We hit a record high of 69 back in 1964.

I wish the president would accept the legitimacy of the elections. πŸ—³

It’s fine to be an assertive candidate and an advocate for your party but you should accept the results and not be advocating conspiracies when even the preponderance of the evidence suggests that you are wrong.

There is a lot of appeal to being a bit brash a times and being an advocate for tearing down and replacing a broken system. But ultimately we are a nation of laws and the president can’t be above the law and he should respect the law.
