Balsam Swamp is a sprawling state forest that stretches almost 5.5 miles east-west across 4 towns. The area is very rural, and the landscape surrounding the State Forest is predominantly forested. Balsam Swamp State Forest is comprised of a mix of native hardwood forests, hemlock swamps, and conifer plantations. There are no designated recreational trails on the forest, but there is ample opportunity for self-guided day hikes to explore the diversity of habitats represented on this State Forest. Additionally, the western section of Balsam Swamp State Forest is adjacent to Five Streams State Forest to the south.
The main attraction of this forest is Balsam Pond. The impoundment is approximately 152 acres and is a popular destination for fishing and paddle boat sports. Balsam Pond is a warm water fishery that contains a mix of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, brown bullhead and sunfish. Tiger muskellunge have been stocked in the past with the last stocking occurring in 1995. However, there have been very few reports of anglers catching any of the adult tiger muskies. A shallow gravel boat launch is suitable for launching small fishing boats.
A small rustic camp ground is also located at Balsam Pond. Camping spaces are available at no cost on a first-come, first-serve basis and there is no running water or electricity. A fire ring, outhouse, and picnic table are provided for each camping space. A sign on Balsam-Tyler Road in Pharsalia designates the entrance to the boat launch and camping facility. This is a carry-in carry-out facility. Please do not litter.
A good day for staying home, doing some reading and some cleaning. Maybe some thinking and writing about where I am currently, now that’s I’ve put my house and land search on ice, I’d say suspended it but I’m still going to keep learning, will keep my eye on Landwatch and Zillow and keep my options but I think my preferred option is now focused on early retirement.
Good afternoon! Started out as snow, turned to rain, and now looks like it’s more freezing rain and 32 degrees here in Delmar. ๐ง๏ธThere is a north breeze at 5 mph. ๐. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ ๏ธThe skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.
I honestly thought it was just going to be a rain event locally. ๐จ๏ธ I was wrong. It’s really much more of a mixed bag, a lot of slop locally but now I’m watching the trees ice up. They’re getting a fair bit of snow up north, but I think with the warmer temperatures next week, maybe some will be left up north prior to camping but it won’t be a major hindrance as most should melt this weekend. ๐๏ธ I confirmed that For the Love of Bacon is going to be open on Good Friday, so I can get bacon ๐ฅ prior to camping. Yum. ๐ I won’t buy store bought bacon but as an occasional treat, farm bacon is great.
This afternoon will rain or freezing rain before 3pm, then rain and sleet between 3pm and 4pm, then rain, snow, and sleet after 4pm. High of 35 degrees at 2pm. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 13th. North wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime ice accumulation of 0.3 to 0.5 of an inch possible. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 80 was set in 1938. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2020.โ
Thursday knocked my derailleur badly out of alignment fighting the wind heading home, didn’t discover until Friday commute. ๐ฒ Couldn’t even get it into high. Ended up driving in on Friday but it’s fine as I brought in a better desk lamp and one of my re-potted plants. Had a root rot issue or maybe over fertilization. ๐ฅ Wasn’t a difficult adjustment, took five minutes with a hex key but I didn’t have time on Friday to adjust. When the rain stops I’ll take for a test ride to verify. I ended up getting an inexpensive stick lamp for my desk at work ๐๏ธ because the lamp shade on the old lamp I found in the closet was falling apart. Lamp shades were close to same price, plus that old lamp I found in closet kind of was on it’s last legs. This new lamp is super bright with the 200-watt LED bulb, and the not aged-plastic on the lamp shade.
Solar noon ๐ is at 1:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 48.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-22.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). At one point I had more ambitious plans for today, ๐งน but I really should spend time cleaning in my apartment, especially the bathroom. And I want to do some reading, this time not about real estate, building a house or land. ๐ ๏ธ It was fine when I was doing it, but it became a bit overwhelming to say the least. I’m not going to stop learning, but it’s not going to be primary focus now that I’ve moved that goal into my retirement years when I can have lots of land and in live in a state that shares my values. ๐งญ I wanted to make New York work, but I just don’t see the state’s values as being consistent with my own.
This afternoon I am thinking if the library opens I’ll go down there for a while to get on the internet, ๐ฅ๏ธ and maybe drop off my Early Voting Ballot to the Early Voting site. Totally voted for Dean Phillips, as I think we need new blood in government, ๐ซ even if the 79-year old Joe Biden has nomination locked up. If I don’t get it done today, ๐ณ๏ธ I can do that tomorrow when I run to the grocery store for my weekly shop already — can you believe tomorrow is already Sunday? ๐I am thinking Thursday I may take half a day off from work and head up to Adirondacks before rush hour ๐ , although if the weather is bad, I think I’d be better off to go up early on Good Friday, maybe doing a hike in the morning. ๐๏ธ
Tonight will snow, mainly before 8pm. ๐จ Low of 21 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 29th. Northwest wind around 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2023, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 0 occurred back in 1875.
Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Arbor Day ๐ณ when the sun will be setting at 7:52 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy, patches of fog and temperatures between 62 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.
People keep warning if I put off what I want to do until tomorrow, it will never happen. And I will regret it. I push back, noting:
You have no regrets once your dead.
Regret is something you have in the twilight hours of one’s life. Something you have when you realize there is little time left, not enough to do all the things you want to do in your final hours of living. Still I get that someday never comes. If you put off something for tomorrow, you should have a solid plan for doing it tomorrow and be making steps toward tomorrow, or it will never come.
It would be a struggle to walk away from one’s highest earning years of their lifetime, in a job I truly enjoy. At the same time, alternative half measures, like the ones I’ve been contemplating seem to be at best half measures and in many ways inferior to way things are currently. All the best evidence suggests I should wait, take my time, use caution, but not procrastinate. Build things in my mind, continue my research, save and invest. Work to grow my skills and my ability, excel at my job, be the leader I am destine to be.
Maybe I’ll end up running out the clock. That’s a risk. But also there is a lot of reward towards waiting, and not giving up all I’ve built as I move into my prime earning years.
Second rent check is on the way to the new landlord via auto pay. It’s working out fine, this is the least expensive, most flexible living arrangement.
Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Mostly sunny โ and 21 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 11 mph. ๐. The current wind chill is 9. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ Starting out real cold for late March, the heat is back on. Things will start to thaw out at around noontime. ๐ก๏ธ
Slept until almost six o’clock this morning, ๐ at which point I got up and made up coffee โ and some good hardy pancakes ๐ฅ with blueberries and pineapple ๐. Kind of a cold morning, I turned the heat on for a bit and enjoyed my time under the heated blanket. Should be a better day for riding to work but still cold but somewhat less windy. ๐ฒ
Today will be mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 37 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 20th. Northwest wind 5 to 11 mph. The record high of 81 was set in 2012. 7.0 inches of snow fell back in 1887.โ
Yesterday was super windy ๐ฌ๏ธ riding back home, but it was excellent cardio. โฅ Sweet potatoes ๐ and a fried onions with corn with turmeric was dinner last night. ๐ฝ Then I went upstairs, read ๐ and wrote ๐ a bit for the blog. There’s been a lot to think about these days. At one level I feel like a failure walking away ๐ฃ from building a house ๐๏ธ but it wasn’t going to end well building I’m New York. If leaving immediately was a good choice, I would take it but it’s not. So I’m just going to stay the course for now. I’m not giving up on the dream, I’m delaying it until I have the necessary resources.

There is some profound happiness in finding closure โบ and reverting back to my original plan of moving out of state at retirement or possibly sooner. Age 55 at this point isn’t that far away and it’s a destination I can get to. ๐ก The whole house search thing was kind of silly, I told myself that I could live with being in New York State but I knew that was a profound lie ๐คฅ I told myself. I want to keep on my savings path ๐ฆ, continue my education ๐, work hard and produce results in the meantime. The whole house search things really got started when I was super jealous that the head of programming I work with has a house in Westerlo. Stupid reason and it’s not me.
I do need to be more open about who I am but I face profound rejection for being who I am in the community I currently live in. ๐คทโโ๏ธ I get what people mean by coming out of the closet when many don’t fearing both the personal and legal โ ramifications of being true to oneself. Some of the ways I want to live in activities I want to participate are serious criminal offenses in New York State even if they are perfectly legal and commonplace other places. ๐ฅ ๐ซ ๐
Tonight will snow and sleet likely before 3am, then sleet likely between 3am and 5am, then freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet after 5am. ๐จ Low of 30 degrees at 1am. This weekend is certainly starting out wintery. โ๏ธ I think it’s the final last blast of winter at this point. Hoping for better weather for the Easter holiday weekend next weekend ๐ฐ and actually a little snow on the ground in the Adirondacks is not a bad thing come next weekend as it reduces the fire ๐ฅ risk. I’m so looking for a few nice nights in the wilderness. โบ
Tomorrow will rain or freezing rain, becoming all rain after 7am. ๐ง High of 38 degrees at 11am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 2nd. Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 40. โ North wind 13 to 15 mph. Definitely a pretty bitterly cold day. Typical average high for the weekend is 48 degrees. I’m hoping for better warmer weather next weekend to spend in the Adirondacks.
One month ๐ from now will be Earth Day ๐ when the sun will be setting at 7:47 pm with dusk at 8:15 pm.
Often scientists intentionally confuse politics with provable scientific fact. Just because one option involves less death and destruction, doesn’t neccessarily mean it’s the option to choose. All costs must be weighted.
I am still planning on riding to work as I like the exercise and with the sun it won’t be that cold if I am fully bundled up. Erie Boulevard will be a refrigerator, but by the time I figure I will have worked up a bit of a sweat and be warm enough. The ride against the wind will be good cardio. The afternoon commute will be more difficult, climbing the hill in the face of the wind, but if all else fails, I’ll ride down to the Old Train Station and catch the express bus home from there.
Good morning! Partly sunny and 23 degrees at the Delmar, NY. ๐ Breezy, ๏ธ20 mph breeze from the west-northwest ๐ฌ with gusts up to 31 mph ๐จ๐จ๐จ. The current wind chill is 9. Things will start to thaw out at around 2 pm. ๐ก๏ธ
Finished up the first 5 chapters of the Power Broker, ๐ though I’ve been skipping around a bit as I miss a few sections when I fall asleep listening to it. ๐ง๏ธ I want to catch up on the parts I missed before returning it, maybe tonight. Listening to the Power Broker is one of many ways I’ve been procrastinating later, as to avoid my anxiety about my housing situation. ๐ฉ That and scrolling through Facebook and complaining about how anxious I am and how I’m avoiding doing research. Maybe because I’m undecided.
Today will be mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 34 degrees at 4pm. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 8th. The record high of 78 was set in 1921. 6.0 inches of snow fell back in 1905.โ
More fillbustering last night. ๐ I decided to bake two loafs of bread, one with lots of herbs and spices and other with canned pumpkin, ginger and pumpkin spice and a bit of stevia for added sweetness. Both were baked this morning, after rising in the oven overnight. It’s funny, I think the mice have managed to chew a hole through the rotted oven insulation and firebox, but I have no evidence that they’ve made it up the oven walls to nibble on the rising bread overnight. The two loafs of bread were delicious when baked this morning.
I don’t know why I fear information so much. ๐ It doesn’t cost anything to watch Youtube videos or read library books about buying land and building a house. Maybe it’s not the option I ultimately want to do, but research will make me a more informed consumer if I’m not hiding from it. ๐งญ I just got to be very careful about giving my information to sales people, or the harassing phone calls and emails were start, every day. ๐ At least the mortgage officers have abandoned me for now, as I’ve expressed no further interest since them running the credit checks and submitting the paperwork for pre-qualification and most of it for pre-approval.
Starting to learning about some of the downsides of modular construction ๐ namely how it doesn’t necessarily increase in value, which is good for you when it comes to the taxman but not so much if you plan to sell it. The speed and simplicity of permitting is a big upside, but the downside is the quality of building materials can be less, though often modular buildings have better insulation and fewer air-leaks. Plus far less of a risk of theft of materials on site. But that got me thinking more about whether or not I want to stay in New York State and if I really want the long commute. ๐๏ธ It’s not like it’s that long before I’m eligible for early retirement at age 55 — 13 years, 10 months, 8 days. The winter of 2011 was further away then that. To build would tie me to New York beyond that date.

All I can say it’s a hell of a situation that I am in these days. โค๏ธ๐ฅ Every dollar I spend today is one that takes away from tomorrow, it’s stealing from my future. The thing about it is I am still living in that dumpy apartment that I’ve had since graduating college, 16 1/2 years ago now, even though I have that swanky office and good salary, that I’ve worked hard to obtain. 13 years and 10 months and 8 days isn’t that long, and it’s a chance to advance my career more, save more money and increase my pension. Then at age 55, I am free to move to a place like the Ozarks of Missouri where I’m free to have whatever fires I want ๐ฅ and have lots of money for land and stock ๐ฎ and really build a nice off-grid house, without the somewhat large budgetary restrictions I have. If I have $250k to build now, I’ll probably have a $1 million to buy land and build then, which goes far father outside of New York or any metropolitan area. And then to keep busy, I can find a job shoveling shit ๐งนor something along those lines for the health insurance.
Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐, with a low of 19 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 22nd. Maximum wind chill around 19 at 6pm; Northwest wind 13 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Pretty damn cold. I am going to have to turn on the heat I am afraid. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1875.
Nothing has happened with my neighbor’s garbage pile ๐๏ธ except some paper litter blowing along my door stop, but I haven’t been able to talk to him about it as he usually leaves before sunrise and doesn’t return until late into the night. I don’t care if he were just to get some trash cans, or stick in his car. At some point I would imagine the slumlord would notice. We should talk more but he works really long hours. I’m just up early, because I choose to go to bed early, ๐ but he’s up early to work.
Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐ Saturday, rain and snow, becoming all rain after 11am. High near 42. South wind 6 to 13 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 42. Typical average high for the weekend is 48 degrees.
As previously noted, next Thursday is Average High is 50 ๐ธ when the sun will be setting at 7:18 pm with dusk at 7:45 pm. On that day in 2023, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 53 and 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 85 back in 1945.

There are 2.1 million acres of state forest in Pennsylvania, not including the Allegheny National Forest and various state parks. The largest state forest is Sproul State Forest, followed by Susquehannock State Forest and Elk State Forest.
