Balsam Swamp is a sprawling state forest that stretches almost 5.5 miles east-west across 4 towns. The area is very rural, and the landscape surrounding the State Forest is predominantly forested. Balsam Swamp State Forest is comprised of a mix of native hardwood forests, hemlock swamps, and conifer plantations. There are no designated recreational trails on the forest, but there is ample opportunity for self-guided day hikes to explore the diversity of habitats represented on this State Forest. Additionally, the western section of Balsam Swamp State Forest is adjacent to Five Streams State Forest to the south.
The main attraction of this forest is Balsam Pond. The impoundment is approximately 152 acres and is a popular destination for fishing and paddle boat sports. Balsam Pond is a warm water fishery that contains a mix of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, brown bullhead and sunfish. Tiger muskellunge have been stocked in the past with the last stocking occurring in 1995. However, there have been very few reports of anglers catching any of the adult tiger muskies. A shallow gravel boat launch is suitable for launching small fishing boats.
A small rustic camp ground is also located at Balsam Pond. Camping spaces are available at no cost on a first-come, first-serve basis and there is no running water or electricity. A fire ring, outhouse, and picnic table are provided for each camping space. A sign on Balsam-Tyler Road in Pharsalia designates the entrance to the boat launch and camping facility. This is a carry-in carry-out facility. Please do not litter.
Good morning! Cool but sunny start to the last weekend of September π.
How fast time comes and goes. Been so busy all month long but I did manage to get out of town twice this month.
Sunny and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. π There is a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. π.
Cool but clear this morning π but that’s what one would expect. I’m sure it’s even colder up north. Out for my morning, and then I plan to drive out to Westerlo and meet my parents for a trip in the Belleayre Gondola. π‘ They are packing a picnic π lunch and it should be nice, assuming it’s not too frigid atop of Belleayre. π₯ͺ
Not a lot of color at this point, even in the mountains which is part of the reason I didn’t plan to head out of town this weekend. π But it will be a great family trip! πͺ I had originally planned to go up north, but Sunday isn’t looking that great, today is cold and I have some questions in my mind where or not my truck needs service before I head out of town for any longer trips. πͺ
Out for my morning walk πΆβοΈ which is good because I’ve fallen so far behind when it comes to steps this past week. It’s just be so rainy and I’ve been working late. π¨πΌ Then by the time I get home I’m often tired. And the mornings are so dark. But I need to try harder and get more steps in. Especially when I end up eating so much junk food when I’m in the office late at night. Before you know it, the sidewalks are going to be icy and that winter wind is whipping around with the sunset at 4:30 PM. π£ I got to do better though before I get fat. π¬
I want to spend some time cleaning this evening 𧽠as I’ve noticed things are getting kind of dingy and dirty in my apartment. Definately could use some sprucing up after the summer that came and went. Well maybe that’s something I can do in the evening. I don’t think it will be too crazy of day riding a gondola with my parents.
That wind makes it cold. I am kind of glad I decided against going up to the Adirondacks this weekend. It would have been pretty cold. But its going to be a fun trip tomorrow with mom and dad, riding the gondola at Bellayare, taking in the colors.

Made it to a Friday. π It’s been such a busy week, but I’ve found time to do some learning π even if walking has been more of a squeeze for time. β³ Work has been non-stop. π£ Next week I’m hopeful I can get in more steps, or so I tell myself. Some of it’s been the weather, a lot of week has been quite rainy.
Rain today, β I probably should have worn my rain coat but it will look silly later on when I head home and it’s sunny but cold. π
57 degrees and a strong wind, despite the sun, will feel cold after the summer that didn’t seem to want to kick the bucket until it did. π¨ Saturday is going to be windy too. Going to be tough on the leaves where they’ve started to brown up and fall, but at the same time, in most places it’s really too early for autumn to be fully underway. That said, I do like the cooler weather but it will be still warm enough to have the windows open but I might want to think about more long sleeved shirts and the hoodies to wear around. π
