Balsam Swamp is a sprawling state forest that stretches almost 5.5 miles east-west across 4 towns. The area is very rural, and the landscape surrounding the State Forest is predominantly forested. Balsam Swamp State Forest is comprised of a mix of native hardwood forests, hemlock swamps, and conifer plantations. There are no designated recreational trails on the forest, but there is ample opportunity for self-guided day hikes to explore the diversity of habitats represented on this State Forest. Additionally, the western section of Balsam Swamp State Forest is adjacent to Five Streams State Forest to the south.
The main attraction of this forest is Balsam Pond. The impoundment is approximately 152 acres and is a popular destination for fishing and paddle boat sports. Balsam Pond is a warm water fishery that contains a mix of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, brown bullhead and sunfish. Tiger muskellunge have been stocked in the past with the last stocking occurring in 1995. However, there have been very few reports of anglers catching any of the adult tiger muskies. A shallow gravel boat launch is suitable for launching small fishing boats.
A small rustic camp ground is also located at Balsam Pond. Camping spaces are available at no cost on a first-come, first-serve basis and there is no running water or electricity. A fire ring, outhouse, and picnic table are provided for each camping space. A sign on Balsam-Tyler Road in Pharsalia designates the entrance to the boat launch and camping facility. This is a carry-in carry-out facility. Please do not litter.
Proponents are calling for closing off the public lands because of over use… ๐ฒ๐ฒ ๐๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ ๐ฆ ๐ฆ
I believe the radical environmentalists who want to destroy our country are the greatest threat to public lands. We must fight back against those who want to lock them up and close them down and ban public use. Public lands belong to the public not the radicals!
We need multiple use lands and managed forests supported with funding by timber sales, oil and gas production and leased grazing rights. The philosophy should be greatest good for the greatest number over time, as public lands belong to the public.. We should adopt the philosophy of the Gifford Pichot and the US Forest Service.
Lately, the ideology of the radicals has been to find every thing in the forest preserve that is broken, every mud puddle, every filled up parking lot and put it on an 8×11 photograph and post it on the internet and create these reports that they send to the politicians insisting that public lands be closed down and that public access to limited or completely banned. Ignoring the fact that most of the public land isn’t shown on the frame.
If there is a problem with litter, then state should hire more people to remove litter and put out more garbage cans. It used by most parks had garbage cans, and they dumped the garbage in a gravel pit. Not every garbage pit is Love Canal. Is it really necessary for the state to haul every piece of back country litter two hundred miles to a designated landfill when for generations old cans and wrappers were buried in nearby sand burrow pits?
If trails are being worn out, then they should have more staff repairing trails, bring in more gravel, more rock, and make more hardened repairs. The state owns thousands of acres of land which can be used to provide rock, dirt and timber for improving state facilities. Build new trails and parking areas to spread out impacts.
The solution shouldn’t be closing off, locking up and hiring more jack booted thugs every time an area gets heavy use compared to the under-sized, under built infrastructure when the state has so much in natural resources that could be exploited for public benefit.
Use it or loose it as it sometimes come down to vacation. It’s a three day weekend beyond the two I’m taking off. The solitude time away from the internet and radio news will be nice even if more of the weekend will be spent under the tarp by the heater then out swimming ๐.

Last week, the Albany Police ๐ฎclosed down Washington Avenue between Dove Street and Eagle Street, ostensibly because of the Poor People’s Campaign protest as the Fort Orange Club, even though the protesters weren’t actually blocking the street.๐
I liked how the street closure made it easy for pedestrians to cross the street, to get on with the business of the day, visit the bank, businesses and other state offices. ๐ขIt also seemed to reduce noise and air pollution.๐๐๐ I can understand how the street closure was a pain for motorists and bus riders — it would have been a short walk to Lark or Eagle Street to catch the busย — but it also made Downtown Albany more livable and enjoyable.๐ถ
I think the city should consider closing down Washington Avenue between Lark Street and Eagle Street during weekdays,๐ especially in the summer, when people are out and about getting lunch and crossing the road conducting their business.๐ผ
Seems like the most appropriate John Prine song for this Flag Day 2023. I was going to post it Memorial Day being the irreverent SOB that I am but whatever. Loving America is also about criticizing it when our leaders are wrong. But what do I care, I’m leaving this town come tomorrow morning for the Adirondacks.
Good morning! What day is it? Flag Day, of course. ๐บ๐ธ At least in the parts of America that still celebrates such things. You can taste the wood smoke, cow shit and heavy fog ๐ซ around 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. It’s kind of nice when you live enough on the outskirts of the city to have the smells of the country. ๐ฎ Calm wind. The dew point is 51 degrees. The AQI is 43. The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.
Woke up at 5:30 this morning and had reheated egg quiche ๐ฐ with coffee โ. Went out for my morning walk ๐ถ and came back home and ran to the bathroom ๐ฝ and splattered shit all over the toilet and my boxers. They were fun to wash this morning. ๐ฉ I almost thought about tossing them as they don’t really fit anymore. In my rush to get out to the Bike Rescue ๐ฒ last night I decided to have the last chicken patty I had left in my freezer from before I decided to cut out processed unhealthy food from my diet. ๐ I think it might have already gone bad or maybe I’m not used processed food, though I had it with plenty of beans, celery, onions and brown rice to supplement it. But it left me hungry and feeling sick ๐คฎ for the rest of the evening. It had a ton of salt in it and pretty high on fat too. My gut doesn’t like change, I had a similar situation when I first started eating a lot of oatmeal and fiber rich foods. I still don’t feel great but I think I’m past that now all cleaned up and showered. ๐

I drove down to the Trinity Center last night in the South End ๐ฒ, hoping to get some advice on rebuilding the back wheel of my old bicycle.I was still hoping for some advice on the wheel, but when I got there, the door was locked on the Trinity Center and the lights were off. ๐ช I walked around back to see if I missed, then moved my truck a little closer, deciding to double check that nobody was there, ringing the door bell but nobody arrived. Maybe they didn’t have volunteers, that happens, they’ve been closed the past few weeks. ๐คทโ๏ธ
It’s fine, I decided I’ll bring the rear wheel to the Adirondacks this weekend and play with it some more. I am starting to doubt though that I’ll ever get this bicycle back on the road, ๐ณ as I keep discovering new issues. The thing about it was when I was unloading my bicycle I noticed my front wheel is now out of true, among other issues. But I do want to learn how to replace spokes, and learn more about bicycles. ๐ I got two books out of the library about bicycle repair, ๐ฉ๐ง and I want to learn more about bicycles before I plunk down money for another used or rebuilt one. I think I will continue to cannibalize parts from this bicycle, and eventually donate it somewhere, but the mean time I can store in the crawl space. But next time I’ll call or email in advance โ๏ธ before going down there.
It’s fine, I needed to get propane, some supplies from Walmart and fuel for my truck. โฝ All much too expensive but I wanted to have everything I need for the trip, including an new air pump to inflate my tube or in case of emergency, a little bit of extra rubber cement to patch any leaks, some more kidney beans, olives, and a few other groceries. ๐ช Going to get fresh veggies and fruit on my way up to camp, probably stop in Gloversville at Price Chopper to get those things. Often the quality is better then Walmart, and it will be hopefully more fresh shopping on Thursday. But more expensive. Everything has gotten so darn expensive these days. ๐

Heading out of town for a Long Weekend starting on Thursday morning. ๐ I was going to take off Friday and Tuesday, but it looks like the legislature will be back on Tuesday, so I best be back on Juneteenth. Plus Thursday looks like one of the best weather days of the long weekend. Friday looks cold and wet. I am going to bring my propane heater, along with the tarp for sure. It will be nice to be away from it all for some time. My radio doesn’t work, so I will be fully off-grid without cell service. ๐ Hoping for some sun for swimming and to keep hte solar working well so my batteries are good.

On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 70 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1938. That means the Mine Kill Pool should be open then ๐ so if it’s nice that’s a lot of fun. But next weekend is a way off and I want to look at bicycles that weekend first before deciding if I want to go swimming. But also it would be great to get some fresh produce at the farm stands in the Schoharie Valley, do some camping and adventures not so far from home.
I mean it’s good that we are finally getting caught up on the rain and the mountains are starting to look super green again after last night’s rain. Still I wish it would stop and get hot out for the holiday weekend for swimming up at the Potholers. I guess every weekend can’t be beautiful.

This morning I have black beans simmering on the stove. ๐ฒ Out doing my morning walk ๐ถ, I got a fairly early start and I already plan to double check and make sure the beans are done before leaving for work. ๐คฏ I actually want those black beans for a cold lunch today, they are perfect ๐ with a good chopped red onion ๐ง like the type they have at salad ๐ฅ bars. I am chewing over what the best days to head out of town. ๐ I was originally planning on taking off Friday and Tuesday for the long weekend, as I want to get up to Piseco-Powley Road early enough to get the House Pond Campsite if at all possible. But now I hear a rumor that there may be session next week, so maybe I won’t be able to take off Tuesday. Thursday now looks better.
Looking ahead, next Tuesday is Primary Day ๐ณ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. I’m not sure if that’s right, it might be the following week? Not sure but there is no Democratic Primary in my town so nothing for me to do except maybe make maps up after the Conservative Highway Superintendent primary results, although with such low turn out unlikely to be very interesting. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 82 and 47 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1953.
I still got my big ol six foot flag hanging out at my place in the burbs though soon I plan to take it up in the woods camping for the long weekend. Might need to take it in though on flag day as it’s expected to rain, which is very much needed. And the fact it’s Trump’s 77th birthday come Wednesday, it’s a reminder we need fewer geriatrics in the White House.

I’m up and going this morning ๐ด though not as early as I would have hoped as my sleep is seriously messed up from all those late nights at work and I simply didn’t get to bed ๐ by nine like I should have been and went down memory lane ๐ญ remembering those olden days of Macintosh System 7 and the promise of Copeland. ๐ฅ I’m glad I use open source software these days as it’s less likely to be abandoned, witness things like GNU FORTRAN all these decades later.

Back to work today ๐ข but things should be relatively quiet now that session is over once I figure out this cap grant on my desk that was really puzzling me on Friday. Tomorrow I want to go to the Albany Bicycle Rescue after work ๐ฒ to get some advice and help on rebuilding the wheel on my bicycle. I figure it either will be helpless and not worth repairing, or I will get some tips. I briefly checked out the used bicycle sale at MadDog though I didn’t stop in but if I can’t fix my bike, I want to get rid of the old one by donating it and then buying a new one, by the end of the month.

It will be a great summer. That is if it ever warms up again and the legislature doesn’t come back for a, summer session which will happen at one point or another. Okay, today will be in the low eighties but they’re talking about highs in the 60s and 70s for mid June. I don’t think we’ve had a real hot and muggy day yet this year. Hit ninety a couple of times but with very little humidity. Then again I’m not as well insulated as I once was.
Good morning! Partly cloudy and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ Calm wind. The dew point is 52 degrees.
It’s a pretty nice morning. ๐ I’m out walking ๐ถ as usual, have a pot of red kidney beans on the stove simmering down. ๐ฒ I was actually studying all the different types of beans they have at the store including some of the soup mixes. I’ll have to do some bean soup come the winter, especially if I avoid too much salt and fats in it.
