The Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area is a 5,100 acre upland tract, situated approximately eight miles west of Dansville, New York. Roughly two-thirds of the area lies in southern Livingston County, while the remaining third lies in northern Allegany County. The tract was purchased in the 1930’s under the Federal Resettlement Administration and is one of several such areas turned over to DEC for development as a wildlife management area.
The area is appropriately named after the Timber Rattlesnake, which may be occasionally found in the more remote sections of the “Hill”.
The area offers an interesting blend of upland habitats such as mature woodland, overgrown fields, conifer plantations, old growth apple orchards and open meadows.
The area is inhabited by a variety of game species and is open to public hunting. The white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, grey squirrel, cottontail rabbit and woodcock are found on the area. An occasional snowshoe hare may be observed adjacent to thick creek bottom brush or conifer plantation habitats.
A number of small marsh units have been developed and provide limited hunting for waterfowl. Some of the area’s furbearing species such as mink, beaver and raccoon may be occasionally viewed at these marsh units.
Yesterday, I twisted my ankle a bit but I’m feeling better this morning but I skipped my evening walk and early morning walk. But since getting in on the bus, I have walked a mile and are feeling better. I replaced the boot laces on my boot and laced up the boots tight and things are getting better.
Mostly cloudy and 32 degrees in Delmar, NY. β There is a southwest breeze at 11 mph. π. The skies will clear around 7 am.
Yesterday I got my steps in π£ even after my ankle started bothering me mid-day. Somehow I managed to twist my ankle at my desk. But I got in more then 12,000 steps, taking a midday walk and limping my way home. It is feeling largely better now though with the tightly laced boots, I managed to get in a mile plus walking around the plaza. But I am taking it carefully but I want to also get the 10,000 steps in today. But I don’t want to do at the cost of potentially spraining my ankle. π¦Ά
Other then that I basically went home, had dinner π½ and went to bed pretty early π€ as I wasn’t going to do a lot of walking, and just was hoping things would heal up and feel better by morning. So far so good. I am going to try to get in a few miles walking at lunch time, and then take it from there. Kind of sucks because walking is something I enjoy doing, and getting my steps in but I’ll do the best I can do. If it’s bad this weekend, I will rest up my foot but I’m not going to rush to doctor, as it’s not that painful or sore at this point.
Sunny but cold with the wind the next few days going into the weekend π¬οΈ
Southern Zone deer π¦ hunters are going to like that assuming they play the wind. Going to really snowy β in Buffalo and the Tug Hill, probably not going to do any trips up that way for a while. Still might warm up after Thanksgiving though. π¦

Looking at the radar this morning I decided it was a good one for a walk in the darkness as the rain and sleet kept pouring down. It’s not raining that hard I tell myself.

I could be camping π I tell myself. I remember the sleet and rain we got when I was camping at the East Otto State Forest six years ago this week. Got a propane leak in a hose, sprayed my self with stinky propane.
But regardless I’m up and going. β I could have done breakfast first but I actually like to walk first thing, than have breakfast. I did have a cup of coffee with some hot cocca mixed in before heading out. Sunrise is getting later especially on cloudy π¨οΈ days like today. Time change helped for like a week.
In 1947, the United States voided all of the Nazis patents and put all their non sensitive technology and research into the public domain for all to use without restriction.
This was actually a very big deal – the Nazis had some of the world’s best scientists – and their development pushed forward computing, electronics and audio recording enormously.
I don’t think the snow will stick around for long, it’s already quickly disappearing in Albany. The heavy rain from this morning has let up, now it’s just everything is damp outside. Continued cold into the weekend, for the first time this winter we will be talking about the windchill going into the weekend. So be it I guess.

Good morning! What day is it? GIS Day, of course. πΊ
While I wasn’t planning on it this rainy, sloppy morning I decided to walk down to the express bus as it wasn’t raining that hard.
Rain and 34 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. β There is a northwest breeze at 6 mph. π. There is a inch of snow on the ground. β οΈTemperatures will drop below freezing at around 9 pm. βοΈ
It snowed for a while last night before turning to rain. π¨ Kind of just a sloppy mix. Probably the snow will be completely gone by afternoon. But no ice locally though last night the driveway was a bit slippery.
Went down to the library π mostly to return books but also because I had my laptop π₯ home and figured it would be a good walk down to the library.
It’s GIS Day so I guess I’ll have to think of some creative ideas on maps to make up. πΊ I am sure there are things I can come up with pretty easily using a few lines of R code. Or maybe I’ll actually open up QGIS and make something real purty. For a while I was doing the #30DayMapChallenge but it became too much work.
