Rattlesnake Hill WMA

The Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area is a 5,100 acre upland tract, situated approximately eight miles west of Dansville, New York. Roughly two-thirds of the area lies in southern Livingston County, while the remaining third lies in northern Allegany County. The tract was purchased in the 1930’s under the Federal Resettlement Administration and is one of several such areas turned over to DEC for development as a wildlife management area.

The area is appropriately named after the Timber Rattlesnake, which may be occasionally found in the more remote sections of the “Hill”.

The area offers an interesting blend of upland habitats such as mature woodland, overgrown fields, conifer plantations, old growth apple orchards and open meadows.

The area is inhabited by a variety of game species and is open to public hunting. The white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, grey squirrel, cottontail rabbit and woodcock are found on the area. An occasional snowshoe hare may be observed adjacent to thick creek bottom brush or conifer plantation habitats.

A number of small marsh units have been developed and provide limited hunting for waterfowl. Some of the area’s furbearing species such as mink, beaver and raccoon may be occasionally viewed at these marsh units.

December 21, 2022 Morning

Good morning! Mostly sunny and 16 degrees at the Rensselaerville State Forest. β˜€ Calm wind. Without the wind it feels much warmer. It’s actually a beautiful day with the sun. There are 15 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 6 pm. 🌑️

While last night was a bit cold with the wind, πŸ’¨ today is absolutely beautiful, β˜€ a good day to get away for two nights and do some skiing 🎿 on the snowmobile trails when most people are at work. I’m off this week but with the cold weather and the rain and snow coming I figure head home Thursday. Reading the news πŸ“° I picked a good week to be off, though in my current position I don’t have to deal with so much of that silliness.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high around the freezing point at 2pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around January 15th. Light southwest wind. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 2018. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 2008.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:56 am with sun having an altitude of 24.1Β° from the due south horizon (-46.9Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 3:42 pm with the sun in the southwest (230Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:27 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 4:58 pm, which is 28 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:35 pm. At sunset, look for mostly sunny skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 30 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 3 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 16 degrees at 9pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around January 11th. Maximum wind chill around 12 at 11pm; West wind around 6 mph becoming east in the evening. In 2021, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1955.

Cold for Christmas Weekend. β˜€ ❄ Christmas Eve, partly sunny, with a high near 14. Sunday, for Christmas going to warm up to 17 degrees with lots of sun. But not a white Christmas 🀢 after Friday’s rain unless you count the salt on the roads. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees.

As we head into winter the days start getting longer, and by next Wednesday we have the 4:30 PM Sunset πŸŒ† when the sun will be with dusk at 5:02 pm. On that day in 2021, we had mostly cloudy skies with freezing rain showers and temperatures between 46 and 31 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1982.

December 19, 2022 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 29 degrees in Delmar. πŸŒ† There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. πŸƒ. There are 6 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 1 pm. 🌑️

Launched my new blog theme, which I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, πŸ€” since after my experience in the free coding camp, which taught me a lot more modern coding techniques like CSS3+4, ES6 javascript and modern HTML. A lot of the code on my blog was kind of a mess, it was good to try to clean things up, especially as since I moved over to PHP7 things were kicking up hundreds of errors on the back end due to not always testing array keys before calling them. ⌨ I decided I am tired of all full-screen pictures and particularly how slow they can load a times. Kind of a throw-back to an older blog look but using the latest in HTML codes.

This was kind of a stay at home day, 🏘 as I have this week off from work and I did not sleep well and wasn’t feeling good for a lot of the day. I’ve been continuing to work on my free coding class, πŸ€– deep in the bowels πŸ’© of Redux which is a Javascript-HTML library for building high-speed interactive apps like your favorite email program and social media program. I don’t love it, in part because I doubt I will ever use it, but it’s good to expand my horizons, and know about it because all the cool kids are using it.

Later in the afternoon I went down to the library, πŸ“š and uploaded the latest version of the blog theme ⏫ and then went out for my evening walk. 🚢 With my boots falling apart and leaking badly, πŸ‘’ I’ve not done as many steps as I should. I should either order or go and get some more boots but I’ve been procrastinating a lot lately.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌀, with a low of 20 degrees at 6am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 25th. Merry Christmas, lol. πŸŽ… Think of all that colorful wrapping paper Santa will bring to burn. 🎁 Maximum wind chill around 15 at 5am; Northwest wind 7 to 9 mph. In 2021, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 15 degrees. The record low of -19 occurred back in 1951.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 33 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around January 5th. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 32 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1957. 8.4 inches of snow fell back in 1975.❄

I am thinking about going winter camping tomorrow β›Ί ❄️ before the real-cold weather blows in on Thursday into Friday. I am thinking two nights hot tenting, not too far from here, but I am still a bit worried about the snow being so deep, and how much I would have to shovel out — and if the roads will be icy. 🧀 I guess I don’t have to decide right away, and indeed I probably will just pack the bare minimum for hot tenting, as anything I don’t use at least food and water-wise will most certainly be frozen by Thursday. But at least it should be cold enough to keep things from getting all melty. Or if I wait to New Years Eve, then there might be less snow come the rain on Friday.

Before that though, I do need to think about going to the grocery store. πŸͺ I keep finding things to eat around home, but my pantry is quite depleted at this point, especially as I planned to go shopping on Wednesday at lunch time during my work-at-home day, which became plans to go shopping Thursday for both myself and the then-canceled Christmas Party at work, πŸŽ„ which then was going to be after the snow storm, which then became Monday after I visited the folks, which didn’t happen. 🚽 I do need toilet paper, so I really should think about doing that.

Today in 1974, Nelson Rockefeller is sworn in as Vice President of the United States πŸ‘”  under President Gerald Ford under the provisions of the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Very cold for Christmas Weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, Christmas Eve, partly sunny but ball-chillen cold with a high near 23. Christmas Day, sunny and cold with a high of 26. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees. I hope Santa doesn’t freeze off his you know what. πŸŽ„

Looking ahead, next Monday is Boxing Day πŸ₯Š when the sun will be setting at 4:29 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. On that day in 2021, we had mostly cloudy, mild, rain showers and temperatures between 42 and 34 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1895.

Weather Update – December 16, 2022

The big dramatic snowstorm is here 🌨

Big whoop, whoop, whoop, look at the high temperature locally. But it’s supposed to cool off later. Maybe I’ll leave work early. Certainly going to take the local to work and home, so I’m not trudging through the slop. I had the option to work from home, but I didn’t want to use more of my hotspot data up, especially as I’m off all day next week, plus working in the office gives me more of an opportunity at lunch time to get at least some of my steps in by walking the Concourse and the Museum inside. Much too icky to walk outside, unless things freeze up, and then it will be icy.

At least after the rain, ice, snow slop mix, it should warm up this weekend, which should hopefully keep the ice from accumulating too much. And maybe it will be gone in a day or two. That would be nice, especially if I have next week off and want to do some skiing or getting around without microspikes.

First half of the week doesn’t look too bad for winter camping, assuming I’m prepared to deal with snow and get a snow shovel to dig out a parking spot.

Daily Update – December 16, 2022

Good morning! Happy Snowy Tea-Party Day. 🌨

Maybe today is a good day to be dumping tea into the harbor after all. With the rain, snow and fog, the authorities probably aren’t going to notice you dumping a bunch of source-separated organic matter into the Boston Harbor. But who knows what the weather is like in Boston. We certainly aren’t getting the heavy snow they’re getting out in the hill towns.

Rain and sloppy snow and 35 degrees in Delmar, NY. ❄ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around noontime. β˜ƒοΈ

My last day of working before December 27th. 🀢 I have next week off, and then I’m back for that four day week after the Christmas break, as the other director has that day off. Yesterday I also had off, and Wednesday I worked from home. It’s kind of nice to have some off before the end of the year is done, and I am still going to loose some time that I can’t roll over to the new year.

Yesterday Big Red got inspected πŸ” and got his new sticker with no issues, although the trail hitch is rotted out. I try to cover things with oil and keep the truck clean but it’s tough, after going through 11 winters, heading into the 12th one now. I don’t know how many more years Red has left, but he’s paid for and I am doing smaller trips, and certainly during the winter I don’t drive much. Last year, I doubt I even did 6,000 miles throughout the year, preferring to stay closer to home.

My hope is to get out camping for a few days next week, πŸ• it will definitely involve a shovel, a hot tent and skies. Probably just a local state forest like Rennselearville State Forest or Cole Hill State Forest, dragging gear back on a sled. I would have preferred to go out to Brookfield, but I doubt I could find parking. I could call the DEC Office in Sherburne to see if they plow out any of the area around the horse camp for snowmobilers — they might and drag gear back to the horse camp, and set up a tent there, but I might just stay local.

I do need to get a snow shovel. ❄️ I was off work yesterday to go shopping but then with the independing snow storm they canceled the holiday the party, and I decided after my car inspection, there was no need to go out as I had enough food and supplies. I am not that worried about having too much snow to need to dig out at home, as the landlord takes care of the driveway and gives me a very weak, shitty plastic shovel to clean the steps off in front of where I live. But I think it will be mostly a rain event in Delmar. I also didn’t want to rush to the store before the snow storm, lest they jack up prices or not have any shovels in stock. Maybe on Sunday or Monday I’ll get one, especially if I make up my mind where I want to go.
