The Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area is a 5,100 acre upland tract, situated approximately eight miles west of Dansville, New York. Roughly two-thirds of the area lies in southern Livingston County, while the remaining third lies in northern Allegany County. The tract was purchased in the 1930’s under the Federal Resettlement Administration and is one of several such areas turned over to DEC for development as a wildlife management area.
The area is appropriately named after the Timber Rattlesnake, which may be occasionally found in the more remote sections of the “Hill”.
The area offers an interesting blend of upland habitats such as mature woodland, overgrown fields, conifer plantations, old growth apple orchards and open meadows.
The area is inhabited by a variety of game species and is open to public hunting. The white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, grey squirrel, cottontail rabbit and woodcock are found on the area. An occasional snowshoe hare may be observed adjacent to thick creek bottom brush or conifer plantation habitats.
A number of small marsh units have been developed and provide limited hunting for waterfowl. Some of the area’s furbearing species such as mink, beaver and raccoon may be occasionally viewed at these marsh units.
It always makes me nervous but why I don’t know as Big Red is running well and AFAIK all the lights are working good. Oil change and tire rotation too today. Let the shop get all of those things done at once. I’ll just take off the hub caps.

Up at 5 AM to have breakfast of eggs, onions, rice and corn and other veggies. π¨π³ The burner element failing this morning was a surprise as it arc flashed when it cracked and shorted, but I’ll replace the burner either today or this weekend. Last night I fried up sweet potatoes with onions and veggies with some left-over turkey from Thanksgiving. π¦ Finishing up that bread I had made up on Monday, I will bake a new loaf tomorrow morning along with cookies for work, and maybe that spaghetti squash. π Squash is really cheap at Hannaford this week, and I have $5 in points rewards expiring on Friday so I plan to go to Hannaford when I pick up my truck this afternoon.

I forgot to ask for synthetic oil but I’ll ask when I drop the truck off. π’ Doesn’t matter that much I don’t drive much in the winter. I used to do my own oil changes but by the time I got the oil, struggled to remove the oil filter it wasn’t worth it. Then I’ll walk πΆ home and get down to work. While cooking π³ this morning the large burner quit working. No heat then it started to arc a bright white color where it broke. Should also replace the catch basins on the stove too, they’re pretty burnt through again. π« Figure anytime I call the landlord he’s ultimately going to tack it on my rent so I don’t call unless it’s dire. π΅ My apartment needs a lot of work but it’s inexpensive and I want to keep it that way for as long as possible. π‘

As I do from time to time I check my net worth and retirement accounts. π° They’re up 33% from three year ago in November. Not the pandemic low but things were still down a bit. I’ve been expanding my bond holdings in recent years but it’s really the stock that have been high flying β these days.π That said, I do share people’s concerns that the stock market is overvalued, especially the high-flying seven corporations that dominate the S&P 500 but the way I look at it is while they may go down, and even the market may have a substantial correction, other stocks will be replace them eventually and ultimately the index will grow. I still think broad-spectrum indexing is the way to grow, along with regular steady automated purchases, without regard to any trend. Spread out the risk, stock funds, bond funds, broad-sector funds. I’ve lived through times of up and down on the market π — I am bad and don’t look at much at the market when things go down, but then again I don’t really act on any short term trend. Combined with my better paying job out in the suburbs, I look forward to a brighter tomorrow. I just want to build a secure future for myself, with so much instability in the world today.

Took the later local bus home last night π as I was working on that rush project. Gets me home a half hour later then I would otherwise get home. Not a super big difference, dinner was done by seven and I went out for a walk before coming home to a warm glass of milk with cinnamon and ginger and retiring to bed. β If I take the free shuttle back the plaza with my new job, I’ll be taking the bus home more often, but if I decide to take the Purple Express to downtown, I can probably catch 519 home at the regular time, though that will cost an extra $1.30 a day. Works out to an additional $300 a year, though my new job will pay far more extra then that. But I don’t know, I like saving money, and the free shuttle drops me off in the Plaza which I can spend the half hour getting steps in at the Plaza where it’s warm. I got options to mull over.
Back in 1962, NASA launches Relay 1, the first active repeater communications satellite in orbit. π°οΈ Nowadays when you look up at night you occasionally see Starlink and that’s quite an impressive amount of satellites in the sky. I’ve heard it’s great for those who live in remote areas and need high speed internet. It’s expensive but if it provides work and puts food on the table it’s pretty neat.

I am excited about my new job and moving forward with my career. I continue to learn and refine my skills and look forward to a better tomorrow. At the same I am quite content with the year that was – had a lot of good adventures, been feeling great and healthy. Discovering how to eat and cook well really was a game changer, I feel good much of these days.
In a weeks more days my fortieth year comes to a close. One year closer to Mission Fifty, the plan to develop myself into the person I want to be at age fifty. I’m not there yet but moving my career forward, constantly learning, eating healthy and exercising is getting me closer. I continue to learn and explore owning my own land and those days are getting closer, one step at a time.
What can I say. Adding that vital wheat gluten to my whole wheat bread added some extra fluff and it really made things less crumbly with much better texature. I’ll see how it holds up over the next few days, as I slowly slice off slices to dip in soup, make french toast and enjoy dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

There is a closure through the Empire State Plaza tunnels due to a water π¦ main β break which might cause delays but I don’t care I’m not driving π and it’s not a big deal if I’m a few minutes late. Looks like the driver is taking an alternative route through the city to avoid traffic. It’s not like next year when I’ll be transferring to the shuttle π bus out to the suburban office. I do miss riding in on my bike but not with the cold and wet rain. π² Tomorrow I’ll be back riding to work. January is going to be tough on the biking, due to the cold and inevitable snow on the trail, not to mention it’s not safe to be riding Water Street after dark in the evening.

Adding the vital wheat πΎ gluten to my 100% whole wheat bread added a tad bit more fluff to the bread but it didn’t make it as light as white bread. π Did make things stick together a lot better though for better slicing and texture. I bet it will hold up better in my bean soup.π I’ll have to experiment with different amounts of yeast again but ultimately whole wheat is going to whole wheat. I wouldn’t say though it’s a flat bread as it was much more fluffy then what I had. White bread might be a lot more fluffy but it’s less healthy. I guess a reasonable compromise might be whole-white wheat, which is whole grain but the white wheat rather then the slightly more protein rich red wheat.

Today in 1997, The Kyoto Protocol opens for signature. π The US would never ratify the agreement, and while some countries would participate, it was a lot of talk and not a lot of action. Every year the earth gets a little bit warmer and it ain’t because I drive a big jacked up truck π» or burn those Styrofoam egg cartons I stuff in my trash and ultimately the fire. π₯ Seriously though we are making some technological progress but things are still going in the wrong direction as the population increases and every year we burn more fossil fuel.

Good news! Last night was the earliest sunset of the year in Albany. Sunset was a 4:22 PM yesterday. Today the sunset will be about 25 seconds later, for a sunset time of 4:23 PM. Daylight will be added slowly everyday to the end of the day, starting at about half a minute, accelerating to about two minutes by the first day of spring.
To be fair, daylight will be decreasing every day until about December 20th and won’t start growing until December 24th but the loss is in the morning and not in the evening. In the meantime, the sun’s position relative to the atmosphere bending will cause later sunsets.
It was fun but I couldn’t get any traction at all climbing the hills. Granted I don’t have studded tires, but the hills were so slick with that mixture of sand and organic matter that is common on the hills around Delmar. After riding a short amount of trail I tossed my hands up and headed back for the road, and then rode out to Voorheesville. Road 15 miles today before coming home and having lunch — sweet potatoes fried up with peas and left rice-lentils from last week.
