The Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area is a 5,100 acre upland tract, situated approximately eight miles west of Dansville, New York. Roughly two-thirds of the area lies in southern Livingston County, while the remaining third lies in northern Allegany County. The tract was purchased in the 1930’s under the Federal Resettlement Administration and is one of several such areas turned over to DEC for development as a wildlife management area.
The area is appropriately named after the Timber Rattlesnake, which may be occasionally found in the more remote sections of the “Hill”.
The area offers an interesting blend of upland habitats such as mature woodland, overgrown fields, conifer plantations, old growth apple orchards and open meadows.
The area is inhabited by a variety of game species and is open to public hunting. The white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, grey squirrel, cottontail rabbit and woodcock are found on the area. An occasional snowshoe hare may be observed adjacent to thick creek bottom brush or conifer plantation habitats.
A number of small marsh units have been developed and provide limited hunting for waterfowl. Some of the area’s furbearing species such as mink, beaver and raccoon may be occasionally viewed at these marsh units.
I was a bit on the fence, but not being able to catch the earlier express in and walk the plaza due to riding late, I decided to ride to work. First time riding in to suburban North Albany, going to take the Delmar Bypass, then South Pearl Street to the bike path as I’m not sure how much snow is left on the bike path.
Good morning! Clouds, some fog and 40 degrees in Delmar. โ Calm wind. There is roughly an inch of snow on the ground. โ ๏ธWarm weather is continued to be forecasted for the next few days. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 8 pm. โ๏ธ
This morning was eggs with a lot of onions, broccoli, and other delicious things. I also baked carrot bread and also a loaf of onion bread and sweet potatoes in the oven this morning. The onion bread is saved in the freezer for later in the week. Last night I took some well freezer-burnt pork roast, cooked up with a lot of chunks of apples, vegetables, mushrooms and onions in a frying pan, added it bunch of spices and called it a delicious dinner. I am continuing to work on cleaning out my freezer one meal at a time, while developing well balanced, nutritious fiber and vitamin-rich meals. Made a second pot of coffee up as I was running late, though I’ve been cutting back on the amount of coffee I’ve been drinking at home as I can get it a work too.
Today will have a chance of showers or drizzle, mainly before 8am. Patchy fog. Otherwise, cloudy ๐ฆ, with a high of 45 degrees at 12pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 15th. Calm wind becoming north around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1938. 9.5 inches of snow fell back in 2000.โ
Obviously it’s still too dark in the evening to ride all the way home, but my hope is to ride down to the old train station — Peter Kiernan Plaza — and catch the express bus home from there. I think after President’s Day, assuming the rail trail is free of snow, I’ll be able to ride both ways to work on nice days. We’ll see how often that happens in February, though so far the first half of the month looks fairly mild.
Solar noon ๐ is at 12:08 pm with sun having an altitude of 28.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-42.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). Last night was cold and rainy, so I spent the evening cooking up the old pork roast I had in the freezer and then kneading bread for the morning. Then I went to bed a little after 8 PM, so I could enjoy the heated blanket. I wasn’t going to turn on/up the heat if it’s going to be above freezing. I have lots of good things to eat going forward the next few days, probably including more of the fabled pea soup that contains that old stewing beef. Hoping to finish much of that off tonight, and will freeze whatever remains. Then tomorrow night I’ll break out some old lasagna I had in the freezer, and fry that up with vegetables and seasoning. Probably use up the rest of the sweet potatoes that I baked up the other day. It comes out much better then reheated nasty, calorie dense mush from the microwave.
Tonight will rain, mainly after midnight. Patchy fog. ๐ง Low of 36 degrees at 3am. 20 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 10th. In 2023, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of -17 occurred back in 1920.
Continued mild and cloudy this weekend. Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Northwest wind around 6 mph. Sunday, a chance of snow before 7am, then rain and snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 37. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees.
Looking ahead, next Thursday is February ๐ง when the sun will be setting at 5:09 pm with dusk at 5:38 pm. Got an inch or so of snow last night but not until late, as most of the evening was just rain. Trump won New Hampshire, I spent the evening at the Colonie Town Planning Board with Save the Pine Bush. Another week, another warehouse in the Pine Bush. Walking this morning inside the Concourse.
Good morning! What day is it? A Sloppy Hump Day, of course. Rain, slop and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ There is a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. ๐ with gusts up to 20 mph ๐จ๐จ๐จ. I was hoping to get in early to walk the Concourse ๐ but it turned out the earlier express was running about 20 minutes. Obnoxious, I know. I did get some steps in walking the Plaza — ๐ฎ there were a ton of police there — probably some kind of protest today. But not as many as I wanted to get. Not fun waiting out in the rain. I though the real-time bus info was wrong ๐ โ but it wasn’t, and after a while I waited a bit inside, where it at least wasn’t raining and wet and miserable out like earlier. Almost wish I had driven in to avoid this crap, ๐ฉ but the hell with warming up my truck and digging off the ice and slush, when I bus that will do it for me for only $2.60 round trip. The shuttle is free to my suburban office, it’s just the fare to the Empire Plaza.

It’s a relative thing and indeed it’s going to cool off by afternoon and turn to snow and rain by evening. But I figure it should be a pleasant morning bike ride this morning, not so cold for a change. Makes up for the bone chilling ride yesterday.

Johnnycakes this morning ๐ณ with spinach and broccoli ๐ฅฆ topped with cottage cheese and nutritional yeast. No onions this time but jalapeรฑos and turmeric in the mix. Out riding this morning ๐ฒ, not so cold. Almost missed the express bus ๐ home though maybe I could have caught it at the Capitol or had to take the 18 home. ๐ก If that happens occasionally it’s not the end of the world. Ron was driving the shuttle yesterday and he was running late and the express was running early and there was a school ๐ธ bus and a lot of traffic on Erie Boulevard last night. The transfer is tight so I’m not surprised. ๐คจ Still I prefer it to driving ๐ especially in bad weather like tonight. But I’m looking forward to bike trail being snow free so I can bicycle ๐ฒ to work and not have to pay the bus fare.

I guess it depends on how cold โ it is when I get home if I do an evening walk ๐ถ though I would like to keep up that habit. I don’t want to walk in the rain โ but I’ll walk in the snow ๐จ. After such a lazy weekend I’m trying to boost my exercise program but it’s tough especially to do the cardio without the stairs of the office downtown. Friday I have training downtown so I can do the stairs then as I plan to spend the balance of the day in offices downtown.

I guess I’m getting old. But hopefully once my birthday comes and goes things will start to thaw out again. Winter can’t last forever, regardless of what a Pennsyltucky varmint says a week from Friday.

The hell with my hands ๐I’m going out riding. ๐ฒ It’s cold โ and my fingers might get swollen and stiff but I need to get some exercise as I’ve been lethargic all weekend with the cold and wind. Mom thinks I need better gloves ๐งค but I’m tired of having swollen stiff fingers. I’ll be fine once I warm up plus I like seeing the cows ๐ฎ and the rural landscape riding Meads Lane in the morning. With the rain and warmth coming later in the week it’s possible once again I will be able to ride work. โบ
Today will have increasing clouds โ ๐ โ, with a high of 33 degrees at 2pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around January 26th. I never used to have a problem with the cold โ but it bothers me a lot more these days. Says the boy who winter camps in an unheated pickup bed in January and goes for bike rides on eight degree days. But it never used to so damn painful. I mean I still keep my heat at 49 degrees in my apartment but I do like the heated blanket more and more but then again I sleep in just my boxers and an under shirt. ๐ฉณ But the cold does bother me a lot more.

As I mentioned the other day, my new office has coffee โ but not milk ๐ฅ and like it in my coffee. They have fake creamer made from whey and corn syrup but I much the real stuff from the teats of animals that go moo and smell like silage. ๐ฎ So I’m bringing in a mason jar into the office with milk plus cinnamon, ginger and vanilla for good drinking. They also have an ice maker in the new office which is perfect ๐ for iced coffee come the summer. ๐ง

I didn’t make bread this morning, ๐ but I probably will tonight knead up some dough for cooking in the morning. I figured skip the carbs this morning, plus I’m thinking stir-fry for dinner tonight. ๐จ๐ณ Also want to use up an older sweet potato I have before I risk it going bad. ๐ In breakfast I included some meatballs with the eggs I had to further clean out the freezer. Trying to use up the last of the less healthy stuff from last year so I have more room in the freezer going forward for healthier options going forward. Left to use up is two frozen grocery store meatballs, an never opened pack of Falvo’s Meatballs, and some fish sticks. Thinking of using the remaining grocery store meatballs and fish sticks in various meals this week. ๐ With lots of vegetables ๐ฅฆ and other healthy options.
Cloudy, mild andshowers this upcoming weekend. ๐ง๏ธ Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. Sunday, a chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 39. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. I am considering potentially doing a winter camping trip to celebrate my 41st birthday, but maybe not as things might be all mud ๐ท with all the rain expected. But certainly mild. I still think the best chance to get out of town is going to be Presidents Day, though I’m watching the weather before then. Still after the rain and mild temperatures, the rail trail should be free of snow and ice ๐ฒ for riding again.
As previously noted, next Monday is my 41st Birthday ๐ when the sun will be setting at 5:05 pm with dusk at 5:34 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 44 and 22 degrees. Not divisible by five, no carrot ๐ฅ cake ๐ for me at work but then again I had a going away, or at least going up to North Albany party two weeks ago and I still have cake in my freezer, lol. ๐ Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 54 back in 2002.
Been using VIM all weekend. Makes me a much faster typer, lol. Really once you learn and really memorize the key presses on the keyboard it’s hard to back. Add appropriate plugins like word completion and settings like syntax coloring and line numbering, master working with tabs and your golden.
I’ve turned in VIM mode in RStudio too. Once you learn it, it’s awesome. Editing is so fast as you rarely leave the core keys on your keyboard, except maybe for the escape key – and that’s the less used left hand. Going to try Vibreoffice plugin tomorrow to add a VIM mode to Libre Office.
That said, it’s only expected to last for a few more days. But expect high heating bills and bone-chilling cold outside for a few more days before things warm up a bit and turn to rain for the second half of the week.
Good morning! Clear and 9 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ Breezy, ๏ธ20 mph breeze from the northwest ๐ฌ with gusts up to 36 mph ๐จ๐จ๐จ. The current wind chill is -10. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. โ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 2 pm. ๐ก๏ธ
I can remember colder days, in years past, ๐ก but it’s been such a warm winter with El Nino and warming climate, I’m not used to feeling the cold or having the hit running so much. The electric blanket is nice and actually with the cold and heat running more, it seems warmer inside.
Today will be sunny ๐, with a high of 21 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -10 at 6am. Blustery, with a northwest wind 15 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. Yesterday was much less of an ambitious then maybe I had first hoped ๐ด though a lot of it was the cold and wind kept me indoors. I just get chilled through much quicker these days then I used to when I was younger. I also have only a 1/4 tank of gas left in my truck and 100 miles of fuel left โฝ and want to make it through another week before fueling up again. But I had plans, but they were never implemented yesterday. Truth is after I got shopping, I got studying the GNU coreutils and especially the text-editing functions to help advance my new career at work, then it was cold and I decided to hide under the covers and take a nap after having a big pot of pea soup with stewing beef and carrots. ๐ฅ
I did get Walmart and stocked up on $140 on groceries. ๐ The $80 in groceries I bought last week really didn’t go that far and I didn’t want to risk running out this week before the end of the week. When I run out of fresh fruit and vegetables, ๐ฅฆ ๐ I too often find myself reaching for other sweets ๐ฌ and sugars — or for that matter carbs. The best thing to do is make sure my pantry is well stocked and remains stocked. Unlike many people, I’ve not had problems with things going bad — I eat plenty ๐ and a large portion of fruits and vegetables I buy are frozen.
I don’t necessarily buy that fresh fruits and vegetables are healthier or better then flash-frozen, the later are significantly more affordable. ๐ The thing is I am running low on freezer space. Some due to how much ice blocks I have in freezer for camping ๐ง — which truth be told I don’t need right now but I keep there for thermal mass or in case of power loss. But I figure if I use them up some older, maybe less healthy stuff, then it will save money and provide good eats. With inflation, every little bit helps. ๐ธ Sounds silly but it’s true.

This afternoon I am heading out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. ๐ช I want to hike Bennett Hill this afternoon ๐จ but every time I hear the wind gust up, my mind is changed. Maybe it’s best to just stay home and work on some various projects before going out to see the folks. Tomorrow will be warmer, I can go for a bike ride before work ๐ฒ or at least walk laps in the plaza before work. ๐ And maybe an evening walk tonight, as the wind will hopefully die down this evening. Whenever I see the word adaquate in a law I have to laugh a bit as it’s a bit of a double entendre, in many ways a joke played on the public. Here’s dictionary definition – the one emphasized for the press release, the other for the judge.
1. enough or good enough for what is required or needed; sufficient; suitable.
2. barely satisfactory; acceptable but not remarkable.
Of course with the Supreme Court going to blow up the Chevron doctrine, maybe the definition of adaquate will become a much more wild thing. This game can be played in two ways, not always with the bureaucrats winning for good or bad.
I generally believe government is bad thing, too much in the thrawls of business and the more that citizens can do to cut down the government the better. I don’t buy the only alternative to big business is big government, I think they are on in the same page. Instead, I would rather see more power given to citizens groups and not for profits. But maybe that’s because I’m a libertarian who often votes for the green party.
