John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
Cloudy, damp and mild. Maybe about 15 degrees warmer then the first day of winter — things are trending milder then expected earlier on — but hardly a nice late spring day. 🌺 At least no heat required today, and maybe a few more nights sleeping with the windows open. Even with cooler weather expected, especially in the nights by mid-week, it seems like much of the coming week will feel like early April rather then mid-to-late May. Spring is Sunday.

Good ridden winter, although I’m well aware of the 8-14 day outlook that suggests the mild weather of late isn’t expected to last into late March and early April.
🌹🌻🌼Only 1 day remains until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼
Spring begins at 11:33 AM tomorrow. 🌷 Hopefully we will have sun, although it looks more like will be mostly cloudy to start the spring month. At least not excessively dry.
Cloudy and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁️ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Tuesday around 6 am. ☃️
Today looks like it will be kind of wet and gray day. ☔ Not as much rain as I expected, that will be good if I decide to go to the library later on. 📚 I might walk out to Five Rivers some point today, depends on how much rain we get but I don’t want to get stuck in a rain storm walking back home. 🐸 Or I might wait until Sunday to go out to Five Rivers.
I am thinking about some coding projects 👨💻 and trying to learn about new map-making techniques. Also been thinking about getting the soldering iron out and rebuilding the GPS-logger for my truck before the summer camping season, so I can have maps and logs of my summer road trips. 🏕 Although, maybe those trips will be somewhat abridged with the high prices of gasoline, ⛽ but ultimately you have to live. For now, until it gets nicer, I am pretty much staying closer to home, walking places or taking the bus.
The past few days I’ve gotten in over 15,000 steps a day, 🚶♀️ although with the weather today, I doubt I’ll be able to continue that trend. But it seems like with the warmer weather, it will be easier to get more steps in, especially on non-session days when I can walk before work, and then at lunch time.
Earlier this morning stumbling around, I got caught in the window shade cord, 🔳 and managed to fall on my knee, banging it up, and leaving myself kind of sore with a broken window shade. I am going to see if I can either glue the window-shade later on or maybe I can narrow the brackets. I still think I can get more use out of it. 🔧 I was annoyed that another thing is broken in my life. The good news though is that my repair to the trash can is holding up and I’m hopeful the JD Weld I put on my exercise bike will cure good 🚲 — I’m waiting to ride it for a few more days to get a good solid cure. Since that pedal broke on the bicycle I haven’t been riding it much over the winter, but I used to like doing that especially while watching Youtube videos I had downloaded. 📽
I was reading the town newsletter, and see now I have to have the cans separated from the plastic and glass for recycling. 🥫 What a freaking pain. ♻️ Fees have gone up to the point for recycling plastic and glass, it hardly saves money compared to putting them in a black garbage bag and sending them to the Rapp Road Landfill. $2 a bag for recycling glass and plastic separated out, versus $3 a bag mixed in with the garbage. 💸 Paper is $2 surcharge per car too. 📃 I guess the truth recycling really is becoming revealed as a valueless scam. ❗ If you want less garbage, you just got to buy less garbage, you can kind of forget about recycling these days. 🔥 Fire works too, but it’s kind of illegal, toxic and smells bad if you don’t have a hot enough fire. Need to move out to the open country, where nobody cares. 🐮 Recycling has become so damn hard lately with commodities prices so low. Even at work, nobody has recycling bins any more — you want to recycle, you have to haul your paper trash to a central trash can on each floor.
For a long time I’ve been very interested in alternative perspectives not available on the mainstream media. I often think that sources like NPR are very one sided, too quick to dismiss other perspectives by calling them fake news and propaganda. But often alternative sources have good facts about what is happening on the ground, even if they have a different take on events based on alternative values.
People are quick to dismiss things that they disagree with as fake news. But when people and organizations are trying to censor things like Russia Today, then it’s all the more important to read up about them and learn their perspective and what parts of the conflict their highlighting. Russia Today is particularly good at highlighting the hypocrisy of the United States and the west when it comes to ideals of justice and fairness, even if they rarely look inwards to the problems of Russia. Just because they turn a blind eye to their country’s own problems or evils doesn’t mean they are fake.
By the same token, I also read the NY Post and Fox News not because I embrace all their pro police propaganda or sensationalist crime stories but because I like to be informed of the issues that concern conservative minded politicians. Not because I’m a right winger but because I like to hear the full spectrum of news and pick out stories and perspectives that make sense based on the evidence. Previously, I would read Inspire, the English translation of the recruiting magazine of Al Queda to be informed on how the Taliban saw the world.
Reading the perspectives of the Russian government won’t brain wash you but will make you an informed citizen who is more understanding of the Russian society and culture. Understanding other cultures can help make you a voice for peace and an more informed person.
I can see the rain pushing in from the south on this Saint Patrick’s Day 🍀
Brought my rain coat 🧥 to work, probably will need it later or maybe it will stay to the south. Hard to tell, I’ve gotten mixed reports from the weather man. Saturday may be winter’s last stand with warmer temperatures well compared to freezing snow and most of the first week of spring expected to be mild.
The past few April months have been fairly cool but who knows this year. Early spring thaws can fool us into thinking spring is here when it’s not. 🐸 People in Pennsylvania though are reporting hearing spring peepers but so far I haven’t. That said, the mourning dove 🕊 by my open window was pretty loud this morning and the red winged black birds are back in mass.

Partly sunny and 46 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 7 mph. 🍃.
It was nice sleeping with the windows open. 🔲 Hopefully that won’t be long until that is the norm. Not a half bad morning to be kicking off our Saint Patrick’s Day 🍀 although it’s expected to turn to rain later, although mostly to the south. ☔ It will probably prove to be foolish to wear a rain coat this morning.
I tell you it was such a bummer to see how much prices have gone up 💵 since the last time I was at the grocery store 🛒but I guess it was it is. I got the things I need and I shouldn’t have to go anywhere or buy anything until the second half of next week. Cleaned out the tub drain and scrubbed the toilet 🚽, rubber cemented the trash can lid. ♻ At some point I’ll have to go to the transfer station maybe early April to get of the cans 🥫 and even some recyclable paper and plastic.
Yesterday I ended up getting in close to 20,000 steps 🚶 after deciding it was a pleasant evening 🌕 under nearly a full moon and it would be nice to go for a walk. I was up until 9:30, later than most nights but I slept in until nearly six 6⃣ o’clock.
The warmer weather has me looking forward to doing more traveling ⛺ and nights in the wilderness. With inflation so high, I’m thinking I’ll probably do fewer longer trips, and try to camp places where I can stay for several nights using the solar to keep things topped off. Ice can be a problem but I should be able to maintain things even in the hottest weather for three nights which is the limit on most campsites at any rate.
Often in the summer time I like to have hot dogs to eat. I usually get the super large package as I like to avoid trash and it saves money. But I swear with inflation the price has doubled since last year. Coffee prices are way up. I put thirty dollars of gas in my truck with hope that it will make it to April without needing gas. My truck is at 99,400 miles but with gas prices I’m starting to think it will be a while before it reaches six digits.
I try to keep my budget in check but with inflation these days it’s just difficult. I might have the big shots job with the corner office and it’s been years since I’ve eaten out besides an ice cream cone on vacation but I tell you each day it gets harder and harder to make ends meet. Markets are down and even safer investments like certificates of deposits and corporate bonds are loosing money with the high rate of inflation. I invest a lot each paycheck both for retirement and eventually owning my own land but every time I look things just get more expensive. At least it’s mild enough that at this point I won’t need much heat.
Statistically, I may be a lot better off than a lot of Americans but I really don’t feel that way with prices going up and goals seeming so far off when you look at land prices even in remote country for what many people would consider to be pretty run-down buildings and land. True, I might eventually be in the place where I can pay cash for it and no rent besides taxes but it still seems impossibly far off.
I don’t want fancy cars or vacations, or a big suburban house – just acerage where I can shoot my guns, have fires and burn whatever I want – have pigs and goats and livestock. Far away from the cities and the liberals so they can’t be telling me what I do with my land, even though I plan to be a damn good stewart of the land even if that means I don’t tickle their you know what.
A mixature of sunny and rainy days this coming week but then quite mild but somewhat cooler by the first day of calendar spring. But still the second half of March isn’t expected to be that cool with the sun angle so much stronger these days. Kind of a bummer that the nicest days are the work days.
