John Boyd Thacher State Park

John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

Daily Update – March 26, 2022

Good morning! Happy Saturday, final one of March ๐ŸŒท

Spring is coming or so we tell ourselves, they have the tulip gardens planted in Washington Park.

Partly cloudy and 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind.Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 5 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Made it to the weekend. โ˜บ I guess it really wasn’t that bad of a week though there was a lot of meetings and projects going on especially the second half of the week. But I expect a quiet weekend.

I decided to start the weekend with a walk ๐Ÿšถ out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿธ via Meads Road. ๐Ÿฎ I doubt I’ll see a bald eagle ๐Ÿฆ… this week but you never know. I get more steps in that way and it’s a pleasant morning.

Got an early start ๐ŸŒ„ although by my standards not that early a little after seven 7โƒฃ. The blue skies are expected to turn to rain ๐ŸŒง๏ธ by mid day and a fairly wet afternoon. I think I will skip getting another dress shirt in favor of just running to the laundromat mid week. ๐Ÿšฟ I can either wear a dress shirt twice or dig for an old dress shirt if I need to cover a day and I don’t have time to get to the laundry.

Did my usual evening walk and the spring peepers ๐Ÿธ were singing ๐ŸŽถ their song. Got dark early with the cloudy skies although truth be told I like to push dusk at the park ๐Ÿž to see more wildlife. Deer ๐ŸฆŒ and rabbit ๐Ÿฐ about, also heard the owl ๐Ÿฆ‰ and saw some red wing black birds ๐Ÿฆ which I know doesn’t surprise me or any one else in Delmar.

Had fish ๐Ÿ  last night and left my windows open ๐Ÿ”ฒ during my evening walk to air things on out. I like fish but I don’t like that fishy smell after you come back inside. I put the storm windows in as tomorrow I’m going to need the heat through Tuesday it looks. I’m hoping it’s the last time until October or maybe November now. Can’t believe the high on Monday will be around 27.

Three weeks until Easter weekend. ๐Ÿฐ I’m thinking that would be a good weekend to head up to the Adirondacks โ›บ but like anything it depends on the weather. I might take off a few days to tack on to that weekend.

Weather Update – March 25, 2022

Fog ๐ŸŒซ this morning, maybe some sun โ˜€ the clouds and ultimately rain โ˜” for the weekend

It seems like a broken record for the weekends lately but I guess it’s still March and not snowing ๐ŸŒจ. Did you see how cold Monday will be? That will certainly get the salt spreaders back out. But then back to the 50s and 60s later in the week at least during the day.

Daily Update – March 25, 2022

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday!

Partly cloudy and 40 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. ๐ŸŒฅ Sun is starting to peak out a bit. Fog ๐ŸŒซ around, especially in the city. There is a west breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 7 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I still haven’t turned the heat back on but I see the forecast for Monday with a high of 27, โ™จ so I know what that means. I think it will be in the teens by morning. That said, later next week โ˜€ sun in temperatures in the fifties and sixties.

While yesterday was quite dreary โ˜”, I did manage to get in 13,000 steps between the before work walk ๐Ÿšถ in the drizzle and an evening walk down at the park, doing lapses along the Nature Trail along the Phillipen Kill. ๐ŸฆŒ Saw several white tail and heard Nut Hatches I think ๐Ÿฆ and certainly by the time I was heading back home I heard the spring peepers ๐Ÿธ quite happy with the somewhat mild conditions and the rain. No bats ๐Ÿฆ‡ around last night, too cold.

Got milk ๐Ÿฎ before bed ๐Ÿ› and retired to my bed around eight 8โƒฃ. Not sure if when the evenings get longer if I will stay up later, probably though especially when it’s hot inside and starry โœจ and relatively nice out back. There is no reason why I need to get up at five in the morning in the summer although it might be cooler out then for a morning walk before work.

One of the people we were interviewing yesterday listed R Studio ๐Ÿ“Š as one of his skills on his resume. Apparently it’s a big thing in colleges these days, which is kind of neat ๐ŸŽ“ as I find it’s a very useful tool for analyzing data and making maps and graphs. ๐Ÿ—บ Well you know, I use it nearly every day to create blog content. For Census data and thematic maps and graphs its a wonderful tool. PANDAS and Python also gets a lot of use in college these days. I kind of wish I was younger and could have learned about such things in school.

I’m glad tomorrow is the weekend ๐Ÿ˜ because it’s been a long weekend. Four day session days and while only one day I stayed late the endless Zoom meetings ๐Ÿ“น and interviews were tiresome. You want to do other things during Zoom but then they yell Ferris Buehler. ๐ŸŽก I should get a dress shirt or two tomorrow but I kind of don’t want to spend money on gas โ›ฝ and it might rain for walking in the Pine Bush. ๐Ÿฆ‹

Weather Update – March 24, 2022

Rain and colder โ˜”

The one positive thing is no snow expected locally ๐ŸŒจ though I’m sure they’ll find an excuse to get the salt spreaders out one night and I’ll have to wash my truck.

Saturday I need to run to the store and get another dress shirt. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผI think I can combine that with a trip to get groceries ๐Ÿ›’and maybe a evening / night hike in the Pine Bush. ๐Ÿฆ‹ Looks rainy but sometimes a rainy day is a nice one for hiking if properly dressed.

Daily Update – March 24, 2022

Good morning! Happy Rainy Thursday. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

I have to admit today is kind of a crazy day to go for the morning walk but I tell myself it’s not raining that hard and I like my walk. Wakes me up.

Rain and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 7 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ.

Kind of a rainy โ˜” wet morning for the walk ๐Ÿšถ but ultimately I decided to go for it as I was up and going and I like to get my steps in. A rainy morning kind of breaks things up and it’s not icy although kind of a cold morning. If I get soaked walking it’s fine, I have a hot shower ๐Ÿšฟ and suit and tie waiting for me when I get home. ๐Ÿ•ด๏ธ

It might be cold and rainy but at least the sun โ˜€ isn’t in my eyes ๐Ÿ‘€. Truth be told, today reminds me a lot of those cold wet days I’ve spent in the wilderness. โ„ Rain is good reduces the fire risk. The next few days are expected to be quite wet.

That said, when I got home I don’t think I was soaked. ๐Ÿงฅ While I wore a rain jacket and are a bit damp, I wouldn’t call today a real soaker although early hours were definitely wetter. Bringing though my umbrella to work. Things are a bit wet, but I am sure they’ll be dry when I get home. On session days when I dress up for work, I wear the same clothes at home and while walking. I don’t care if I’m a bit grubby at home. I’m dirty hick after all with a big shots job.

Such a long day yesterday. ๐Ÿ“น Morning in person meeting followed by four zoom meetings. While the Zooms were relatively short, they dragged on to after 5 pm. I’m anti social, I prefer projects I can just work on and not endless meetings especially those when you have to pay attention and ask thoughtful questions. ๐Ÿ’ญ

Made it home at six 6โƒฃ and cooked up pasta for dinner. Not my favorite but it’s cheap and easy. Rain โ˜” held off long enough for my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ – I might have been able to walk down to the park for a bit but I saw the radar and didn’t want to get caught in the rain. I still haven’t turned my heat on yet but it’s only a matter of time. ๐Ÿธ I’m my book, if I can hear the spring peepers and it’s above freezing, too warm for the heat.

I was in bed ๐Ÿ› before eight 8โƒฃ not because I was tired ๐Ÿ˜ด but instead that heated blanket was warm with my heat being off. I like getting to bed early and getting up early around 5 am having breakfast at six o’clock and my walk ๐Ÿšถ around seven.

One of the things I’ve been working on is trying to build up my confidence and self esteem. โ˜บ Signing my tax form with Deputy Director and reading an article about how you can’t be happier when you make more than $75k some how just felt good, even while I watch as inflation eats away everything and gas prices are at record high. โ›ฝ I’m learning a lot in my new job, sometimes if anything the way not to do things and how endlessly long management meetings are. ๐Ÿค I know the skills I’m learning every day will translate into a better future, along with my constant saving and investing.

After some down days in the stock market, things are back up ๐Ÿ“ˆ and if I truly wanted I could get parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ and drive to work and have a nicer home or apartment. ๐Ÿ  But I want to save money so I can eventually buy my own land with cash if possible, and enough acreage to buffer against neighbors. I still live in the same place as I did a decade and a half ago, take the same bus, ๐Ÿš making nearly three times less than I do now. But inflation eats away at everything.

I continue to look at various properties on Zillow, ๐Ÿ˜ again not because I’m buying but I am just curious what is out there and for what prices. Of course the internet thinks I must be out in the real estate market, with all the advertising, but I’m just genuinely curious to learn about prices, taxes, and land.  In some ways, it’s just a confidence building exercise for me, a way to remind me that my future is not that far out of reach.

I was reading about this homestead south of Albany that raises pigs, cattle and other livestock ๐Ÿฎ that a few years back got into a bit of tizzy with the neighbors for homesteading in an industrial-zoned, rural neighborhood. Seems kind of silly. That’s why it’s so important to check things out before getting land. And having lots of land to buffer from your neighbors. ๐Ÿšœ ๐ŸŒฒ ๐ŸŒฑ ๐ŸŒฝ  I don’t really want to smell my neighbors pigs or burnt plastic in the burn barrel, but I want the freedom to raise my own meat that is delicious and not have to haul every piece of burnable trash to the landfill. That’s why it’s important to have land and buffer. Not to mention, if you have privacy, your neighbors can’t spy on how your managing your land, and your less likely to get into conflicts with neighbors or the government workers.
