John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

As they say, Memorial Day Weekend is dead. Just history now. Time to dig through the shit known as the big final week and then onwards to summer. At least I’ll have an air conditioned office rather than working out of my hot truck this week and probably won’t get home until the heat breaks.
Partly cloudy and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. β Calm wind. The dew point is 63 degrees. The muggers have returned.
Out walking πΆ at six thirty and I can already feel the humidity, although it’s not so hot out at this point. You can smell the freshly cut hay πΎ from Memorial Day Weekend. I don’t know the chances of rain β today but they can certainly get it bailed before the rain comes later in the week.
Yesterday I finally had some work to do π» so I guess staying home this weekend wasn’t quite as much of a waste as I was starting to think π€ with pretty nice weather. But I’m just waiting to get away and be off the phone grid for four days, laying in that truck intertube, floating down that lazy river.
# shapefile of Albany Wards, project to web mercator 3857 # calculate area of each ward, load Ward field as numeric # hide extra fields in shapefile wards <- read_sf('/tmp/Albany Wards.gpkg') %>% st_transform(3857) %>% mutate(ward_area = st_area(.), Ward = as.numeric(Ward)) %>% dplyr::select(Ward, ward_area)
# get median household income, re-project # to web mercator 3857 income<- get_acs( geography = "tract", state='ny', county='Albany', variables = "B19013_001", year = 2020, survey = "acs5", geometry = T ) %>% st_transform(3857)
# intersect income against wards # calculate percent of ward's area in each census tract # group back together as a single ward # create a weighted-mean of median household inco # rejoin back together with original ward shapefile income %>% st_intersection(wards) %>% mutate(percent_of_ward = (st_area(.) / ward_area) %>% units::drop_units() ) %>% st_drop_geometry() %>% group_by(Ward) %>% summarise(estimate = weighted.mean(estimate, percent_of_ward, na.rm=T)) %>% inner_join(wards, ., by=c('Ward'))
Here is what is produced, with geometry columns suppressed (exclude the last line above when you don’t need the other information for mapping).
Then rain showers, cooler and very pleasant for next weekend.

Unofficial start to summer and it’s going to be a hot one. The air smells like fresh cut hay πΎ and already the sun is beating down.
Partly sunny and 61 degrees in Delmar, NY. β Calm wind. The dew point is 55 degrees.
Out for the morning walk πΆ although later than many days as I slept in. Stayed up relatively late under the starry β¨ skies out and then woke up in the middle of the night. I got thinking a mapping algorithm I’m developing in R to impute election results down to the block level.
Yesterday after the morning walk π» I spent too many hours studying various algorithms related to mapping and aggregation and interpolation in R. I wanted to wait until 3 pm to start my paddle πΆ to Troy, as I would have the tide pushing me north on the way up there and then back to Albany.
It was a nice trip kayaking πΆ from Albany to Troy, first time I’ve done it since 2012. I think the river was cleaner, and by 6 o’clock there was very little traffic on the river. Water π¦ was very calm except for occasional boat π₯ wakes and at the end almost back to Corning Preserve a southerly breeze which against the current made things choppy. Arms are a bit sore this morning, haven’t done so much paddling in a long time. π
When the history books π are written this wouldn’t have been a bad weekend to head out of town although I heard like usual that the black flies π were terrible up north. But long weekends come and go so quickly.
I am thinking the weekend of June 9-13 would be a nice weekend to do an extended vacation weekend up north, βΊ depending on the weather. Evidence suggests either next weekend I will be working or dead tired after pulling too many all nighters at work. But maybe I’ll take the Thacher Park bus π there on Saturday. The following weekend is Juneteenth so Monday June 20th is a holiday too. I want to do some floating in the black rubber intertube, drink some beer have a big fire π₯.
High tide on the river is 4:46 pm in Albany. So that’s good to know if I’m paddling. Still not sure if that’s the plan. πΆ
Tomorrow will certainly be hot. π Same thing with the first half of next week but then cool for the weekend. But I’m not sure if I will be able to get out of town this weekend as I tend to think I’ll be working next weekend.
