Daily Update – June 10, 2022
Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday!
Beautiful morning but rain is coming tomorrow. Out walking laps on the plaza then it’s off to work. And then a raining weekend? Although now the forecast isn’t looking too bad.
Mostly sunny and 57 degrees at the Empire State Plaza. 😎 There is a west-southwest breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 52 degrees.
Out for the morning walk on the plaza. 🚶♀️ A nice walk. Yesterday, I managed to get in 12,000 steps which isn’t bad for having to run home and get my truck and not doing the mid-day or morning walks. Not a lot of wildlife down at the town park, although I have to admit I was paying closer to attention to my Zoom call rather then nature.
The oil is changed on Big Red and tires rotated. 🛻 So I should be good for summer trips now, with nothing needed until December, except whatever might break in the mean-time. But I’m not expecting a lot, and I feel like with $5 gasoline, there won’t be a lot of miles driven this summer.
This weekend is going to be rainy 🌧 so I plan to stay close to home, and next weekend but might be cold, but regardless I hope to get out of town so I can enjoy some time in the woods. So far it’s been kind of a bummer summer, just a lot of cold and rain, with very high gas prices.
One nice thing though, is this weekend I won’t have to work for a change. 👨💻 Just a nice quiet weekend, no work. At least I hope. But I think so. I could go down to the library on Saturday or maybe Five Rivers. I like to get my steps in.

Daily Update – June 9, 2022
Good morning! Happy Thursday.
By the time I dropped Big Red off at the shop for his oil change and tire rotation, the rain had stopped. Now I’m catching the bus to work.
Rain showers and 59 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌧️ There is a southeast breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 57 degrees.
So it’s the Big Day for Big Red. 🛻 Truth be told, I looked at the odometer last night and was shocked how few miles I had driven since last August, but I figured it still best to get the oil changed and tires rotated before summer driving season. In the grand scheme of things it’s not that expensive, and it’s better to do an oil change early rather then late. Although with inflation, maybe I’ll start doing my own oil changes again.
The plan is at lunch time to catch a bus and get my truck 🚌 then after work I will go grocery shopping. 🏪 I got some gas for my truck — $30 worth of it — and I think that will be enough for the weekend, even if I do decide to go to the gas up. But it probably won’t happen as it looks rainy, and I’ve done it a lot over the years. Doesn’t change that much year to year, and gas is so darn expensive these days.
Five Dollar Gas 💵
Like it or not, the world of five dollar a gallon gas is upon us. It’s been that expensive in some Midwest and Western states for a while now but it’s finally come to roost in New York State and about half of the rest of the state’s in America.
It often makes me feel like the world is closing in a bit on me, that everything is further drive away then it used to be. While it’s rare that I do much motoring around town, it makes me want to carefully pick and choose when I really want to head out of town or to the supermarket for a big shop, which buys less and less these days as I try to stretch it out more days.
In the grand scheme of things gas prices aren’t that big of a drain on my bank account. Yes, gas is a big portion of my road trips camping in the back country but food and beer are also big costs as are repairing broke equipment and my truck. But it’s not like I’m spending money on hotels or fancy attractions. The swimming hole in the woods is still free and my parents get me a state park pass each year.
Still it bothers me every time I put gas in my truck and see the big numbers on the pump, like a $115 for a full tank on my gasser truck. Or how even the very basic necessity products at Walmart come with bigger and bigger price tags. It’s not that I’m not making more money these days – but you would hope that extra money would be available to invest for a better tomorrow.
I’ve always thought that the reason for earning more money was to have more to save and get closer to future goals. Even COLA adjustments I’ve always tried to put mostly towards boosting further savings and investments. But with inflation and expensive gas, the old ways of always dumping more money into the markets might not be possible. It’s a bit frustrating.
