John Boyd Thacher State Park

John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

North Lake Reservoir Camping πŸ•

North Lake Reservoir Camping πŸ•

16 1/2 miles and 30 miles north of Forestport, the North Lake Reservoir serves as the headwaters to the Black River in a large reservoir maintained by the NYS Canal Authority for supplying a steady supply of water to Black River and Erie Canal via the former Black River Canal. Half of sites are on Black River Wild Forest, while most of the northernly sites are on a conservation easement. There is a sign-on booth for these campsites, permits are needed for stays over three nights. These are primitive campsites, though some of the sites along the eastern side, are accessible by a vehicle with a smaller camper on top. Boats with motors are allowed on this lake, so in summer months it may be not a quiet water. Most sites are on the water.

FBI surveillance of people associated with the civil rights movement has come up on the show many times. Today, we’re going to talk about the history of the FBI, especially as it related to communism and β€œsubversive threats,” and how that fed directly into COINTELPRO.

Episode: https://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/chtbl.com/track/5899E/traffic.megaphone.fm/HSW2172077739.mp3

In part two of this topic, the show looks at some of the specifics of the COINTELPROs that targeted black liberation organizations and the New Left, as well as how these programs were finally exposed to the public.

I had heard a lot about COINTELPRO but didn’t know the history or legal rational of the FBI’s actions. After listening to these two podcast I feel a bit more informed and have more mixed thoughts about the program.

Daily Update – July 20, 2022

Good morning! Day two of the heat wave 🌊

Mostly sunny and 70 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 68 degrees. The muggy weather ends Monday around 5 pm. πŸ˜“ Heat wave can’t last forever.

Out for my morning walk 🚢 before it gets too hot πŸ”₯ right at six o’clock but it’s only a matter of time. Maybe 96 degrees later.

Last night πŸŒƒ with the heat and humidity it was tough sleeping 😴 though I was pretty tired and got to bed πŸ› early after getting up early the previous day. Woke up at 4:30 when a pretty good thunderstorm β›ˆ with some rain came crashing through.

Last week I broke one of my apartment keys πŸ— and went to Walmart and made several copies. I forgot how much nicer a fresh new key works in a lock. I’ve lived in the same apartment for fifteen years now and keys get bent up in your pocket.

Friday is my dentist appointment 🦷 for my teeth cleaning πŸͺ₯ and my service appointment for Big Red to deal with wheel clicking and squeaking. πŸ›» I will drop Red off and catch the bus 🚍 to the dentist. Hopefully once Big Red is fixed it will be quieter, and it should be a nice week on vacation.

It’s really going to be nice to get out of town in a little over a week. 🏊‍♀️ This weekend with the heat would be nice but I don’t know if I will have my truck back yet, and with gas prices β›½ I should really wait as next week is summer vacation. It will be nice a week from Friday, when I’m on that road heading west, making a b-line for the Finger Lakes, especially once I reach camp, get the campsite I want and crack open that first beer. 🍺

Still like getting up before 6 am ⏰

Still like getting up before 6 am ⏰

While it is increasingly difficult to get to bed by 9 pm or even 8 pm in the darkest days of winter, the early mornings are nice especially when I’m able to be out walking by 6:15 when things are still pretty quiet out.

I started the early bedtime and rises when I did my West Virginia trip and wanted to maximize the daylight by rising early after the time change. But I liked getting that extra daylight in the winter and getting to bed early where I could snuggle under my electric blanket early in the evening during the cold of winter.
