John Boyd Thacher State Park

John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

Sun Angle and Temperature

On October 28th, the maximum sun angle is 34.1 degrees, but the average high is 55 degrees.

In contrast, on February 15th, the maximum sun angle is 34.8 degrees but the average high is 35 degrees.

So the sun is higher in the sky in mid-February then late October, but it’s cooler.

Why? Because the earth retains heat, it causes the average temperature to lag about 22 days behind the angle of sun.

Daily Update – October 11, 2022

Good morning! Happy Tuesday.

I got a spider plant from my parents yesterday, and I’m bringing it into the office. Kind of a dark and foggy morning though the moon was nice. Didn’t get out for my morning walk. I’ve just not feeling this week. Already the emails and dread is setting in. Maybe it’s just

Mostly cloudy and 39 degrees at the CDTA Route 18. ☁ Calm wind. The skies will clear around 11 am.

It was a nice holiday weekend, β›΅ spent camping up at Rensselaerville State Forest. I actually left on Friday morning for the Adirondacks but I swear there is still something wrong on my truck, as after a while on the road it gets all whallowy. Maybe it’s just the shock absorbers are bad — the ride has grown increasingly harsh — but I’m not getting any kind of rattle and my local shop took a good look at it. πŸ‘©‍πŸ”§ My mechanic didn’t seem concerned but I am. I am chewing over taking it to the shop that put the lift kit on but I don’t want to spend money on it unless it’s absolutely necessary.

I think it actually was good I decided to Rensselaerville. πŸ‚ The leaves were close to perfect. But more then that it was super quiet up there. A two people who read my blog just randomly stopped by. πŸ’¬ Always fun to meet up with people in the woods. 🌲 But most of the weekend was quiet and colorful. Hiked about 20 miles around the various back roads and truck trails throughout the forest.

JD1914 Relays

My old Plymouth Sundance had the low and high beams controlled by a JD1914 latching relay – you pulled the light stalk towards you to switch between high and low. Always thought it was a stupid design even if it was simple with one wire to the relay – throw back to the floor switch.

I much prefer the modern configuration where you push the stalk forward for high, towards you for low. I assume the turn signals and headlight bright control are a signal sensor that sends to the computer over CANBus which tells the computer to probably blip, well probably a JD1914 relay, because it’s cheaper than having two regular relays and you can keep old designs to this day and don’t have to constantly power the relay.
