John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
You can see the showers to the south but they haven’t reached this far north yet. They will be around though for the evening commute, I wore my rain coat and will be taking the local home most likely.

One step closer to 2023. And the future. Things are difficult with inflation and stock market down, but I know if I invest and minimize what I consume today, things will be better tomorrow.
Cloudy and 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. π«οΈ Calm wind. The skies will clear tomorrow around 9 am. Maybe a cool morning to have the windows open but I like the fresh air.
Saturday I went out Five Rivers in the morning, π¦ then over to Mr. Wolcott’s place in Colonie, poked around the Crossings with John for a while then went for a hike at Five Mile Waterworks π¦ and the Pine Bush Trail π² along there for a while until dusk.
Sunday I was going to go to Thacher Park π but unsure how long the sun would be out, I decided instead just to do another hike out to Five Rivers via Meads Lane. I spent several hours poking around Van Dyke Preserve and Five Rivers. And it just was one of those days that started out gray and foggy, and I couldn’t get moving. I do think I missed out on some pretty leaves, but I just didn’t want to drive or deal with crowds, especially when I could walk to Five Rivers and it would save money. π£ I guess I can’t complain too much, though after seeing other people’s photos from Thacher Park π· I really wish I had driven up there and just walked out to Five Rivers. I do feel like I am missing out on fall. Plus I still have questions about the reliability my of truck.
Maybe next weekend I’ll head up to Thacher Park. π Or maybe I’ll head out of town to camp. I am not sure, I am considering my options based on the weather, how busy I am with work and how well my truck is running. I am thinking maybe Madison County, but I might wait until November for that trip. Rensselearville State Forest is close but I’ve been up there a lot lately. Maybe there are other options — the thing is I will need cell service all weekend long as it’s another working weekend.
Some people say I’m dirty hick. I guess in someways I am, I enjoy spending time in the wilderness, which means getting muddy. Mud and muck doesn’t scare me, is the stuff that mother earth is made out of, it’s the stuff that grows the plants and animals that I enjoy eating.
Sure, mud and certainly moisture can lead to blisters and can be uncomfortable when it crusts on your skin. But mud washes off. Dirt never hurt nobody. Muck can smell earthy, but it’s a very natural material especially on the farm but also in the wilderness. It’s not filled with toxic germs like some would say. Exposure to mud and muck is actually quite healthy.
Some people say, why don’t you just wash off the dust, the mud and the muck. I do, but it just accumulates over time, much too quickly. But I’m really not that concerned, it’s just nature.

Good afternoon! Happy middle of October Weekend. π
Bridge day down in West Virginia where they have that big party on the expressway bridge over the New River Gorge. Locally though the colors are good but already fading especially in the hills.

You know my reaction is basically where has the year gone. π In many ways I want these turbulent years to come and go in my life, my investments and savings to grow so I can have my own land. I want the recession and inflation to be over, but at the same time things are going by too fast. β³ And I feel like I go less and less every day.
Out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center π²for a while just to observe nature πΏοΈ and get my steps π£ in for the day. I didn’t get an early start earlier as the morning was dark with a lot of fog. π« Colors are already fading, they were so nice when I was at Rennselearville State Forest that very cold and windy Columbus Day Weekend π last week.
After I get home and have lunch π going to shower πΏ and head over to John Wolcott apartment in Colonie. I haven’t seen him since June and while he speaks few words at this point its good to visit while I still can. It’s a pretty good trip up there but I’ll combine it with an evening π walk in the Pine Bush.
I don’t have big plans for the weekend, though I hope to get out and enjoy it doing some hiking in the Pine Bush on Saturday and somewhere else on Sunday. Maybe next week I will head out of town — depends how well Big Red is running and how busy I am. I am thinking Central NY but who knows. It might be rainy and the best chance to get out might be November. Just busy, busy, busy.

I didn’t think the flu and COVID-vaccine was bad. π Maybe it’s because I’m getting so used to have shots and things injected into my body, but also the needles they use these days are so fine it’s barely a prick. I don’t feel a thing this time — my arms aren’t sore, I don’t feel sick or anything. Really much better with the latest booster compared to before. Maybe it’s because I’m just used to it but I didn’t have any side-effects.
The rain was so heavy π§ when I ran into the store and the pharmacy, and I got completely soaked. Hopefully I won’t get the flu from getting so wet. As soon as I got home I changed into dry clothes and went to bed. Well, after having some dinner from what I cooked up at home. π My pantry was kind of bare, because I avoided a trip to the store to double up with the flu shot. I would have preferred to walk down to the pharmacy, but not in the pouring rain.
I guess we are catching up on the rain, β and it’s nice that it’s not lasting into the weekend. If I wasn’t so darn busy I’d probably think it’s a nice weekend to head out of town. But it’s good I’m going to head up to Colonie and visit Mr. Wolcott and do some hiking in the Pine Bush. π³ Based on the amount of color from my office window, it looks like it’s getting quite pretty outside downtown now.
